Quick update on my progress:

I'm getting gold splits left and right, and have gotten the sum of my best splits down to 16:09. I've made some improvements to the route, saving those frames, and making scary/risky situations less scary/risky.
All over better play, and I'm dead set on getting sub 17, hopefully in the low 16:50s.

I discovered that the top walls on the last screen of chapter 2, are possible to jump over, saving somewhere around 2-3 seconds. I'll make a short video to show this, if anyone wants to see it, but if no one asks, the next video from me will be the new WR.

Sub 17 is here! I got a 16:57 just now, sadly it was really bad, and I'm can beat it by atleast 10 seconds.

With the level of play I'm at, I think I can get this game down to around 16:40, just need the controller to co-operate + some good RNG.

Here's the run:

A lot of small mistakes, but I got a gold split on chapter 6 and 7, saving me the time I need to get sub 17. You can also see some of the optimalizations I've done to the route.
I got another 16:57 today, but lost 12 seconds to a stupid death on the last screen of chapter 6. I even got a gold split on chapter 7, eventhough I haven't practised it at all for weeks, and it was pretty sloppy, suggesting my time can go down a bit more.
Is there any way to emulate this game legitimately? It looks really good.

Not that I know of, I haven't really looked into the SMS emulators. I think the Fusion emulator is the best, but I don't know how it handles lag etc. And yes, the game is really good Smiley
16:53.80

Really bad up to chapter 5, really good after.

I WILL beat this time by atleast 20 seconds in hopefully not to long.

I got a 16:45 today. It's highlighted on my twitch account. I won't upload it to youtube, because I'm 100% that I'll get a waaaaaay better run soon.
Scratch that 16:45, got a 16:42 today.

Lost a lot of time in a really bad fight with the samurai of chapter 3. But otherwise it was pretty good. Nailed the hardest parts of chapter 6 and 7.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, this also happened yesterday. Any glitch hunters out there want to figure this out?

I found out that using a ninpo directly after wall jumping, eats your forward momentum, allowing you to wall jump again and basicly climb any wall. It's pretty hard to do, and I've only played around with it on the emulator, but I'm not expecting it to be easier with a controller.

As of yet I've only found one place where it's usable, and it's the first part of the last screen of chapter 7. It would save some seconds to get over the wall instead of going under it, obviously, but it's only if you get it first try, and it's really only viable to try if you get a bad spike rotation.

This will be pretty useful for a TAS run though, and I've spotted some places it would/could be a timesaver. Getting the TAS run sub 15 shouldn't be much of problem now.

Late response.. and very hard to see what happened on a twitch vod, but it looks like you 'landed' and killed the enemy at roughly the same frame? maybe the game forgets to check if there's floor somehow on that frame? I'm pretty sure it would've happened way more if it was that simple though.
Yeah, looking at it now, it looks like I land on the very edge of the crate, and slash at the same time.

Edges in this game are very slippery, meaning that if you hit the very edge of a platform, you appear inside the platform for a frame or two, before you "slip" out of it, but if you jump during this, you'll jump as if you're standing on the platform. This is something you can see alot in the TAS.

I'll do more testing, and see if I can get a consistent way of reproducing this glitch.
Eventhough I've tried for hours before without being able to reproduce the glitch, I manage to get it twice in a short amount of time today. It looks like you get "pulled" a pixel or two forward if you slash at the very end of the crate aswell as killing the enemy (not sure if killing is necessary though), letting you fall through the floor.

I'm thinking this is possible because there's no pitfalls in this part of chapter 2. I managed to get to the next part of the level, and the game was back to normal. You also can not pick up scrolls while under the effect of this glitch, even though you can slash scrolls and enemies, walljump, aswell as collide with platforms.

Because you can't pick up scrolls, it's not usable at all in chapter 2, as it messes with the route, making you miss out on 100 ninpo. It wouldn't really save any time over the current route anyways, it would only lower the risk of losing time severely.

If it's possible to produce this glitch in other chapters, it might be a good timesaver. However, if my theory about it working because there's no pitfalls, then I can't really think of any places it would be doable.

Ninja Gaiden SMS got a whole lot more techical with the wall jump cancel climb.

The first and biggest one (I think), is at the elevator shaft in chapter 2. If you cancel climb up the outside of the elevator shaft, you'll save a couple of seconds (might be as much as three seconds, , assuming that you get it the first try, even more if you get good RNG and get damage boosted by one of the paparazzi guys below you.

In chapter 3 you can save a frame or two by cancel climbing up the wall at the end of "3-1".

In chapter 4 you can save half a second or so by cancel climbing up and over the last wall on the first screen. You can also use it to get over some other walls, but I don't know how realistic it is yet. The last wall before the waterfall is a good one, if you can get to the top most platform on the first waterfall screen, you'll save a good second or two, but it's proving to be really hard to get the timing correct.

In "6-3", you can get over the first wall, and save some frames, but I'm thinking it's more realistic to use in a TAS.

As I've previously mentioned, on the first part of the last screen of chapter 7, you can get over the wall, saving atleast one second.

So basicly, if I get the timing down on cancel climbing, the WR will go waaay down, sub 16 might even be realistic with a perfect run.
If I ever get around to making a TAS, it will be a lot shorter than the previous, sub 15 for sure.
Looking forward to ESA!! Wink
I was lurking around on the TASvideos forum, and found this: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTcxMTU3MTgw.html
It's a TAS from around 2012 that finishes in 14:40, 20 seconds faster than adelikats TAS.

I still think that the TAS time can go down some seconds, but not as much as previously thought.

During todays ESA practice, I decided to skip Shaftless on chapter 2, and wouldn't you know it, I got a new PB/WR.

16:35

I got a gold at chapter 4, because I got the new trick, Jack Off Jaguar, first try (It's the skip right leading into the waterfall). So I was -14 at the end of chapter 4, but only finished at -6,8 due to run-stress (lost 3 seconds to the last fight alone).

Whenever I get runs going with first try Shaftless, this time will fall, but I uploaded this one just to show off a couple of the improvements.
ESA HyPe!!! (Sorry I can't contain myself)
Eventful day in offstream practice. I got a close to perfect 1:18.7 chapter 1. It can probably go down by another 0.4-0.7 seconds with an even better boss fight. Hopefully I'll have a 1:18 recorded and uploaded soon enough.

I also got a 5 second gold split on chapter 7. It had pretty good execution, but it can still go down by a couple of seconds, due to some mistakes, and some frame perfect stuff I didn't pull off.

Sum of best is down to 16:02. I smell a sub 16 RTA sometime in the future.
I finally got the double triple on the chapter 6 boss, saving a cycle on him. The timing is reeeally tight, and if you don't get it you lose time due to the lag you cause with the extra sprites on screen.
