This is interesting, however component will allow you to capture at all the resolutions that the intensity supports. Component can't do 1800p60, but neither can the intensity. My recommendation is to just capture with component. I've done most of the Halo series cutscenes for the Halo.Bungie.Org cutscene library, and there is absolutely zero visual difference between HDMI and Component as far as noise goes. I've done lots of encoding, and as long as your source capture is good (Uncompressed or HUFFYUV / PRores / DNxHD) the final product will be the same.
If your monitor doesn't have component, just go component in to the Intensity, then HDMI out of the intensity to your TV.
This is good to know if you are capturing 1080p60 over HDMI though!
I'm trying to find the equivalent in stores in Sweden and I'm kinda new to the whole HDCP technology and what I need to do etc.
I'm thinking I've found such a thing. Maybe. I can't compare with the converter Carcinogen linked to since if I go to its specifications tab, it's just empty. So I'm wondering now, if I find something that says "HDMI version: 1.3 with HDCP" would that be something I can use for this purpose or do I need to keep looking and hope to find something else?
EDIT Also, going to do this with the Elgato Game Capture HD, not the Intensity.
I bought a HDMI splitter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/) the other day because I needed one anyway for my AverTV HD DVR. Turns out it the thing strips HDCP out of the signal when it splits off.
Initially I thought it was my drivers playing tricks on me since I have the modified drivers that allowed you to get around the HDCP if you loaded the media center. Cleared those out and updated to/installed the latest ones from the website; lo and behold my PS3 can still be viewed just fine via Amarec without media center or anything. Even more so, I can even watch/record a inserted Blu-Ray I have. (https://i.minus.com/ibxTlik8YDMFnc.jpg)
While I don't have any other HDMI capable capture cards to completely verify this, I figured I may as well say it in here anyway.
I have the other splitter mentioned and I can confirm that it does not strip off the HDCP. The LED on it as actually color-coded; un-encrypted streams show red, encrypted are blue. It does not strip off any of it.
That said, the other splitter has been ordered. Now I can actually consider PS3 stuffz.
So like. I'm glad the splitter is working out for you Omnigamer.
I haven't had as much luck with another splitter I bought, so I'm going to order that thing. I'm just not sure what kind of power plug is on that splitter mentioned in the previous post and more importantly whether I need a converter to use it here in the Swedenlands.
Can anyone post a pic of the power plug for the splitter that works? Amazon isn't helping much.
The power adapter says it takes 100-240V 50/60hz, so a simple plug adapter would work. Or you can grab pretty much any 5V DC adapter with the right sized output plug.
...I actually have one of those for my SNES, since the used unit didn't come with a power cable. To the Amazons!
EDIT: Apparently, the seller doesn't ship to Sweden. I'm guessing it's domestic (UK) only. I am hereby humbly requesting someone to be my proxy in this purchase.
I've noticed the same thing as well, there seems to be a rather large number of identical looking hardware with different branding. No idea if they have the same lack of HDCP, but I wouldn't be surprised.
My guess is that they just buy their cases from the same supplier. The boards inside are most likely *not* all the same. Some have different features.
My guess is the exact opposite, that they get their hardware all from the same supplier, and then brand their own case. That's usually how OEM's work (heck, I'm sure the OEM provides a blank case as well, and the distributor just puts their own branding on it). Now whether or not you get the same hardware revision is another matter entirely. But what I can tell with the ViewHD splitters, the newer revisions have a larger PCB, and thus need a larger case.
I have to agree with Tranq but only thing that worries me with these other designs is the description I linked above: Output Video: HDMI 1.3 + HDCP1.0/1.1/1.2
I got my mini splitter and it does strip HDCP. I don't know about the quality of the product however. The video would "glitch" every now and again. I don't know if this is a fault of the unit or the PSU. A fire hazard really. Until I can properly confirm these are of good quality, stay away unless you want your house burned down. Hopefully it's just a PSU issue and can be rectified with a better one. Even the plug insert was giving me issues.
HDMI vs Component on PS3 is night and day. Even the system menu is so much cleaner on HDMI.
Maybe it's just a case of generally bad build quality on your end. I've had my ViewHD one plugged in since I got it and have yet to run into any video glitches despite having it split a signal for hours at a time.
Make sure that you keep your splitter in a well ventilated area, from what I have read these things tend to overheat if put in a warm/stuffy environment.
