Got a fast WR tonight! New World Record is 01:35:10.

http://www.twitch.tv/devv13/v/10002681

Altogether it was a better run to watch. I didn't get a taunt item until floor 12, no aftershave, and didn't get my optimal turrets till later.

I'll post floor times and update the 1st post with the new information later.

Shaved another 24-25 minutes off the WR. The devs got back to me that these are WRs.

New WR = 01:10:10

Intense run. There were many times in the middle - end game that I thought I was going to wipe, but it worked out.

Thank you for the kind words aqfaq! My goal is sub 1-hour. Then I can be at peace.
Hey, could you elaborate a little about your chosen characters and strategies involved? Would be interesting to read. Also, why was the audio muted on your current WR video? That's just silly.

Sorry for the audio. It was late at night and I decided to play music from spotify which twitch likes to mute due to copyright issues. If you would like another good run with audio here is a link:

http://www.twitch.tv/devv13/v/11499553 ***run starts at 4:30'ish and I mess up my splits a little midgame***.

I start with Chef Nanor and Max O'Kayne. The theory behind it is that Max is the only character that gets the endless expert passive at level 1 which gives you +2 science per turn. This is supposed to not only help fuel research but also give additional science to use Chef Nanors Active at Level 5 "Cooking with gas". This does a floorwide aoe that does 20hp/sec for 8 seconds. This skill helps to weaken waves as I massively open doors and spawn a large quantity of monsters. That way when the creatures get to the "kill room" they go down faster. Also if I activate chef when they are in the kill room it improves my dust count. The additional science from max allows me to reset that ability giving me an opportunity to do more floor wide damage. x1 = 160 damage, x2 = 320 damage, x3 = 480 damage etc.

I prioritize specific turrets that have worked for me in the past. Pre floor 3 I look for prisoner prod. Other than that I look for Tear Gas, Neurostun, Seablaster. I also attempt to level either smoking gun or kip cannon for a single target room that cleans up mobs if I don't get a taunt item. If I can pickup improvements for industry, science or food generation I do so if I can. The best time to research is if you find an artifact and the exit early. Stick a hero in the artifact room and you can accomplish 1-3 additional researches as the game mass opens doors while your running the crystal to the exit.

The key items I'm always looking for are: anything +speed to give to my crystal runner, Aftershave (allows for mass door opening and to not get pestered by monsters), taunt item (will keep monsters that rush the crystal in the kill/aoe room if you room jump properly). If you don't get a taunt item you still want to room jump in the aoe room but you build single target turrets behind the aoe room to finish off monsters that rush the crystal. For example a room with x1-3 seablasters, x1 tear gas, x2 neurostuns (not necessarly needed) can weaken silic destroyers as they walk through, but it will likely not kill them. A room directly after the aoe room with full powered KIP cannons (max science another reason for max o kayne) or smoking guns and a tear gas will finish off those monsters if they get through. Also note large spawns I will also be hitting Chef's active to do more damage. This is what I live on for my runs. If you do get a taunt item then you want to focus some levels on the character holding the taunt item. He will take damage from seablaster aoe and kamikazes that blow up in the room. Therefore the additional levels will provide that character with additional hp and defense to survive. I love giving a character like gork the taunt item because he is incredibly tanky (high hp and itemized high defense). Also his speed being so slow allows to room jump easily. His active gives him a speed boost if he ever needs to get away.

I hope this helps if you have anymore questions please feel free to let me know.
Makes sense. Thanks.

New time to beat 1:02:55.31! I tried a new strat. It's incredibly risky. Don't expect to complete many runs with it, but it is extremely fast late game and takes out the RNG of trying to get an aftershave. Essentially start with Golgy/Professor. I will post video later.

Welcome to Deenatary
Optimal is based upon playstyle and preference in this game. However, many starting choices step on the others toes. For example you likely won't start Golgy/Sara because they both are the same role of a door opener/crystal runner. Much like you probably won't see a Gork/Misha start (in a speedrun). I've seen Double operator start, DPS crystal runner start etc. etc. I like my current strat of Golgy/Professor.

