What do you think we should do about locking/removing topics, banning spammers/trolls, etc?

I don't want people to vote without reading this, so the options are below. Current policies are much more lax than any site I have ever seen where the moderators are still around. Only one person is banned, and this was an extreme case as the guy is an admitted site hijacker. Nobody has ever been banned for spamming, trolling, being a dumb kid, or anything else. Individual posts are never deleted unless they are spambot posts. Even manual spam isn't deleted, but maybe edited. Even when someone spams a bunch of new threads that are deleted, we always leave one and lock it to show them their mistake. Duplicate topics aren't locked but merged. Merging has a huge priority over locking/editing, which has a huge priority over deleting.

Judging by the "report to mod" feature, lots of people do wish there was more moderation. Unless it's a spambot, we never respond to mod requests, and there is a huge inherent inclination against reporting anyway (it's not worth the effort, mods will think I am pushy, someone else will report anyway, etc), so the real wishes for moderation are definitely way higher. So this feature has been useful in indicating what it seems like people want.

I've heard some complaints in the past that the mods don't do enough, and none that we do too much, for what that's worth. I am personally guilty of not really caring about the forum, since I think the part of SDA that really matters is the front page, i.e. the speedruns. But I realize that a lot of people don't even run, and are here for the community, i.e. the forum and IRC. I apologize for this.

Poll options:

1) I want a community like Something Awful that keeps out the riffraff. You can delete posts for l33t or repeating Chuck Norris memes. Banning annoying spamming kids is good too. We don't need to be loved by everyone. Civilized members shouldn't have to deal with this nonsense. I trust you guys will handle this well.

2) Current policies are good, so I wouldn't be upset if they stayed the same, but I guess a little more could be done. I know you guys are proud of the fact only one person is banned, but there's no reason to try to keep that low. Feel free to delete every spam post. Don't be afraid to get rid of proven spammers or trolls. I trust you guys on this.

3) Please don't change anything! I think the strange mojo you guys have going is perfect.

4) Don't mod anything as long as a human posted it. Free speech forever!

This isn't quite true, Shin Akuma was banned for spamming constantly even though I gave him a chance to stop. Also, there was that guy who was banned from TG a while ago who decided SDA was the best place to voice his complaints (lol).

Also, you know what I voted for. Tongue
Exoray
Actually I find this forum in pretty good shape compared to most other forums I know. There is no need for strict moderation here as the kind of people who post here usually think before creating new topics. And in the cases when someone do post something really unneccessary, you people are pretty fast with locking it anyways.

I voted 3 as I find things to be perfectly well as they are and you people are already doing quite alot of work. Besides, burden you with more work and we risk the quality declining on the other parts Wink
Visually Appealing
though i haven't seen much in the way of spamming and trolling here, i picked #2.
picked #4, though #2 started to entice me with it's nice words and made me feel safe and loved

5) mod me
I'm definitely going to vote for #3 (keep things the same). #1 just makes an alarm go off in my head saying "FESS! FESS!"* That would be a nightmare.

* For those who don't know, FESS had power hungry moderators and simple posting seemed like a "can I get away with stating my opinion" thing.

One. I still read a lot of posts here that don't add anything. IMO those posts should be deleted. (This only goes for the 4 "Planning" forums, I don't mind the other posts.)

#2.  Current policies work quite nicely around here.  And if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Well if you're talking about 'keep it up!' type of posts, you're right that they don't add anything, but I'll be damned if posts like these should become discouraged Smiley

Otherwise the compoundingly confusing zelda topics come to mind... but that's really the fault of the users not using a wiki.  There is still one isn't there?

edit: also can I just downvote #1 cuz SA is a hellhole
TIOLET!
Heh, on the forum where I have been mod (and still am) for over 4 years now we sometimes ban people for 5-6 months if they just type something like "n1" and nothing else in a post. Not to mention that we send abuse reports to ISPs if someone decides to spam or post very bad stuff, which often results in the user having their internet connection shut down completely. Now that's the kind of methods I want to see Grin

I suggested using part of the knowledge base as a run strategy wiki. I remember Nate and Enhasa mostly shrugging at the idea. I don't think it would be used for most games, but for games with a big community here like Super Mario Galaxy and 3D Zelda games, I think it would work well.

