So if you get on the Normandy like that at any point except during citadel 1 or the detention, and leave through the door, the game just gives you all of the party members. You can use this after Virmire to get back your dead party member. Not really useful for a speed run, but I thought it was neat.
Seems solid to me. That said, my only experience speedrunning this game is on 360 before this game became a broken mess, so I may not be the best person to ask. Seriously though, way to destroy this game. I can't help but laugh whenever you go OOB.
The benezia clip saves a couple seconds, but it's really easy to mess up and end up on top of the room, or in the kill box below the room. A consistent setup for this would be nice.
Then, I found a new clip that makes that time terrible.
Now, it may look like I'm doing a corner clip without a corner, but actually, there is one there.
It's a corner formed by the invisible wall that seals off the sloped part of the wall. So, the only reason I can go out of bounds here is because of a wall designed to prevent you from going out of bounds.
The thing to do seems to be not to draw the weapon after the first save and load. This will keep you from getting down to the grass and it also puts you in a slow motion mode.
So, I started a new non-speed playthrough as the Vanguard and I noticed that it has almost the same talents as the Adept. It gives up Singularity, but in exchange it gets Adrenaline Burst (Assault Training), which resets the cooldowns on Throw, Warp, Barrier, Lift, Marksman, Shield Boost, and EDIT: whatever ability your bonus talent gives you. In a speedrun, that seems like a very good trade for the long boss fights, particularly the Thorian and the final boss. The only other downsides I see are that it takes Warp 4 to unlock Barrier and Assault Training 5 to unlock Tactical Armor (Shield Boost), but on the upside it also starts with Pistols unlocked.
Of course, you could argue that the classes should be separate categories, but given how much their talents overlap, I don't think there's much interest in having a run for each.
Does the keybind quick load behave differently in any way than normal quick load? If not, I don't see any way verifiers could tell, nor would it matter.
Editing .ini files is kind of a grey area. Often it's allowed for the purposes of changing settings that clearly should be adjustable but can't be changed in-game (e.g. graphics), but not for other things. I wouldn't use it in this case. It would be noticeable in an SS (with resets) run because going to the menu and loading would normally appear in the video. But it would be subtracted for timing purposes, so there's no advantage to having the binding.
I meant to put some thought into Vanguard myself, and besides a riskier Eden Prime (IE the train) it seems like a good idea. You level up twice before the train anyway, so you could have Barrier by then if you put every point into it. Manually leveling at first would cost a little time, but it's probably worth it. Speaking from experience, Adrenaline Rush is very useful for the Thorian and final boss. And you can reliably stunlock (biotic-lock?) the latter with just Shepard and one other party member using lift, although it's worth mentioning that I disabled the "squadmate AI uses powers" option for that battle, which costs less time on 360 than on PC.
Bonus talents are exclusively NG+ iirc, so that's out.
Also, I just noticed that post about getting to the Normandy from the Consort Chambers. Definitely useful for 100%, although I still have to route out the Citadel (been meaning to do that for almost two years now ).
You have the non-citadel route planned out? Because the citadel is the only thing i've really worked on. The rest of the route seems a lot more daunting. I'd love to see your route for the collectibles. I'm also pretty interested in your Noveria and Feros routes for 100%, as those have proven quite tricky. My noveria route hasn't really come together, and I can't figure out a way to do Feros:Data Recovery without triggering plot advancement, forcing you to do natural route for feros.
My rough citadel route is this:
Start with Earthborn background
citadel 1 is the same as in the regular run, except: pick up OSD from fist post spectre pick up Citadel: Scan the Keepers then, fast travel to lower wards, pick up Citadel:The Fan and fast travel to c-sec, get garrus and wrex. On leaving the citadel, you can pick up the consort chamber fast travel point from out of bounds. Then on falling into the normandy, you can line it up so that you land in the cargo bay to talk to garrus for his quest.
Citadel 2: do "Snap Inspection," since you can't do that during the detention Clip back into the normandy to land in the cargo bay and get a garrus conversation.
pre citadel 3: "UNC: Privateers" "UNC: Missing Marines" "UNC: Asari Diplomacy"
Citadel 3: This is done during the detention After getting off the normandy, you can clip and fall into c-sec and do Citadel: The Fourth Estate Fast travel to consort chambers, pick up Citadel: Asari Consort Fast travel to Flux, complete Citadel: Negotiator's Request and pick up Citadel: Rita's Sister walk out of Flux and complete Citadel: Reporter's Request and Citadel: Our Own Worst Enemy Walk to med clinic, triggering first visit, fast travel to citadel tower Complete Citadel: Planting a Bug and turn in UNC: Missing Marines and UNC: Privateers Fast travel to med clinic, pick up Citadel: Doctor Michel Fast travel to Chora's den, complete Citadel: Old Friends, talk to Jenna for Citadel: Rita's Sister, talk to septimus for Citadel: Asari Consort Fast Travel to C-Sec, pick up Citadel: Jahleed's Fears, talk to Chellick for Citadel:Rita's Sister Fast Travel to Chora's den, talk to Morlan for Citadel: Doctor Michel, turn in Citadel:Scan the Keepers, Talk to Jax for Citadel: Rita's Sister Go upstairs and turn in Citadel: The Fan Fast Travel to C-Sec, Turn in Citadel: Jahleed's Fears and Citadel: Rita's Sister Fast Travel to Med Clinic, turn in Citadel: Doctor Michel Fast Travel to Flux, Complete Citadel: Schells the Gambler, pick up Citadel:Signal Tracking Take Elevator to wards access, scan signal source for Citadel:Signal Tracking Take Elevator up to Presidium, complete Citadel: Presidium Prophet and Citadel: Family Matter and investigate source for Citadel:Signal Tracking Pick up UNC: Hostile Takeover, turn in Citadel:Signal Tracking Fast travel to Embassies, Complete Citadel: Xeltan's Complaint and Citadel: Homecoming, turn in UNC:Asari Diplomacy Fast travel to Consort Chambers, turn in Citadel: Asari Consort, then clip to the normandy, getting the third garrus conversation.
e: Anyways I found a thing:
I don't know where else you can do this, but certain triggers wait for you to stop switching your weapon before activating, so if you start switching your weapon again the moment you finish (by using a free scrolling mouse), you can hold off the cutscene indefinitely. Then, if you unload the zone containing the trigger, it will never activate.
