Hi all,

Back in October I dug out the classic horror FPS Blood in order to get myself into the spirit of the season.

After replying the episodes a few times, I started messing around with speed running the levels and finding as many skips as I could.  I checked the forums here and there was a
Blood 1 & 2 thread made many years ago, but all the video links were dead so I thought a new thread would be helpful.

Below are some recordings I did of practice runs of the first two episodes. The difficulty is set to easiest since anyone who has played before know how ridiculous the damage on the
cultist's hitscan weapons can be. I might try the higher difficulties later once I get the routes down.

If anyone has any questions or ideas for improvement, please let me know. I've also routed out the other episodes, but I haven't recorded videos of them yet.

Episode 1: The Way of All Flesh  http://www.twitch.tv/northern_one/c/1730018
Approx Time - 10 minutes

Level 1:
- Right off the start I boost jump off of the tombstone/zombie to get into the second floor window. This skips having to kill the first cultist for the key and going though the front door of the building.
- I have to kill the cultist in the cremation room for the second key. Since it takes him a second to die from the flare gun, I use the time to grab a life seed health boost from the furnace.

Level 2:
- This level is actually already outdated. Just after recording this run, I found out it is possible to jump boost over the gate to the train platform, which eliminates the need to get any of the other keys and saves over a minute.

Level 3:
- The train level is fairly straight forward. I just run to the last car to grab a key and then work my way back to the start again. I don't think there are any opportunities for skips here.
- Once the engine overheat is triggered, it takes almost a minute before the level ends. I use this time to collect some power-ups and weapons.

Level 4:
- Once past the gates, I boost jump of the zombies to reach the jump boots.
- I have to go through the freak show room to unlock the door to JoJo's arena. I kill the cultists here as the ones with shotguns will knock me off the high rope.
- The key on the high rope is too high to be reached with the jump boots, but I activate them to negate the fall damage coming down.
- After grabbing the last key, I use the boots to jump back to the front gate as it's a bit quicker than running back through the carnival.
- I skip going to the bonus level and head straight for the regular level exit.

Level 5:
- Nothing too special here, mainly just optimizing the route since you have to go back and forth a couple times through the church in order to get the keys.
- The moving plates with the picture of the teeth needs to be activated in order for a gate later in the level to open.

Level 6:
- At the start, I use the jump boots to get onto the wooden bridge. This saves having to jump into the water and come up the other side.
- This level is quite confusing the first time through since some of the door triggers are weird. The main hindrance was determining that picking
up the reflective shot power-up is what triggers several necessary walls to open.
- In the final circular arena, if I press the switches that spin the room to quickly then the wall does not move and I have to wait for the switch to reset.

Level 7:
- Easy boss level. I use the jump boots to get to Ophelia which triggers the boss to appear.
- As soon as he shows up, I use the boots to jump to the secret area to grab the guns akimbo power-up.
- Using the alt fire on the dual-shotguns, I pin the boss against the wall until he dies. If he gets out into the open area, this fight can be really frustrating as he flies around quite fast.

Overall, a fun episode but there are not many opportunities for level breaking skips. This changes quick in the next one though.

Episode 2: Even Death May Die  http://www.twitch.tv/northern_one/c/1731130
Approx Time - 8 Minutes

Level 1:
- I jump into the water and up onto the side of the ship in order to save a little time.
- Working through the ship, I shoot the one barrel early since when I come back to it from the other side, I would be too close to the blast.

Level 2:
- No skips in the lumber mill, just mainly knowing which enemies drop the keys.
- At the second key, it takes a few seconds for the water to raise higher enough to be able to jump out. I try to time jumping when the water is at just the right height.

Level 3:
- Now the fun begins.
- I jump boost of one of the first zombies to get into the little window above the hedge maze. This skips the entire first section of the level and also nets me an
invisibility power-up which makes the entire rest of the level a breeze since enemies won't attack.

