Inexistence: 2010-03-28 02:01:14 pm
Yes, Inexistence is a word.
Level 16: 38.95

Got Level 16 out of the way. I'm really happy with how it turned out. That level is hard.

I'll get started on another of the remaining levels.

Only 3 left. Level 7, Tunnels, Level 12, Structure, and Level 19, Dangerous Compactor. I think I'll work on Structure next. Anyone wanting to do the other 2?

Okay, got Structure done. 0:37.31, I'm quite happy with it. I'll upload when I get chance. Guess Tunnels next. I'm terrible with the compactor levels. Please someone do that one!

Since I knew no one else would do it: Level 19 (Dangerous Compactor) in 19,22.

This level is simply not meant for Speedrunning but I feel I have this pretty much as low as it can go. Most of the run is following a set route but at the end there is a bit of improvisation as the placement of the codes is just horrible and there is no grappable surface on the roof. I got a 22;52, a 21;60, a 20;84 then a 20;20 before getting this. It took ages from getting the 22;52 and I really pushed myself to get a low time.

This means there is only 1 level left! Level 7 I believe which I think Inexistence said he would do, so now I am done as I believe the 7 levels I have done are pretty optimal.

Edit: I have done Level 1 in 41:87 which is pretty much as fast as I can seem to get it. It's so horrible having to wait 24s to start attempts on this level because of the intro. I will do Level 21 on hard (LLCD did it on normal) then we just need you to do Level 7 and that's it!

Nice one dude! I'm working on Tunnels, but I'm pretty busy with stuff at the moment, so it might still be a while. Might be better for anyone willing to try it too

Also, I did Level 12. I don't have it uploaded, I will when I get chance. I have a time of 37.31 for it.

we have lift off
Level 1 in 41;87
Level 21 in 13;93

I did these two levels as LLCD's runs of these were on normal. I improved level 1 by a few frames and level 21 by just over 3.5s. Level 21 is probably my most optimised level so far, I got a 14;08 and a 14;07 before getting this; a 13 requires pretty much perfection.

So just level 7 now and then this is done!

I have also done a playlist of all the record runs so far.

IL Table:

Level 1: 41:87 ridd3r
Level 2: 20:22 ridd3r
Level 3: 12:24 LLCoolDave
Level 4: 18:43 ridd3r
Level 5: 19:85 ridd3r
Level 6: 23:60 Inexistence
Level 7: 64:58 ridd3r
Level 8: 16:27 ridd3r
Level 9: 25:48 ridd3r
Level 10: 28:58 LLCoolDave
Level 11: 21:81 Inexistence
Level 12: 37:31 Inexistence
Level 13: 20:71 LLCoolDave
Level 14: 19:70 LLCoolDave
Level 15: 18:66 LLCoolDave
Level 16: 38:95 Inexistence
Level 17: 27:72 ridd3r
Level 18: 26:88 ridd3r
Level 19: 19:22 ridd3r
Level 20: 19:43 ridd3r
Level 21: 13:93 ridd3r
Level 22: 11:85 LLCoolDave
Level 23: 30:83 ridd3r

Levels in bold need redoing.

I only own the demo for this game, although I probably will buy it since it's a really entertaining game!

Here's a trick that I've discovered:

A) If you hook yourself to a wall, turn around and press forward, and press jump you gain some distance (no height).

B) If you hook yourself to a wall, turn around and press forward, unhook your hook and THEN press jump, then you do a jump upward and gain a little bit more distance and some height.

C) If you hook yourself to a wall, turn around and press forward, and press a jump-key that is programmed with lots of jumps (ie an AHK-script) you get a lot more distance!

I hope this will be useful. You guys should try the AHK-jump/Super-jump or whatever you'd like to call it.

AHK isn't permitted in SDA runs any longer.

Well, luckily for the Grappling Hook runners this trick is quite easy to do even without AHK. I just tried it and you just double-tap the jump button instead of pressing/holding the AHK-script, just make sure you double-tap as fast as you can. It's not hard to do without AHK at all, but if you're having problems with this trick you can try with AHK just to see how it looks.

Good luck, I hope this trick will be useful!

I didn't even think of that. But yeah, mouse-wheel would be perfect for it!
Any examples of where it would actually be useful to speed up a level? Most of the time you don't hang around long enough to pull off tricks like that unless it could help skip part of a level, but I can't think of any places off the top of my head.

