EDIT: Sadly I abandoned this game quite a while ago :[

Well, hello there.

I've been a SDA fan for quite some time now but all I really did was watching a few speedruns. So with this being my first appearance on the forums, I might not be familiar with what kind of games are allowed to speedrun here.

This is my plan: I want to speedrun "Driver: San Francisco" on PC, (a pretty new game tbh, released in october) to support this awesome site/project. But as i read through the forum and checked the speedrun lists I noticed that there aren't hardly ANY racing games. Maybe that's because SDA started with FPS games and pro-racers never ran across this site so far. On the other hand the first Driver game got a run - and as Driver SF is pretty similar to that one (as far as I know), I'm hoping to get somewhat positive feedback.

I guess I should start with describing the game a little. The story mode mainly consists of driving missions and dares (stunt stuff), many of them being not relevant to progress in the game. I'm not sure yet, if it's possible to split the game into these missions, because you only need to complete a certain amount of them, so finding the shortest path in the "mission tree" could be part of a speedrun. Furthermore it seems that alot of missions start from different positions on the map, depending on when exactly you start them (but I'm not sure). Glitches that might save time have been found, but patched shortly after. Right now it seems this game will have to be played the way it's meant to be. I can't predict how long a run's going to be, yet, I'm simply guessing it's about 2 hours, not much longer.

So, what are your thoughts about running this game? It seems racing games in general aren't welcome on SDA, because basically they're about to be completed as fast as possible anyways, so it's not very special. I, however, would like to see more racing games on this site - and probably racing fans in general, too. I'm missing NFS games on here, although the NFS series is way more linear than the Driver series.
Let me know if training this game and planning routes through the city would pay off for me... or if I'd waste my time, in case there'd be no way for this game to be accepted ever (which would be SAD Cry ).

Thanks in advance for some feedback
Thread title:
Hi

I was wondering when this game would show up on forums and I'm glad it eventually did, although I actually wanted to run it myself in future, because it's the second best Driver game in the series right after the very first one and I think it's underappriciated. It will definitely be accepted by SDA as the first Driver is already there. As for the planning, I'm not really sure how to help. You just have to do trial/error with all the missions to see which ones are faster to complete in order to unlock next main story missions. I don't really remember, but don't you actually need to buy at least any car to drive around town or are all the missions doable right from the map ? There could be some money strategy involved.

I too would like to see more racing games runs on SDA and I plan to change it soon Smiley My next project - NFS III
Nice to see other racers here, Ewil Smiley

I'm definitely looking forward to your NFS project, good luck on that one.

You're right, trial and error will be the first step. Besides that I plan looking for any bugs/glitches.. I have to be a little creative I guess. As far as I remember you don't need a car for the main story missions. Funky money strategies will only be seen in a 100% run, sadly. But I'm not aiming for 100%, that would take several hours, seriously... let's start with a simple any% run Smiley
Going to restart singleplayer soon to test some things, it kind of sucks to have all your challenges deleted, though.

Overall I might need more than 3 months to pull this off, so go ahead and join me when you're ready, or simply beat me afterwards Grin

I'm back... no, actually I never left.
I've been very busy the last two months and didn't find much time to make progress with this run.

This is what I did since I started this thread:

- some planning: I finished planning and testing for the first 8 segments
- a casual SS run, ending up with 3 hours and 29 minutes
- I bought Fraps and a new harddrive, now I'm able to keep all my raw files before encoding
- learned how to use Anri-chan
- practiced the game of course, I got decent stats on multiplayer now =)
- tried to use a steering-wheel but didn't feel comfortable with it, this game is too arcade-ish
- found a glitch which sadly isn't useful
- finished the first segment (I think)

This speedrun is going to be a segmented any% run. I thought alot about doing single segment, but I doubt that'd be worth watching. Running this game is all about luck manipulation and a single segment run would have alot of mistakes in it, because the randomness of the traffic is terrible Smiley

I'm planning to post every segment in this thread, along with some comments. It would be cool to get as much feedback as possible, like suggestions for optimization or simply if it looks "fast enough" for SDA standarts.
Here we go:

Segment 01

Time: 00:40.283
Number of attempts: 115

Comments:
There are no ingame timers in the storymode, so I timed it manually. The frame I chose to start timing is the frame where the "Loading" text disappears and the last frame is the one where the "Loading" text appears again.

I actually got 00:40.283 two times, so I picked the run that looked more solid with a little less sliding. This is a very simple "reach-the-checkpoint" mission, but it involves some luck manipulation. Generally the traffic in this game is NOT completely random, it looks like that at first, though. I found out that there are 3 different initial car placements in this level - I got the best one in this attempt, of course. In one of the bad starting states you spawn 20 meters behind, in the other one agent Tanner is a jackass and often crashes into the Audi before you even gain control of the car. I basically had to reset every time I got a bad spawn, which was 60% of my attempts, in order to save 0,2 - 0,3 seconds. However, no matter which spawn you get, the cars are always the same, only their initial position is slightly different.
On the other hand the traffic behaviour is completely random, so there will be alot of luck manipulation going on in the later (longer) missions.

