Hey there, I have a question about rules and I did not find anything about this.

I am currently trying to re-run TimeShift. I am 40% through and I abuse the physics engine.
I noticed that it behaves differently on different computer systems and if you have VSync enabled or disabled.
Having VSync disabled or having a weaker system makes the physics engine more weird, allowing to do tricks like this more easily:

Obviously it is allowed to play with VSync on/off in the first place, but
am I allowed to change this setting between levels, so I can get my optimal physics behaviour in a level?

I don't believe changing the framerate on the fly should be allowed unless there's an ingame option to do that.

But also, I think if you are allowed to "emulate" a weaker system by limiting your max fps using a recording software like Dxtory for example. if you sync your fps to match the video fps you choose for example.

So you either put it at, lets say, 40 fps for the entire run or keep it just controlled by vsync.

Just shooting in the dark here, isn't there a way to lower your fps by doing explosions or other effects in the part you want it to be lower?

Running on console would make it easier to do the trick?

It is possible to change VSync ingame:

With my setup of a 660 ti and a 3770k I get 150-300 fps without VSync, on max settings and while recording with shadowplay on max video settings, I think the fps will stay the same when I cause some more explosions.
Shadowplay also allows me to record with 60fps while playing with higher values.

I don't own a console, but I might as well play it on the computer of a friend where I found out the physics are better there because the system is weaker, that would be the same.

The question now is if I have to record the menu where I change the video settings or if I should re-record all the levels before with VSync off then.

Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
I actually don't think this is a problem if the setting is changed between levels (or between segments) however, the timing for the run may need to include the time spent changing the option if it's Single segment RTA timing. but yeah that depends  on how you are playing the game. E.G Single segment, Segmented, Individual level.

Is it something that could be turned of for the entire run without problem?

@Penta this is basically akin to Item fling in Bioshock (High FPS wanted)

This is a segmented run, like the previous runs for this game. I would have to re-record the previous segments if that would be necessary, this is my only concern now, but it's doable.

I don't quite remember now, but I think some grenade jumps are easier with VSync on and sometimes you get weirdly stuck in the ground or slowed down after some jumps with high fps.

Edit: So it would be okay if I record the changing of VSync ingame?
I see, I'm sorry, I thought you were trying to reduce the FPS by another method different from turning Vsync on/off

If that's the case then, all you need is to change the Vsync config after you start the segment: If you came from a level that Vsync was on and in the next level you need it to be off, you do the menus to turn it off in that specifc segment and then switch it back if you need and so on
Dragon Power Supreme
I asked moooh and he says there's a precedent for that in one of the Tomb Raider games. You can switch FPS between segemtns but the whole segment being ran must stay on the same settings. e.g. if a trick is 60fps, whole segment must be 60fps and not suddenly switched to 150fps.
Playing a complete segment or even level with the same settings is OK with me.

I would only change it between or at the start of a segment regardless.
This is dependent on the answer to my question if I have to include footage of me changing the setting in the menu or not.

I have recorded all previous segments with VSync, let's say I want to record a new segment without it.
Should I
1. (Start recording, disable VSync, do the segment) or
2. (Disable VSync, start recording, do the segment)?

2
Alright, so I can continue normally.

I thank you all for your answers! Smiley
