Speed is everything!
Hi!
Now I've finished and uploaded a run of Penumbra!
I've played it on medium skill. It is segmented, currently I don't know how many segments that are.
And I've cutted out the loading scenes.
My time is 27:00min.
Here you can download the run.
Sorry that the video is so dark but that is so in the game.

Now a few comments:
At the beginning I've to collect three things: The notice-book, a lamp (which is in the padlock) and another lamp.
Then I could go out. Ouside I've to take a stone and throw it on the ice. Then I could get into the pipe.

Now I've to pick up the steel rod and the hammer and destroy the wood behind the shelf.
After the Tunnel I've to use the steel rod to get into the door.

Next I've to run to a door, pick up a zippo lighter and take the stones out of the crate to pull it away. Get in and evade the steam. Pick up the lighter gass and fill it in the zippo. get back and get the key.
Run to the office and get that bottle of baxtrin, the key and open the box with it. Get back and open the door with the other key. Turn right into the storage room with the code. Pick up a string from the box and get the axe.
Use a box to get over the electric fence and turn off the generator.
Smash the door with the axe and even smash the barrel.
the string and the bottle of baxtrin in the inventory. Use the soaked string on the gun powder from the barrel.
Run back and get the TNT barrel, put the barrel to the stones and use the string (now it's a fuse) on the barrel, then use the lighter on the fuse and stay back! Get in the hole.

Go forward and turn right. Walk through the door. In the room stack. Get on a box and pick up a white fuse from the top shelf. Get out of the room and go right. There are doors leading to the communication room. Pick up the radio from one table. Go back to the power room.
In the power you have to destroy the wooden planks, push the box down and pick up that battery.
Go up the ladder and put the battery into the machine.
Go to the generator and pull the lever. It doesn't work. Put in the fuse and turn the valves into the right order.
Get back to the generator and pull the lever again. Get out of the power room and go to the fence and use the keypad. Go through the gate and get into the door.

Run to the excavation and take the bigger part of the broken ladder, then jump and attach it to the hooks under the tunnel. Now jump and grab the ladder. Use a box to your advantage and walk into the tunnel.

Run through the tunnel into the storage room.
Pick up the key and smash the door (the door is closed and normally you don't get through it, but you can smash it, it think that's a bug)
Use the pallet to get over the steam, pick up the gasoline canister. Get out of the storage room.
Run into the tool shed and get a saw to cut the wooden plank. (It's useful to stand on a box to get not hit by the dogs.

Get into the auxilary shaft and use the hammer to open the gasoline canister. Use the gasoline canister at the digging machine. Grab each ends of the power cable and stick it to both sockets. Now insert the key into the table near the joystick. Now let the digging machine dig through the wall. Get into the door.

Run to a door and wait until a huge worm get through it.
Normally you've got to run back to be saved from the worm, but I've just waited beside the door, that saves time. Run through that tunnel into a room and pull the lever. Run bag to the room where the worm is and run through the door.

Now run to shaft 13 and turn right on the bridge. Run through that tunnel and pick up a clear paper and get back. Run to the tool storage and pick up a screwdriver and the wire cutter. Now run into the refinery. Push the buttons and crawl under under the crushers. Use the barrel to get up and get through the ventiation shaft and put in the motor.
Use the right moment to jump through the stream and go into the shaft.
Use the wire cutter and let the cart drive through the wall. Pick up the newspaper, lay it under the door and use the screwdriver to push the key out of the door.
Get into the room and push the key.
Now run back and get into section c.

Now run to lake utuqao. Run through the tunnel and over the frozen lake. Use the saw to get the crowbar and get back.
Go to the chemical storage. There is a worm again. Run away and smash the wooden planks. Get into the chemical storage and pick up all six glasses. Now get out of the room and use the crowbar on a door.

Turn left and run on the wooden planks to a room in that I mix the chemical with it I explode the way later.

Turn right to the incinerator and press the key. Get the key and run back and open a door. Use the screwdriver and the wire cutter at the power box behind the wardrobe. Now run back and get into the final level.