More segments following soon...
I was wondering what hapenned to you.

Looks very optimized, although I wonder if it wouldn't be faster to avoid crashing into stuff in 0:50, but I guess the traffic is too tight.

Yay, someone's doing a speedrun of this game! Favorite driving game ever; like GTA but all the un-fun parts eliminated.

First segment looks good. With the amount of effort you're putting in and how close you're cutting all the corners it definitely looks SDA-worthy. I'm looking forward to the high-speed boosting later on.
Update incoming. What should I say, I've been busy the last month and will still be busy the next 2-3 weeks, so I'm proceeding very slowly. I'm positive that I can finish this project in 2012, though, but can't really say more :D.

@Ewil: I forgot to answer on that: It's not really avoidable to crash into stuff there, the bus is always blocking the street, even when you get the best spawn. However, it doesn't slow me down at all I think. Too bad I can't see my speed, yet Smiley

@RandomEngy: Thanks for your feedback and for motivating me :D. Your post is the reason why I hurried to finish Segment #02 the last 3 days.

Segment 02

Time: 01:02.183
Number of attempts: 141

Comments:
This segment was harder to master than the first one. The good thing about it is that there aren't different spawns this time, so no instant-restarts needed. However, there's the jackass Jericho, raging across San Francisco in his jet-fueled armored van (?!). He likes to smash cars in front of you or simply push you against some walls - alot of luck manipulation was needed. Overall I got 4 out of 141 attempts which I finished and timed, the rest ended in carnage. I tried to use him so that he would boost me with his super speed, but the AI is too good in this game. If you keep driving in front of him, he won't overtake you. I could've blocked him to avoid flying cars all around me, but that would cost too much time, I had to stay on the racing line. Near the end I couldn't avoid to hit the car as it's always in my way (remember: the traffic is always the same). Generally crashing at high speed into stuff doesn't make you lose alot of momentum and is often faster than hitting the perfect racing line. Wallriding will be a part of the later levels.

I recently watched your Driver speedrun again, Ewil. And I felt like I had to travel back in time and do the famous driving test :). If possible, I'd like to do ILs of all the challenges later and have them added to the SDA game page.
So here it is, slightly slower than your version but I think the parking deck is bigger Tongue

IL: Blast from the past

Time: 00:31.60
Number of attempts: 264

Comments:
I came up with this route pretty quickly and it works very well I think. It would be cool to check the PS3- and XBOX-highscores in order to find out if there are faster times... maybe this route can still be optimized, idk. So far I haven't found out how or where to access those highscores, though. If anyone could help me out with this, you'd make me happy!

Looking forward to drive other cars in later segments!! These are really annoying, controlling oversteer with an analog stick is a pain.

Another solid segment. I'm subscribed to the thread; I'll just watch new segments as they come out.

You can't really compare both driving tests since they both have different gameplay. Besides, there is a faster way to do it in original Driver that was discovered later Smiley
Is this dead? I was actually looking at whether any of these types of driving games have speed runs as I was interested in completing this game as quickly as I can just for the fun of it.
destroy them with lazers

I'm still planning to finish this run, but I'm not playing this game atm. Hopefully I'll get bored of Diablo3 soon, so I can return.
Only till they release a new patch Cheesy I know it too well myself...
I just picked up the game again and tried to achieve a decent time on one of the challenges. I succeeded, even though I think this time isn't good enough for submitting an Individual Level run. I'm going to keep practising... I feel obliged to finish this speedrun, including all Individual Level challenges. Anyways here's the outcome of the last week:

IL: Golden Gates

Time: 02:22.16
Number of attempts (so far): 364

Comments:
I can't compare my records to the ingame world leaderboard, because Ubisoft sadly decided to not update it anymore. I remember that back in January 2012 (when the leaderboard still has been updated) the world record was 02:25.5. I think this run is pretty good, but I'm aiming for 02:21 mid or low for submitting. Theoretically 2:20 or even 2:19 would be possible, but that's insanely difficult and would take 100+ hours practice on this track alone.

I plan on a segmented run of this game someday Smiley
Yeah me too, but no idea when Tongue Same for Driver 1 SS.

Definitely a long run, but I wouldn't mind at least being a part of the run, now that I ran through the game again a few days ago.
No, wait.
I'll get that WR and fight other people to keep that WR mine. Someone please make it on speedrun.com if they haven't already. I've already made 3 in a month lol
I'd love to see more runs of this game. I recall the earlier versions of the game being glitchy but I think they were more detrimental than beneficial lol (teleporting pedestrians)

I'm getting an HDTV soon with HDMI (yes, my current TV doesn't even have HDMI...) so I can use my Elgato Game Capture HD and then record some runs. Yay!

Wow... Back when I didn't have my flatscreen TV... :O

Anyway, there are some runs on the speedrun.com page, and I wouldn't mind giving a few hours to a couple runs at some point in the future.