Golgy is the only character in the game that gets Skulker ability as an active (basically reducing the RNG of getting an aftershave late game). Between a taunt item and aftershave...Aftershave is much more rare. Having golgy early also decreases your time in the first couple levels due to her speed. However, pairing her with an operator is a very risky strat. It essentially means on floor 2 you have a level 1 golgy opening doors by herself. It makes levels 2-3 harder but the additional resource gain will vault you into a much faster midgame in my opinion. After that all I'm looking for is a slow character to have a taunt item so they can room jump and I'm golden. It's then up to RNG to find the exits and have decent EMP/Spawns/dust productivity on the floors.

I would love to see other strats that people are running. Unfortunately I don't have a sample set to work off of so I can only speak from personal experience.

Also you can take Ayairi out of the mix above. Incredibly low % change you get that character and if you are going for speed no way would you pick random characters.
Quote from Devv13:

Oh, okay, I haven't played the game enough to know. Hypothetically, if Ayairi had an useful skill, then it might be worth restarting over and over just to start with that character. Any idea of the exact chance of getting Ayairi?

By the way, could a multiplayer run be potentially faster? Would be interesting to see a team run.
Welcome to Deenatary
Ayairi is such a low % chance its not worth listing as a character choice, but I do not know an exact %. A dev would have to confirm that one. One night I reset over and over about 30 times and didn't get to play the character. I did get Ayairi 1 time and it didn't seem like the wait was worth it.

Absolutely a coordinated multiplayer team would be faster than single player imo. harder to finish due to lack of a pause button for emergency heals on characters, but you have 2 sets of eyes that can handle different wings of the dungeon which puts you at an advantage. You just have to go in understanding which person is responsible for what, and every door opening to consistantly transfer resources. Also the lack of a pause would take out some uneeded delay.

Oh, I just realized an interesting and quite complicated thing about the character choices. The best characters in the beginning are not the same that are good in the middle of the game or at the endgame, right? So, maybe the optimal solution uses different characters in the beginning, the middle and the end?

With four characters chosen from a pool of 24, there are 10626 different character combinations. However, each character has different value depending on how far the character has progressed with its skills. For example, some character might be good only in floors 1-3. Another character might be the optimal choice around floors 6-7, but nowhere else. Because characters can be changed pretty much at any point, the number of possible combinations and strategy variations is astronomical.

Oh well, it seems that much of the speed comes from tricks that are not related to character choices, so the time difference between the optimal characters and the worst characters might not be that large. Interesting to see whether some new strategies emerge.

Edit: Oh, you posted the video of the latest record. Thanks!
There are a few speed tricks from character choices, such as taunt Nanor stalling from room to room with his DoT active up; 160 damage to everything per usage plus dust chance is really huge! Alternatively, characters like Ken who have massive damage and even more through their actives speed up the game a lot more simply by killing the monsters quickly and being able to keep opening doors because they take out some monsters before they get a chance to touch the characters. The main difference in characters is when you get a sub-par one. Characters like Joleri and Deena are generally only worth picking up temporarily to act as a ward for an unpowered room, or sometimes as an operator. These are the only characters I would 'trade up' generally, as your opening picks should be able to carry most of the game by themselves. In my [current] WR run just below [00:54:10], I picked up Mizi but traded her up for Max later on. Picking opening early-game characters with the intention to trade them for late-game characters in the run is far too inconsistent as what characters spawn, how many characters spawn, and their current level are all pretty random. However, 4 characters is always better than 3, regardless of how bad they are. Having an extra hand to light up a room is just too valuable for speed and safety.

Also, I really don't like Golgy/Josh as starters because you have no guaranteed damage and no Nanor. Nanor's Cooking With Gas is way too op to pass up, taunt or no taunt.

Finally, Golgy isn't the only character with Crawler - Dell Bradford has it too. May be more viable due to his higher wit with Operate, who knows?

NB: run has a bit of lag, but I fixed the problem afterward.
