Hi, I have always been really fascinated by speedrunners.

I have wanted to try it for a while now, but never really got around to it, as I know I will need to spend a lot time practicing and getting used to it.

I would like to know what a good game to start with would be. PC would be preferable.

I want something that I wouldn't have too much trouble getting through. Like I said earlier, I know it will take a lot of practice and time, but I finally have to time to do this.

Any help would be great Smiley

I think most people will say the same: just play something you enjoy and you are willing to invest the time in. Sure some games are harder to get down than others, but you having fun with it is the most important thing. That said, you could look into some shorter runs (like 5-15 min), just to get a feel for running. I only started running about 3 weeks ago and the only runs I currently do are between 2 and 5 minutes, but while they are bite sized and easy to pick up there is a lot less room for error in such a short run as opposed to something like a 30-60 min one and you might feel as though your progress stagnates a lot quicker.

Just browse through your collection and pick something you like, check out some runs and see if it entices you. Worst case scenario: you stop and pick something else.

Also just getting an initial time, no matter however terrible it might be, is a huge step in the right direction Wink Having a visual representation of your progress and something to chase is the best motivation ever. Good luck with the runs.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'd say pick a game you love and just play through it regularly like 10 times or so. If you still enjoy the game, then start looking at speedrunning strats for the game. There's not much more to it than picking a game you love to play. If you keep at it long enough you'll eventually get good at it.
Bossanova
I cam here for pretty much what rudyxx said.  Play a game you love.  I'm totally new to speed running, but I've had a love affair with the Legacy of Kain games for longer than I can remember, specifically Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance.

I've been pondering if it's even possible, given how these games have unskippable cut-scenes, but I at least plan to make the attempt.
As previously stated, and from the advice I was given when I started doing runs: Pick your favorite game, and give it a shot. First runs are always bad, so just do a little bit of research of the game you want to run, do a little bit of practice, and start up some runs.

As for the game, not too sure about any pc games to run. However, if you want to do it on the pc, a good amount of communities accept emulators, if you wanted to play a console game. (good example is the spyro and crash bandicoot communities)
i would love to start speedrunning the sly series on PS2 , totally want to get a capture card in order to stream, that way the viewers can help me :c
but my country is retarded and i have no idea where to by those kind of things. Undecided

I don't think there's enough charact
Obligatory play a game you enjoy.
That being said, it IS good to know what it's like to speedrun any game and to get the practice in.
If I were to recommend any game for you to start on, it would be Super Meat Boy, Super Mario World, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. All any%.
These games teach you the fundamentals of speedrunning in my opinion, and is easy (To a point) to pick up as long as you're thinking right.

You can start on anything you want and learn through experience, and don't be faltered by something like a hard glitch or trick.
Just try and do what you can and race against yourself.
You'll pick it up quickly.

Have fun, good luck and have fun!
I'm biased, but I really do think that Marble Madness (NES) is a great game to pick up and play through.  It's 4 and a half minutes tops, and getting better at the game in general simultaneously makes you better at speedrunning the game.
Dead Rising 3 Speed Runner
If it's your first time playing the game, play through just like you would with any other game, take notes of where stuff is and routes to take. Look around on the internet and see if someone else has speed ran or is still speed running the game to get a grasp of what tricks/glitches they do. Don't be afraid to talk to them and discuss how they started out speed running the game.

Overall a game should be something that you find fun and interesting, especially if you are thinking of running games like Final Fantasy.
Im about the start running resident evil games. Im going to start with the resident evil remake on the game cube

My advice for what game to pick is echoed from the above. Pick a game you like. It can be anything. then have a look online and see what kind of time people are posting. If you think the 1hr + ones are too much then pick another one. It really cant be stressed enough tho, you are speed running. there are a million nuances with this that make it a game in itself, it really doesnt matter what you pick in the end.

for me the best games to speed run are things where it is a clear A-B

Mario, megaman, sonic. do the level/game as fast as you cans eheh speed run . . . .  ANYWAY

Like i said im going to do GCN games as i have all of the old consoles in my house and i just like nintendo games for things like this, less  . . why so serious . .

im starting resi evil remake, why not start with me, at least we can then gauge improvement cos looking at some of the other runners of this game . . . im a way off yet!
Bruh-zilian speedboy
Pick a game you like. Practice. Do runs. Watch other people's runs to see what the game is like a speedgame. Don't be discouraged if your first run is bad. EVERYONE's first run is bad. Just keep practicing and doing runs, and remember to have fun while doing so.

Just out of curiosity, are you referring to the GC version of SA2 or HD re-release?
The name's Sheldor. InfiniteSheldor.
Yes, pick something you like. I started with Mirror's Edge and then went through all my games, considering them speedrunnable or not. I got some good games from it, and I guess you should just go through a game that you like or intrigues you, and consider - 'Is it speedrunnable?'

I've only recently starting getting serious about speedrunning myself and one thing I will say is run what you love but see if there is a community. I'm more or less on my own and its slow going.

Attempting runs in your existing collection is definitely a good way to start to get to grips with the possibilities.
As long as you can find enjoyment in a game after playing it time and time again, you can't really go wrong. It might help to find a game that is already routed and even better to find one that has a guide on how to speedrun it from someone in the community.  This is just a suggestion though, but I think it helps a lot of you pick one that has a guide, it's just so much easier to learn, say, a glitch with an explanation. Trying to just force trying to do a trick correctly can end up badly sometimes. Just make sure you ask everyone in the community that runs the game or has a knowledge of the game. Don't be shy to ask either, the majority of people are more than willing to help out someone new learn strats.  If you decide to pick a game that hasn't been run yet and want to route it yourself, that is still great, it depends on the person if that is more enjoyable or not.  You may find you enjoy glitch hunting more than running, which is also a great way to be in the community.  The bottom line is that you are having fun with the game you choose, don't force it.
Just started recently as well, although my Pick is Trojan a golden oldie :D.  The Current SDA time is 6:50 and my current best time is 7:18.  It´s short, sweet and doesn´t leave a lot of room for error but I enjoy playing it for an hour and a bit each night.  Anything you play a lot and wont mind putting work into.