Run down the stairs and run through that long room.
Here the game ends.

I hope you'll enjoy it!:)
give me your eyes!!!
That was brilliant. I downloaded the demo just before I watched, and only managed as far as the trap door opened with the metal rod in the hole before I remembered that I'm a frightened little girl around anything that hints at a possibility of scariness, and promptly quit.
But you made just as good use of the physics as the game did and did lots of things that were clearly meant to be done quite slowly very quickly; it was a really good watch especially having had a slight idea of how it feels to play.

Thanks for making! I recommend that people play the demo or the game if possible, just for the new experience!
Plus play it on the hardest level. It doesn't really increase difficulty except for level with the small spiders. Because once you lose the feeling of not being able to defend yourself the game loses a lot of its appeal Smiley

The speedrun was pretty nice, haven't seen any mistakes plus some nice shortcut findings Smiley
Are you going to submit it to SDA?
Speed is everything!
Thx to CannibalK9! Smiley

Thanks, yes I think I'll go to submit it.
Yeah, good job Smiley

Some nice tricks in there like for example getting over the deadly steam with the wooden board. The game is very dark yes, but if you watch it in a darkened room, it makes for a great watch Wink

I also saw you edited the settings.cfg for the SimpleWeaponSwing. I'm not sure but you probably enabled AutoQuickSave too Smiley

Hm, normally I haven't edited the settings.cfg.
I've only changed some settings in the options menu...

Hmm ok, maybe you just have a good weapon swinging. I mostly somehow had a bit of problems (=doing it not very smoothly) while doing it manually (Without editing the file) Smiley

Also, I think I noticed a little audio desync in the video. I presume this gets fixed in the final video version?

One last thing, jumping gives you a little boost and you've mainly used it to get to the level transition doors. It can be done quite consistently even though there are small pauses when you land on the ground again (Jump, land on the ground, wait a short moment then jump again). I'm not really sure if it would indeed be faster though.

EDIT: I've checked the simple weapon swinging thing a little better and no indeed you're not using it. The reason I know this for sure is because in your video you used the "pull mouse backward - push mouse forward" attack immediately followed by a "left-right\right-left attack" which isn't possible with the SimpleWeaponSwing enabled so good job Smiley
sda loyalist
Yeah, there is an audio desync.

I've never seen this game before, and watching the run really creeped me out! It looks very well executed though, and still fun even if you haven't played it. Good job!

I didn't noticed a audio desync in the video.
That is the problem you mean, or?
Of course I can reencode it, maybe then it's better.

And I think collecting only 2 chemicals (D and F) is enough in the level with the chemical room.
I haven't tested it but I'll do it this evening or so.
Maybe I can rerun only that part of the run. Is that allowed?

I was about to mention that but now you already mentioned it yourself Smiley

The save positions (Either Save Spots or Autosaves) are always at the same locations so that's no problem. Just keep in mind that the continuity of items must be the same. So if you rerun that part and grab 2 chemicals, then in the other next segments there must be 2 chemicals in your inventory instead of 6, so basically I think that you need to rerun all the segments after the "grabbing chemicals" segment.

Yes that's no problem, because after that there isn't many to do. So I think I'll rerun from that part to the end.

I've done now the new run, the new time is 26:29min.
I think to submit I'll take the new run. But I don't upload it yet, I'll upload it at the weekend...

Good job on improving the run!

I've found something in the beginning of the game but sadly it's useless. I've made a demonstration video which shows the trick (And you can see it's pretty tricky to perform) and it also shows why it's useless at the end of the video (I've cranked up the gamma a bit to 2.0 so it's better viewable).

I've noticed that you can sortof climb up a little bit while crouching and then mashing the jump button.

I was also able to get out of bounds in the room at the end where Red needs to get burned in the Incinerator. I could get through a pipe and somehow I went out of bounds (Atleast I think it was, the screen suddenly became completely black and I could equip the Torch\Flashlight and everything else but I couldn't move\get out of the darkness :)).