I actually think you guys are too quick to lock threads. So what if it's something trivial, that's what a general forum is for.
There's a word for that
Voted 2.
I tend to judge moderation with a leery eye, as I've been on several forums now that were once great and have gone to complete and utter trash because the admins and mods either didn't know what they were doing or didn't care what they were doing. The user base here is for the most part very good, but when push comes to shove a mod/admin should never be afraid to do their job. Mistakes can be rectified, and apologies made if necessary, but when something is ignored it sets a precedent for what everyone else is allowed to and eventually even 'meant' to do. Far more than anything else, the key to running things smoothly is clear communication, and I don't think that should be a problem here Smiley
I also have never really encountered any great amount of spamming etc., but if you've been getting lots of reports as you say, then do what you feel is necessary. If there are already a few examples of bad threads sitting around then more aren't really needed. Personally I don't feel like that much needs changing at this moment, but upping the standards a li'l bit never hurt anyone.

the only thing that bothers me about this is that more formal writing is considered higher standard.  the only thing i can say is that nate is probably one of the most genius people around here and can still write things like "lol wut."  its more than just cause he's admin...i doubt it frustrates anyone.  if "lol wut" is a response to some confusing as hell post...i see no problem seeing a response like that from anyone.

This is a presupposition you have that may not be shared by the staff.
I vote for two, personally. Just seems like the best choice.

Hi there.
I voted for 2 as well.

Personally, I don't think there is a need to change anything right now. Adbots are becoming a thing of the past and are taken care of quickly. I've never seen blatant spamming, flame wars are more or less nonexistent from what I can see despite the frequent debates and trolls are few and spotted easily. There's always room for more divine justice, though, and I wouldn't mind harsher actions if they're justified.

However, it is also inevitable that as the site grows in popularity, more and more moderation will be needed. It might be a good idea to bring in people that care about the forums and that like to moderate to handle such a task and, in due time, a trusted few native speakers for the most active languages spoken should the section becomes more active. It'd be a shame to let the forums go wild. After all, while SDA is about the speedruns, a lot of runs couldn't of been possible without people discussing strategies, glitches and talking to each other on the forums.

I suppose some sort of forum guidelines could help people know what to report and when to report, as well as how to behave in general. Granted, most of it is common sense, but it can't hurt. There's not really any written forum rules beside posting game related material in the general section and posting in the right section.

EDIT: What the blazes there's a guideline post in general omgwtfbbq.

I chose #2.

I've been lurking as much as being an active poster in a lot of forums. Topics have varied between men's clothing of the highest price ranges, automotive technology (engineering to DIY), cooking, politics, games and law.
I've seen a lot of different userbases and how they tend to fuck things over. There's anything between dumb spanning and flame wars, to several pages long argumentations and agitations.

SDA is actually the place I'd like to see changed the least. Of course it's not free of spam and insults, but if such things happen their either taken care of quickly or end soon. Still, being a little bit more present for the mods can't hurt and being a little more strict in some cases could make things better. I'd yell at people for posting something like '"in before closed" for example. I couldn't really decide between 2 and 3 and picked 2 in the end.

I dont see whats the issue, you havent explained how report to moderator usage contributes or leads you to believe what you do, the only time I pressed report to moderator it seemed to work, which means A+++ I'd press it again, more people using that option doesnt mean they want more strict moderation just that the option is considered when they want to bring a post to mods attention, which would actually be good, I would have never thought that button was pressed at all.

A mod doesn't (shouldn't) have to read every new post all the time, he can do a quick scan for spam/bot topics since those might not be reported, then check the wall with user reports and call it a day. If you needed new moderators because the current ones dont have time that's different.

Don't get me wrong, feedback posts are great, off-topic posts aren't.
