TIOLET!
Line is still a projectile weapon, whereas pulse is hitscan. When the first line hits the enemy you've already pumped 10-15 shots into it with the pulse rifle, more than enough to blow off 2 limbs. But yeah, this would only work on PC more or less thanks to mouse aim.

Edit: Not to mention that lines move at a ridiculously slow speed, and are more likely to miss enemies that like to dodge or just move around a lot. With hitscan weapons you don't have to wait for the enemies to line up for you.
I am going to do this run on the PC version. Ive been practicing a bit on segments. I am going to work on recording the game and seeing how well I can run it.

I have gone through 4 chapters just using the first gun. I will most likely play this on easy. The first little boss you fight in the command deck of the ship. You can kill him with just knocking him down once if you upgrade your weapons damage to 3. This is a nice time saver as you don't have to waste time knocking him down twice.

The game doesn't have a set framerate. My game fluctuates between 60 and 160, that is with max settings and resolution. So I would most likely record the game at 60 since that is F1.
TIOLET!
I couldn't see anyone mentioning it so I thought I'm just gonna throw it out. Well, there is a way to bypass the freezing of movement during the tutorial screens. Very simple, just press the aim button (must have a weapon) and voila, you can move around again even though you're not supposed to be able to. Should save 1-2 minutes regardless of difficulty setting.
Snuvs, how's it going? I'm interested in watching a run of this game, finished it on the PC myself recently Smiley

The recording is very hard to do. The game doesn't have a set FPS. If I play the game 640X480 V.Sync it runs at 30FPS, but if its 1024X768 then its 75FPS. Now I was recording it at 640X480 30FPS and I could record it just fine at 30FPS, but then at random times the video would start to record at 13-15FPS. This Desyncs the Video and the Sound and makes it impossible to use a segment. I basically have to be lucky that the game doesn't crap all over me when recording so I can actually do it.

Ill attempt a segment or two on Sunday since I don't work then. My basic plan is to get to the first save point which happens after the monsters attack and you. That is just shy of 10 minutes in. My second segment would be to attempt to finish the rest of that mission. I like to save early so I don't have to watch the cutscene every time I attempt the first mission, and I won't have to worry about missing enemies with my gun.

Aha, recording issues Undecided
Have you tried turning V-Sync off?

Anyway, I've made a video of something that could maybe perhaps have potential use (And maybe the location in the video is already a good one).

YouTube link

When you've used Kinesis for a brief moment on an object, you can then push the object around with another object like a bodybag/corpse. Likely also works with a cup or something small Grin

This was recorded on the PC with game version 1.0.0.222 by the way.

EDIT: You know, I just thought about something. I haven't tried it yet but you can probably use Kinesis briefly on some big object that you need to move and then push another object against it to move it forwards faster. I'm talking about bigger objects which have an Kinesis icon on them.

EDIT: Nah, in "Intensive Care" it wouldn't be faster because I just did a "grab and immediately let go" on the crate and it was already out of the way so that I could run past it, hehe Wink
here is a link to some youtube dead space speed run on impossible mode it is pretty good so far apart from some minor mistakes. http://www.youtube.com/user/KOFXIKula
@hillza

Great vids, the guy is really good Smiley

I'm actually playing at Dead Space (I'm at the chapter 3, I'm very slow, LoL. I don't want speedrun it for the first time 8) ).
When I will finish I think make a Clear Game run 8)
TIOLET!
Good? That looked like my first playthrough of the game ever... except that he misses even more shots than I did.

Its a good start for the game, he  an improve yes but it is still good.
TIOLET!
No, a good start would be 100% accuracy no matter what. In a game where good accuracy means better times it should be unacceptable to miss shots in the speedruns submitted to SDA.

I dont think he will submit to SDA as it would not be accepted, but at least it shows people are into speed running this game, do you have any dead space videos? I am going to start uploading soon if i can be bothered to switch my ps3 back to SD.
TIOLET!
No I haven't recorded my playing yet, as I didn't plan on speedrunning this game (or anything else other than finishing up Doom 3 since I'm "retiring"). But TheVoid knows things might change Wink

Hi I'm doing a speedrun of Dead Space on EASY mode. I'm not a speedrun n00b, so please take my videos seriously.
I have just completed Chapter 1. My Total Official time for Chapter 1 is: 17 Minutes, 21 Seconds.

You can watch them here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/aleckermit

Tell me what you think, I will continue to add about 2 parts per week hopefully.

(I am currently re-uploading part 1 and 2, they will be back on youtube shortly if they are unavailable atm)

Looks pretty good, but the sound sounds a bit overpeaked, try to fix that.

The save point after the first Stasis usage is actually the best first save point since it's exactly on the way.
Why didn't you grab some extra stuff at 5:57 (On the left) in part 1? Probably not all too important for an Easy run, but still Smiley (A Small Med Pack and 1.900 credits.)

EDIT:
Part 1:
At 7:49, if you hug the right wall, it's possible to not be stopped.
At 8:41, wouldn't it be better to shoot the battery/power thing? The melee is a bit of a slow animation.
In the tram activation room, you could save 2 bullets by shooting their legs and then stomping them, hehe Wink

Part 2:
At 3:40, you can run past the enemy on the right side.
At 7:05, the dialog that starts playing here won't allow you to leave the elevator to get to the tram/end of chapter until it's finished playing. You could've grabbed a bit of stuff in those boxes before the elevator.

