Brawl is terrible competitively anyhow. SSB is overrated. I'll throw down in some Street Fighter or Guilty Gear anyday, even though I'm awful at fighting games.
Also, on the off–chance that anyone lives Maryland/southern PA and needs a ride, I could certainly help out there. Could also help with train pickup/dropoff if need be.
Hm, I live on the southern tail of PA, just off route 52. May be feasible yet.

Hey carc, I read eariler you'd probably fly. What about if i drove, would you pitch in for gas? Since we are both in FL?
besides, I have GGXX:AC for wii we could duke it out for practice lol..
About people not knowing if they can afford to make it or dunno if they'll have time, that's why we're planning this such in advance, so you can get ready. You don't have to drive, you could take the greyhound or amtrak or (gasp) even fly. Also, school won't be a problem, we're not going to schedule this when anyone would be in school.
Since I want to make it there alive, I won't be using Amtrak. Flying is a little too weird and cramped for me. Greyhound sounds great (for me anyway).
I still think it would be awesome if we all met at Mike's house.
Where would it be at anyway? As long as it's in the US I'd probably be able to go. I don't know if anyone is in the Iowa area at all, but depending on the location I'd either fly or take a bus or something. Also, if the only thing that happened were drinking contests, I'd be really ticked off.
Hey Nate, I don't know how you're traveling or anything; but if I pitched in for gas and stuff (this is me assuming you're driving there), is there a possibility of me riding with you? I don't know the highway route too well, but I know I'm, like, 5 hours away from you (New Iberia, LA; which is 3 hours west of New Orleans, LA). It would make the drive way more enjoyable and less boring..
dunno where you think i live but it takes over eight hours just to get to houston let alone louisiana. but yeah i mean you at least are vaguely on the way to the location so yeah consider shotgun called. anyone else asking to ride with me will have to be not too far out of the way of lubbock -> louisiana -> dc.

FUCK YEAH!! You won't regret it! I guarantee an awesome trip there and back!
Also, I forgot exactly where you live in Texas. I was always assuming [Nate's town] was in Eastern Texas.
indeed. so that makes two riding with me. i can only take one other person without it getting crazy cramped in the car so speak now or forever hold your peace.
Lets say the chance for me to show up would be 50 %. If evryone who say they will show up really shows up I would definitely want to be one of the participants.
When is the "winter-brake" ? after Christmas?
I will go to U.S three weeks from now. An expensive trip. And also have a snowboard trip planned to winter. So the timing is kind of bad. For us who have a long way to go and for events like this, planning is very important. If the event where planned 1 year ahead I could have said the chance for showing up is 95 %.
Winter break usually starts somewhere in early– to mid–December and goes till after Christmas, so I'm expecting this to take place sometime fairly near Christmas, either before or after.

Probably going to be early January since post-Christmas is better for most people than pre-Christmas. MAGFest is Jan 1-4 FWIW. Don't ask me why, but apparently they pushed it up this year.
Quote from Megatherium:
haven't read the whole thread, has a location been decided? i'm in western MA. if it's by chance not taking place there, is anyone car pooling?
Probably not going to be in MA, probably going to be closer to the middle of the east coast. I know andrewg lives in MA, so maybe you should ask him first of all.
Heck, I could probably come, depending on where exactly this thing is. I may not have done any speedruns, but I'd love to meet some people. How far away is this place from about Richmond, VA?
Ok, it definitely seems like we have enough interest to do this, so the next step is to figure out the details. Weigh in on your preferences for time and location. East coast USA and winter break are non-negotiable at this point.
Would you rather meet at an event such as MAGFest (Jan 1-4 in Alexandria, Virginia), or have an informal meeting without those pesky non-SDA people? And please, suggest another event so we can have some variety of choices if possible. The positives of meeting at an event are more things to do and maybe some publicity for SDA. The negatives are an additional entry fee (MAGFest would be $25 for the whole event it seems, not bad), possibly having to stay at a hotel if nobody lives nearby, and it might split up the SDA attendees and make it less personal.
Once we figure out when and where we're doing this, we can then figure out how we're going to house all these people, i.e. who is staying where.
Edit: Arkarian brought up a good point, so please also contribute some suggestions as to how long you would want our meeting to last. I always just assumed 3-4 days or so. We are not limited to just gaming activities. I would want to go see a movie or play some basketball or dine out or things like that.
I'd prefer the more personal meeting at someone's house, but an event like MAGFest would be just as good, if that's easier for everyone. $25 is not a problem for me. Since I live in Maryland, I'm pretty flexible as far as mid–Atlantic location, but of course something in MD/VA/DC would be best for me. I can get to pretty much anywhere in VA in < 5 hours, but if we have it somewhere else, I certainly don't mind driving longer.
Any time during break is good for me— my job is extremely flexible. How long is the meetup going to be? If it's at MAGFest, are we planning to stay the whole time, sleeping in hotels/people's houses?
we definitely need to plan sda-only events. if people want to go to magfest they can do that on their own. of course we can plan a joint appearance there too but i can't see it being anywhere near as cool as sda-only stuff. i mean i can't imagine the magfest folks would be too helpful in publicizing us especially after we were featured at pax last year (apparently magfest hates pax).
