Viking it up
I'll be picking this game up soon, am currently still savoring casual play for now.  Trying to avoid spoiling any of the game for myself, and I want to do my own routing for both Lilac and Milla before I go find anyone else's routes, but I did find the super shield burst recoil trick on my third play session after buying the game.  So I dug around a little to see if anyone else knew about it, and I see you guys already do.  Watched one of your videos, HDL, and I was surprised at how much speed can be stacked with it - I'd already figured out high-jumping on my own, but had little success with overland speed boosting since I was testing stuff in an area that isn't flat.  Has Milla's ability to stack horizontal speed been nerfed, or can you still accelerate to obscene speeds?

I haven't even completed the game yet as I've been working on other things, and I want to 100% the game before I start working on running it.  Will probably start early next year.

Hi. I'm completely new here. Nice to meet you's. I heard about this place via the AGDQ stuff on youtube, for the record.

So. I happened upon this game by sheer chance, fell in love with it instantly. Done a casual playthrough and intend to do many more, but I really would like to start speedrunning this eventually and MAYBE in time using it to leapfrog into speedrunning in general. So, on that note, I watched one of HDL's runs and I have a few quick questions:

- Keyboard vs gamepad?

- I see you doing a low of low-trajectory Cyclones, without losing momentum at that. How? by holding Down.

- And how do you Cyclone on the ground? down+b while running

- Aand I see you getting slight bursts of extra height during jumps. I'm relatively sure but i'd like to make certain; You're pressing Cyclone then cancelling it with a kick, yes? yes

- What are the mechanics of doing that dive-kick(aerial down-b) as far as maintaining momentum goes? removes air friction. speeds you up if you land downhill.

- You also seem to be able to get a lot of kicks off on bosses in a single short jump; Usually 3, occasionally 4. ....How? I can only ever get 1. Are you Cyclone-ing->cancelling with kick? yes, and also just...kicking on the way up.

- I saw a few zips. I'd just like to clarify how they work; Cyclone'ing through an object that's moving down(relic maze), DragonBoosting while being pushed up(thermal base), or....something-ing...between a crate/shieldgem and the ceiling(dreadnought)....??? I would just try them myself(I will tomorrow if I don't have an answer by then), but I'd rather not spend half an hour failing due to there being some other mechanic or variable at play that I'm unaware of.

- The Dragon Boost reminds me a lot of the jetpack from Rocket Knight. Does it work the same? i.e. do you get extra distance for bouncing off walls? I couldn't tell. Yes.

- Is it a speed increase to jump while going downhill(like in old 2d sonics)? Slightly.

- Is there anything else I'm unaware of? I know to Cyclone immediately upon being kicked upwards, and I know about Mantalith's phase-skip. Anything else I didn't catch on to that I should know?

EDIT: Almost forgot. Who streams this game, and how often/when?

Meteor Swarm
I never noticed this thread yet..
I started learning this game (i don't aim for insane record, but 1H~ is my goal for this game my pb is around 1H12 atm).. and dear this game brutal to learn.
I'm using hdl route (atm learned the first 3 stages) with fews changes. I still have a lots of troubles keeping my speed constantly.

I also ran into a weird glitch that i can reproduce against level 3 sub boss (serpentine)
I was using a tech that can exploit is ia (not constantly) by standing on the lazer wall at the left and constantly attacking it (somes time he will just jump into your attacks and do nothing more)
But i accidently used the dragon rush and he skiped to the pursuit phase before i defeated him , tried it a fews time i can't reproduce it anymore.

Edit i just found a nice and better way to take shortcut in jade creek.

Quick thing to note/be careful of; If you Dragon-Boost through the 2nd screen transition in Fortune City(just after the large steps with the fireworks launcher enemies), the game softlocks and has to be restarted. Has happened to me twice, now.

And nice one, Rezard.
Meteor Swarm
The soft lock glitch is freaking annoying... Dunno how its append. For this part i generaly dragon boost diagonaly. And i rarely got stuck anymore.

you can also softlock the end of level 1 if you boost when the boss go up at the exact same time.

I think it may have something to do with how close you are to the screen when you start the boost; I've noticed it happens quite consistently if i boost from very close to the edge of the screen. If i boost across the transition from further away, however, my controls may still lock, but only for a brief moment, and it's just a matter of pressing Right again.
I'm guessing it's something to do with the game taking your controls away while you boost, and then missing the timing to give them back at the end of the boost because the screen transition interfered.
Meteor Swarm
It may also be related to save slot.
Ran into the glitch two time in a row. Deleted the save restarted in another slot, no more softlock.
Viking it up
Oh, is that what causes the softlock?  Had that happen to me twice in a row one night, and never since.  Thanks for the info.