Good stuff you pointed out...

PART 1:

1. I'm not sure why the sound is kinda staticky. It sounded a lot better before I uploaded it to youtube. I am keeping the original high quality videos on my computer, so if they get uploaded to SDA they will sound and look a lot better.

2. At 5:57, you have not weapons, thus no stomp ability, so crates are out of the question at that point. And all lockers are locked. Maybe I missed some supplies that where not in crates or lockers?

3. Stomping enemies is risky, it leaves you open for attacks. Plus I got 18 ammo from both of them anyway ;p

4. Yeah your probably right, I could avoid BOTH necromorphs by hugging the wall at 7:49.

5. You're right, shooting would have been better at 8:41.

PART 2:

1. Running around his right side at 3:40 would save a tiny bit of time, yes.

2. Yeah, I was dissapointed I didn't stop for supplies at 7:05 myself.

I'm going to re-do the first to parts with your comments in mind. Thanks for the help!

If the source files sound good, then it's good Smiley Always keep those source files.

I wasn't talking about those crates. At exactly 5:57 in your part 1 video and then on your left (On the right is a crate) are 2 items against the wall. A Small Med Pack and 1.900 credits (I don't think those items can be random).

Hehe. Well, for those 2 enemies you could quite easily use the stomp, but don't bother with it. It only saves 2 bullets and you won't be getting any ammo issues on Easy Wink

You know, the part after you got out of your ship that has blown up looks ugly. Is there nothing that can be done there? You got hit/stopped 3 times. Maybe try walking on the left side? I should check that part myself a bit.

No problem, and good luck redoing Smiley

Hey guys, I just finished re-doing the first part. I took all of your advice, including using the later save station. I feel this segment is almost absolutely FLAWLESS. It took about 10 tries or so, watching that intro over and over almost made me go insane. The official game time up until the save point after the first stasis use is: 10 minutes 12 seconds.

Fixes:

1. Collected supplies at beginning.

2. Dodged BOTH necromorphs that fall from the ceiling.

3. Overall better speed through doorways.

4. Shot wall switch instead of melee.

5. Passed the necromorph that blocks the doorway after getting plasma cutter VERY FAST by killing him quickly.

6. Saved right after first stasis use.

Mistakes:

1. Hesitated a tiny bit with the door that you have to use stasis on.

2. Picked up stasis re-fill that I didn't need(cost little to no time since save station was on standby).

I WILL UPLOAD THE IMPROVED PARTS 1 and 2 TO YOUTUBE TODAY, SO CHECK BACK AT http://www.youtube.com/user/aleckermit

Thanks TheVoid for your help!

EDIT: Is there a place on the internet that I can upload a high quality video over 10:00 minutes, since my first segment is over 10:00 minutes? I'd like for you guys to watch my run now. If I wait to upload it to youtube, I will have to finish both parts first, since my first segment won't fit in the video time limit on youtube...

EDIT2: Also, the sound is still a bit staticky, even on the original video. It's not that bad, but it's noticeable. I'm using FRAPS and sony vegas pro 8, anybody know how to reduce static with it?

You could try FileFront, but after some time if there's download inactivity, FileFront will delete your files. Maybe try Google Video? I'm not really familiar with that one, so I'm not sure if videos can be longer than 10 minutes there.
You can also check here for a list of some hosting services.

Sad
I think you should try fiddling with your sound options. In the run I'm working on my sound was also a bit overpeaked, and to solve it I needed to go to "Start->Settings->Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Audio tab->Volume button for Sound Recording" and then lower the volume for "What U Hear" which is what Fraps uses. It helped for me Smiley You may need to go to "Options->Properties" to make it viewable/changeable though.

For encoding you could try Anri-chan, or learn how to do it manually Wink

aleckermit: 2008-11-10 02:54:19 pm
Well I'm sure not going to restart my run because of little static... It only seems to be noticeable when Hammond and Kendra are talking to me with their com-links. It won't be near as bad when/if uploaded to SDA. Youtube seems to make it worse.

I will however mess with sound options to try to reduce it from now on...

I've decided to upload the first 10 minutes of my first part to youtube, should be up in about an hour. Part 2 will probably come tomorrow.

EDIT: I found the sound slider you where talking about and lowered it a bit, it was at max. Should help.

EDIT2: The video is uploading now, should be up in about 30 minutes, may take longer for high quality link to appear...
How much longer than 10 minutes are we taliking because the actual time limit for youtube is like 10:59

First part of segment 1 is uploaded to Youtube. It is available in high quality.

Please critique it!

thanks

EDIT: Both parts of chapter 1 will be available in the morning, tomorrow the 11th.

Official total time for chapter 1 is now 17 minutes 9 seconds! Good improvement over my last 17:21.
alecker what kinda settings are you using to record your game. I record everything minimum even the resolution. I record Fraps at half size and 30 FPS. But my game still loves to give me recording spikes and it makes it impossible to record. Now my computer is definably not on the low scale, at least it shouldn't be for 1500.

I'm using FRAPS as well. I record with max settings with AA and AF, full size at 50fps. I get spikes as well but they're pretty few and far between.

Turn v-sync off maybe?