It could very well be that it's a cool but pretty useless trick (due to the level-designs). I've only played the demo, but I can't find any place where "superjump" would be faster in the first 5 levels at least.
Yes, Inexistence is a word.
Unfortunately it's impossible to bind jump to mousewheel as far as I can tell. I even emailed the creator asking if I could alter the bindings file to add a jump to mousewheel and he said no. However, surely pressing space and shift as quickly as possible at the same time works, since then it presses jump twice as many times? Good fine Dale, I'm not sure if there'll be any uses, but hopefully there will

Level 20 in 14:50

I went through all the levels and ones I think needed redoing before submission were Level 2 (double jump can be used) and Level 20. I haven't done the double jump yet so I will leave that to someone else but I did Level 20 without too much trouble and beat LLCD's time by 5s. This leaves level 2 and 7 still to do.

Level 2 in 20;22

Level 2 with the double jump! It's such a horrible level to run because you have to wait for the lift so the first 13s can't be sped up. The double jump has to be done in a very specific place and at a decent speed in order to get the height required to obtain the 3rd code. You can strafe jump across the gap without the double jump but you don't get high enough to get the code. Unfortunately this limits how you strafe jump and so it may look like the strafe jumping can be done better (strafing more around the corner) but then you won't end up in the right place to jump; so I think this is pretty decent. I keep saying it but I am finished with this game now! I have been over some of the levels to improve them and now all that is left is completing Level 7 so someone please do that!

If LLCD and Inexistence are cool with their levels then I suggest we submit when level 7 is done.

Edit: My Level 4 really needed redoing. Took a while but here it is: Level 4 in 18;43

I'm happy with the rest of my levels.

Um, just a quick question: How do you do a double jump? Do you just press jump twice?
we have lift off
Well there are several buttons assigned to jump, for example space and shift so you need to press one then the other quite fast; it also needs to be done right near the edge of a block. That should be enough for you to get it, it's not too hard. In terms of other places to use it I can't really think of any, it barely gives you any extra distance over just doing some good strafe jumping. The reason you have to use it there is to get the extra height needed to get the code.

Well I have my 11 levels ready but I spoke to Inexistence and it looks like he may not have the raw files of his runs (only XVid encodes) and LLCD I don't think is happy with all of his but I haven't heard back from him really. Worst case is 12 levels need doing so I'd like to request that if anyone wants to do any of the remaining levels then please feel free!

That's a shame. Well I don't even own the game, nor does my computer manage to record movies while playing Grappling Hook, so unfortunately I won't be running this game anytime soon. I just think that this game is so well suited for speedrunning and it would be a real "looker" of a speedrun.

Agreed, it would also be under 10 minutes! I may do a couple more levels but I never planned on doing as many levels as I already have, I just wanted to do a few. I'm hoping that a few people will do a few levels and then it will all be done, maybe Inex and LLCD will present some of their levels as well. This project is half done with only my levels as it is so come on people, let's finish this!
Yes, Inexistence is a word.
Okay, I re-ran Level 6, got a faster time, so I have the proper file for it. I also still had levels 12 and 16. Only level 11 didn't make it, which is a very difficult one, just because of the getting 4 star codes while falling at the end. I'll try running it again, see if I can get it. We need this IL table!

Good to see you back! So assuming you get level 11 that leaves:

Level 3 - LLCD noted 11;xx is possible, need to ask his thoughts.
Level 7 - Needs doing.
Level 10 - He says you can't get to the last lift on an earlier cycle which if true means he should be happy submitting this.
Level 13 - This is actually a pretty good run, again need to ask him.
Level 14 - There is a consistent way to get the first jump at the right height and you don't need a run up to strafe jump at the end.
Level 15 - Looks pretty good, if he wants to improve this then he can but an improved run would use the exact same strat which he came up with.
Level 17 - Pretty good
Level 22 - Good. He says he misses the teleport at the end but it costs him basically nothing.

EDIT: Spoken to LLCD

In summary:
Level 7,14,17 and 22 need doing. LLCD is happy to submit levels 3, 10, 13 and 15.

Anyone reading this topic, ridd3r's done a hell of a lot of work on this already, as has LLCD. I've not done as much as I wish I had, but I'm a little bogged down with stuff at the moment. Anyone with the game, willing to run, please feel free to run these remaining levels with us. It'll be great to have more people and always good to share the load of the run Smiley

I tried buying Grappling Hook tonight, but ran into a weird problem with my banks website and quite frankly can't be bothered to read through bank-stuff tonight. However, tomorrow I will most likely buy the game and look for bugs, checking out your runs and such. But like I said, my computer isn't strong enough to record Grappling Hook with Fraps so I won't be able to contribute to the run in that sense.

Great to hear that you guys still plan to finish this run!  Smiley

I record at 60fps so I don't get a red message at the bottom complaining about low fps, my comp is quite good but this game hardly requries high spec, I'm sure 90% of people on here should be OK.

I plan to do Level 22 and maybe 14 but seriously I would be more than happy to find someone else has done these Smiley Some of the levels I have done have been tough (Level 18 & 19) but generally it doesn't take too long to get a good run of a level for this game.
