Hi,

I would like to discuss the rules for Individual Level runs (any%) for the game Lucky Luke: On the Daltons' Trail.


There are 11 Levels and 3 boss levels.

You can select Level 2 to Level 11 with a password. In the main menu go to options > password and enter the password. There are four different symbols and the passwords are 4 symbols long.
Level 1 can be selected by starting a new game.

I think that the boss levels after Level 1 (City), Level 5 (Mine) and Level 11 (final level) should be extra individual levels instead of parts of the level runs, because at least the second and last boss seem to be RNG based.
There is a way to select these levels too. In the PC version you can edit the file "installation_path/win/config.txt".
When you change the line "StartLevel = 1" and replace 1 by another number, you will start at that part of the game instead of in the main menu screen.
You can even start at video sequences between levels with this cheat.

To select the first boss set the start level to 3.
To select the second boss set the start level to 11.
To select the final boss set the start level to 24.


I think that it makes no sense to divide Level 10 (lumberjack contest) into three individual levels, because the first and second contest are like autoscrollers (mash buttons to fill the bar, then press another button to do one hit). The last contest is boxing and this seems to be RNG based whether the enemy blocks your attacks or not.


So here are my suggested rules:

1. Level Selection

* Start a new game to select Level 1
* Use a level password to select Level 2 to 11
* Use the config file to select the bosses after Level 1, 5 and 11

2. Timing

* Timing starts when you gain control.
* Timing ends when you lose control. The level endings are different and the point of losing control is different as well. Therefore I made a list of when you lose control in each level:

Level 1: After blowing away the boxes and walking to the right side of the screen. You lose control right after the barrel.
Level 1 Boss: When you hit the boss the third time.
Level 2: When the screen turns black after reaching the train driver.
Level 3: After you hit the second boss the third time and land on the ground.
Level 4: When you "talk" to the Indian with all moon pearls collected.
Level 5: When you open the last door.
Level 5 Boss: When you hit the boss the fifth time and land on the ground.
Level 6: When you talk to the Indian with all totem parts collected.
Level 7: When you defeat the third enemy.
Level 8: When you open the doors to the mine.
Level 9: When the screen turns black after reaching the exit of the mine.
Level 10 - Challenge 1: After you removed the last part of the tree.
Level 10 - Challenge 2: After the bell touches the top of the pole and the bird flies away.
Level 10 - Challenge 3: When you defeat the enemy.
Level 11: After you killed the last enemy in the third area.
Level 11 Boss: When you hit the boss for the fifth time.

3. Other

* All levels must be finished.
* You are not allowed to use any cheats except for the boss levels (set StartLevel only, no other cheats).

I pretty much agree with you. The manual refers to the lumberjack section as the level (without an 's' at the end) and to each part as a 'trial'. I would also combine them into one. I agree that the level 1, 5 and 11 bosses qualify as separate levels. Opposed to in-level bosses, the platform levels before these bosses end with a celebration dance and a load screen, which in this game seem to be some of the signs of a new level (except in the case of the lumberjack level).

I haven't looked at your timing suggestions in detail. But assuming they reflect character control, like you say, they sound good to me.