Actually I had a fair amount of testing data (ie Mako routes) for the resources, insignias and writings - which died along with the hard drive they were on - and very little on the Citadel. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to crunch the numbers and even figure out whether the Paragon or Renegade special quest is faster for collection (my hunch is Renegade - easy to navigate planet with heavy metal deposits). That said, it's not so bad that I didn't really route the Citadel, because being able to hit the Consort Chambers area while OoB would change the route a bit significantly.
It's also worth mentioning that because I play on 360, I can't rebind the Mako's jets to a scroll wheel, so the data may have been flawed anyway.
At any rate, I'll do some testing at some point on your Citadel route and hopefully recompile my collection data sooner rather than later. Glad to see you've been thinking about it, though.
Binding the mako jets to the scroll wheel doesn't do anything. The jets don't fire.
Also, what do you mean about the alignment quests? Don't you need to do both of them?
Also, the things I've been doing in noveria:
Might be useful. Also, there's a clip that takes you from the port hanshan mezzanine to the top of the garage, but I haven't figured out how to get in bounds.
Mako jets: I remember something about being able to gain massive speed by firing them at a certain rhythm over flat ground after bouncing. Probably segmented only at best anyway.
Alignment quests are the ones that you need 70% (iirc) Paragon or Renegade to unlock. It is possible to unlock both in the same playthrough, but iirc to do so requires glitches. Therefore only one should be required for 100% imo, even if both can be unlocked (see KOTOR 1 and 2 for precedent with "alignment" categories - admins feel free to interject). Renegade is faster because it just requires a persuade check, so even though the drive to the quest is longer it should save time over Paragon (really wish I remembered what these quests were called ), also as I said, Renegade is probably faster for resources.
Clipping and OoB is more your area of expertise, given how little I've messed with it. That's pretty much on you at this point, though I'm perfectly willing to do the grunt work routing resources, quests and such throughout the galaxy.
As for the video above, I had trouble telling what part of Noveria you were trying to clip into. Skipping the Mako part would be killer, but quest requirements would kill most of the remaining possibilities' time savings.
Edit: Both "alignment" quests are in Hades Gamma. Renegade (Nonuel, Plutus System), definitely has an advantage over Paragon (Chohe, Cacus system) in terms of raw resources/artifacts on the planet itself. The outlier planets are irrelevant because both systems are unlocked with 80% Paragon or Renegade, but only one quest is unlocked based on Shepard's alignment (without glitching to get both to 80%), and the route would therefore most likely visit both systems. Because Nonuel has better resources than Chohe, even though the ideal route may require a return to Normandy on both worlds Nonuel probably comes out ahead. Even then, only the Asari Writing on Chohe would require a return, but there are several excess Writings elsewhere - definitely something for me to test out.
That part of noveria is where you need to go for "Noveria: Quarantine" You can skip the setup for the quest and just go straight into the room. It might not be worth it in SS, but there it is.
Also, I was almost certain that it was possible to do both alignment quests without glitches. At least, according to the guide on the mass effect wiki, there's enough points to hit 90% on both bars pre-ilos.
I can see that, although you may have to put more into Charm and Intimidate than I'd like for a new game run because a fair amount of it requires persuade checks and a lot of them require 7 or more points. Either way it could be argued that doing both quests in the same playthrough is not intended.
Or you could just have a nice conversation with Lorik Qui'in (for those who don't know, you can repeat a persuade check and get all the Paragon/Renegade points you need, and it only requires 5 points in Charm or Intimidate respectively) but I still think only one of the two quests should be required for 100%.
Also, minimizing visits to each sector is a good thing, and therefore the ideal time to hit Hades Gamma would be before Noveria because of the UNC: Hostile Takeover quest - one of the two targets is in Hades Gamma (the other is in Gemini Sigma, which doesn't complicate things at all) and you finish the quest in the Horse Head Nebula.
Doing both quests is possible without glitches, even if it is really hard. Why would you say that it isn't intended, when the game includes alternate criteria for unlocking the opposing quest when you've already unlocked one? How convenient it is to do a quest isn't really relevant for the definition of 100%. If it were, I'd rather do both alignment quests and skip Feros:Data Recovery . Plus, you don't actually need to do anything other than get a bunch of renegade from noveria and get a bunch of paragon from the monkies, and spend a few seconds extra on the galaxy map.
I wasn't aware that the requirements went up to 90% for the second unlock, which does sort of negate my argument that allowing you to get both (with or without glitches) was just an oversight by the developers. I also forgot about the monkey glitch, no doubt because I never used it.
One thing I may investigate is how easily you could get to 80% Renegade before the monkey glitch (so basically right after Feros), without doing Noveria because that could save a little time. Probably not feasible, but I may check it out later. In the meantime there are more important things to figure out, like the resource route.
It's probably more efficient to get renegade naturally in most cases than through the glitch, anyways. Talking to lorik takes a while, and you'd have to do it quite a few times.
The good thing about this game is that the resource route is entirely independent of the overall assignment order route, so any work done on that will be good forever. At least, that's the case on PC. Isn't there a glitch on xbox that lets you get two resources from a single source?