I've started learning the game now, only done the first screen of Dragon Valley so far, but practicing is addictive with this game, so that one screen is really consistent.  :3
Just spent about 3 hours grinding out DV myself. down to 3:09, can still improve. Probably 3:04-ish?
Also, I'm losing 5 seconds to HDL's run before even the spider thing and i cannot for the life of me figure out how.
Viking it up
My best time leaving the first screen after the spider miniboss is :38, what's yours?  If you're above that, maybe I can figure out where you're losing the time - make me a highlight of one of your best tries from practice tonight and I'll take a look.

Dwang i can't get under 3:14 or 3:15 for DV. My fastest i think was 36 for leaving the mini boss but i failed just after. Normaly its 40~42.
But i think in this level i use a different route than anyone.

I think i found the trick for the ant. Dragon punch > cyclone (2 hit) > dive kick > normal hit.

Edit : I think the dragon punch can be extremely usefull if used well. I managed to get a nice speed boost with it after the spring area in DV1

I can spot lost time at 0:19 and 0:28. anywhere else?
HDL leaves that screen in 35s :/

And for good measure, my best overall run so far..

Well that's a :37 for first screen, better than me.  I'll have to look back at HDL's video when I have time, I have work in a few minutes.

Btw after the zip part in relic maze you can just do that. Its way faster than the usual strats.

Mantalith is a douche. I thought I had the phase skip consistent; got it about 6 times in a row. Nope. And It doesn't help that I can't figure out just which variable needs tweaking. Is it on a timer from when he was last biting? Is it to do with how early in his jump you hit him? How much health that phase had left? egh.
Anyway, I gave up and did the safe strat, managed a 4:34. Sub 4:30 would've been preferable, but I'll settle with that for now and move on to Fortune Night tomorrow.
Meteor Swarm
Finaly got under 3:10 In dv. I could clearly get under 3:05 or even less If i din't messed up 3 time. (slow part before the ant, accidental cyclone before the switch gate and totaly messed up after the mini boss) also 1 turn that worm is a fucking pain.. i got it like that 1/30.
Viking it up
Dang, Rezard, some of those cyclone trajectories are pretty sweet.  I think some of the routing is better than what I've seen HDL do.

Finally finished grinding out FN, and re-did/improved DV and RM beforehand
DV 3:02.62
RM 4:26.76
FN 4:34.15

The FN run is still very messy, but I can clean it up later; My primary goal is really just to learn and solidify in my memory all the routes and optimisations.

You mean the first time you see him? Just focus your attacks on the back 4 balls; The front 3 don't matter since you can hit them when he's trying to fireball you anyway. In other words, delay your very first attack so that it only hits the back 4.
As for the 1st part of the 2nd time you fight it, I dunno. Never managed to boot his face before he enters the ground again, but I'll try to figure out some consistent way.
Viking it up
I still can't do the DV miniboss worm 1 cycle.  I know you only need the back 4-5 sections, but I can't even get that once, let alone every time.

I get it about 2/3rds of the time, but it's some kind of weirdly specific set of motions/attacks/timings that i have no idea how to explain because i still doing it instinctively/by feeling. All i know is it's one slightly delayed ground kick followed by some air kicks maybe and then......uh.....eh. i have absolutely no idea until I'm actually doing it.

Also, subbed 3:00 on DV. Veeeerry happy about that.

Also Happy Santa-Day!

No idea. I suppose we could try that out a bit; moving to that exact pixel and trying to jump with all the same timings. I'll hazard that that's really kinda luck-based/inconsistent, though. Still, nothing lost by trying.
EDIT - I think you might be hitting the box at the exact moment that they're completely level with eachother. You hit one, the 'you bonked your head on a box' physics activate, clipping you through the other box, and initiating the zip.

On that note, I'm experimenting with a safer way of doing the mantalith phase-skip. Even if it works you'll only be able to do it once(skipping either the 4th or 5th phase), but even so it could be quite valuable; It's still difficult and precise to pull off, but...well, without the risk I see no reason to not do it.
I'll post a highlight and some instructions if I can figure out the specifics of it.

Got a 3:13.93 on my first full DV run after learning the whole thing.  Lots to clean up, but my first screen was around :36, which ties my best to the second, and is only one second slower than HDL (I know where I can make up the time but I'm sick of looking at screen 1).  This IL run also had my first one cycle on the miniboss, I think I understand him a little better now, but the more I understand him, the more it seems like it would be superhuman to be 100% consistent on him.  There are just too many variables to have to control and too little time.

I still want to fix a couple things on the third screen, so not moving on to RM just yet.  Relieved to finally be able to do the whole first level... it's crazy how frontloaded the difficult parts are in DV.  Everything after the miniboss is so easy.  Tongue

This happened tonight in practice.  She hopped out of the hole and immediately rolled all the way to the right.  Wasn't able to reproduce it.

I'm having trouble getting full height on upward dragon boosts.  Sometimes I get the full height, sometimes I fall short, like going up the waterfall logs.  Anyone have an idea why?