Sounds interesting! Downloading now... (My connection is very slow so it could take a bit time)
I'll write more if I've seen the video Wink

Hmm, I found 2 other things and 1 confirmation thing Smiley

Did you know it's possible to jump off an item in the air? (YES! Here we go again. Whenever you got an FPS game you can always do "something" with objects ;D). This is useful when you need to get out of the basement after getting that Lighter fuel. In your run you're using 2 of those little boxes, but 1 rock is enough to get out of there (1 little box probably too). I haven't checked other places yet, maybe you can even get all the way up in the refinery to destroy the fan. Maybe "flying" with objects is even possible, the same as in Oblivion.

The other thing I found is in the beginning of the game when you drop down the hatch from the outside. There's a blocked door and you need to go around and through the tunnel to get behind that door. There's a barrel blocking the door and it's possible to grab the barrel through the small opening next to the door, then drag the barrel to the left and you can open the door. If executed properly, saves a few seconds.

The confirmation thing is about run-jumping. It's indeed faster then just running alone. I've checked this in the place which you can see in the demonstration video I uploaded. There's some text appearing in the middle of the screen after some time. So I played the same path as you did and the text appeared later on my screen (About 2 seconds or so) which indicates that it's faster.

EDIT: Hehe, awesome. Even enemy boosts are possible. I was getting past the first dog you encounter, and I jumped at the moment that he attacked me from behind and I got quite a massive boost Smiley

That all sounds nice!
Espacially the trick where you can "fly".
You can use that trick on many places like the places you said and the electric fence, the excavation shaft, the storage room, lake utuqao and many other places. Cheesy

With the locked door in the beginning, that's nice, too.

I've already thought of this but it thougth if you jump and get back to the ground you slow down a bit.

Maybe that are enough things to rerun it again Cheesy
But I think we'll find much other tricks Grin Grin

And if you jump before one of the texts will be showed, you'll jump very high, too.

Alright Smiley

I've found another time saving thing. It's in the part where you need to use the saw for the first time to saw down a piece of wood which is blocking the door. You can position one of those bigger crates next to the gate on either the right or left side (Not in the middle since that part of the gate is higher), then use the crouchclimb to get through it. This skips the sawing cutscene.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to tell about another timesaver. In the power room where you need to destroy those barrier things and then drop down a crate so that you can pickup the battery, you only need to destroy the barrier that blocks the crate, there's no need to destroy the barriers in front of the ladder Smiley

Yeah I know, ladders can be a bit buggy. There's quite a high chance of falling down again Smiley

I've found 2 things and I think that sadly 1 thing can't be used but it would save a lot of time.

In the Incinerator room you can jump in the room towards the button, and when you hit the ground you can quickly jump again and if performed correctly you can end up exactly next to the button (I wasn't able to press the button right away though...).

Remember that I told before about the AllowQuickSave feature which you can enable by editting the settings.cfg file? When you walk in the Incinerator room and activate the long talking cutscene, you can press F4 to quick save and then F5 to load that quick save. This skips Red from talking and you can immediately move again and activate the button to burn him. The camera still has the moving motion from the cutscene but the cutscene isn't playing anymore Smiley Would save a lot of time but I'm not sure if it's allowed.

Yes I think so, too. Maybe we can ask mikwuyma.
And if it's allowed you can use that trick on many other places I think, but that would save only not so many time...

Yep, needs to be asked Smiley

Quote:

It probably works with every cutscene yes, no matter how short it still saves time Smiley

EDIT: I've asked it on IRC and the answer was "no", cannot be used Smiley

EDIT: Oh BTW, "flying" on objects is somewhat possible but very difficult to do. I could jump from a rock 2 times in the air (Jump, grab rock, jump, grab rock, jump), but like I said it's very tricky and not really useful I think.

There's another way to do the part in the Refinery a little faster. You can throw the red motor block (From the ground) on top next to the fan, and then mash the jump button to get up on the machinery thing (In your run you were stacking objects on each other to get up there). When you just normally stand up you can also climb a bit higher when mashing the jump button, just like the crouch climbing.