Level 4:
- I boost jump off the first zombie again to skip over the hedge maze. This maze is not nearly as long as the one in the previous level though.
- Normally, this is a really long level since you have to collect all six keys which are scattered all over the mansion. But luckily, by using the teleporter
in the secret passage I can skip to the end, which requires only one of the keys to reach the exit.
- I make a slight detour to grab the jump boots pickup. They will come in handy soon.

Level 5:
- A smaller version of the last level but that doesn't matter. I use the jump boots to grab the last key right off the start and head to the exit.

Level 6:
- Another long level with tons of hard jumps... oh wait, I forgot I had the jump boots. I jump up to the room which has the switch that opens the door to the level exit.

Level 7:
- The jump to the bridge near the start of the map cuts this level in half and saves a ton of time, but it is a very hard jump to make and failure means death. A definite run killing skip.

Level 8:
- The spider boss is a complete joke danger-wise, but is a pain to kill quickly.
- I use the jump boots to get into the oddly placed small window which leads right into the boss room.
- I use the napalm cannon since the spiders hit-box is so small it makes hitting her with anything else frustrating. If I can get her stuck into the wall the blasts won't knock her around like they did in
this run.

Overall, episode 2 is probably my favorite since almost all of the levels can be significantly shortened, or skipped past outright using the jump boots.

Blood was always my favorite of the build engine games so this has been fun. By episode 3 & 4 the map makers kind of realized how broken the jump boots were and desgined the levels to prevent their abuse. Luckily, there's still dynamite jumping which leads to some fun skipping shenanigans. Tongue

I'm a big fan of classic FPS games so I really wonder why I never played Blood. Your videos look awesome, I followed you on Twitch and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your runs!

Blood is a fun, fast paced game that really deserved a better sequel than what it got.

It's worth playing as some of the level designs are really good. Unfortunately, I end up going through them too fast to really show them off.

Maybe I'll do a 100% secrets run sometime.
I AM FUCKED ANGRY
yeah Blood 'monolith' was a good game, the build engine was also like 'Shadow Warrior'. Smiley
It is a very long time ago I had play this game, because I can not running old games on my system without emulator. 'twitch.tv' is a problem for me, can you upload the plain files on a hoster ?

So here the videos for blood 1 & 2 (remember, this are not my videos, sharing only for the sda board) ->

Hello Ewil Smiley
Do you know a way I can start this game back on win7 64bit , also blood 2 ? I know there was created a patch for duke 3d and shadow warrior so it runs on winxp and win7, but for Blood I had nothing found.
For youtube, I do not trust this videos.

Mortyre this game was released on gog which has it all set up for dosbox.
You can get it for 6$:
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/one_unit_whole_blood

Also Ewil there is a big difference between single-segment and IL routes since you need to obtain more powerups and can't play as risky a lot of the time to ensure surviving in some of the more hitscan-based areas (granted its probably not quite as necessary on the easiest difficulty).
In the case of e1m1 its to get the secret health which costs 2-3 seconds. (Of course this doesnt mean its not worth checking for ILs to get some more route ideas)
I believe that Northern's videos are only supposed to be a general showcasing of his routes anyways and they are far from the optimization level of an IL (especially since the whole chapter is done in a single segment).

P.S.: Does strafe-running not work in Blood? It's been way too long since I played it :c

P.P.S.: This guy has some pretty good runs : http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL53A3F5210E360341 but they're obviously not very well suited for single segment runs without some alterations
He wouldn't need that many powerups on easiest difficulty if he would have used strafe-running, even in SS.

Hi exo, thanks for the information, but this version is ~300MB big, my original copy is 1.3GB big on 2 cd-roms, with the special bonus disc. hm ?

-
@ewil ->
I had found a way to play Blood 2 The Chosen on Win7, without use Emulator !
(I have the UK version 1.0)

1. Start the Blood 2 Cd-Rom
2. create a folder in your win7/xp system
3. there are 3 folders on the CD-Rom 'DATA - GAME - MOVIES' you copy this 3 folders in the one folder you had create on your system.
4. go in the game folder and run blood2.exe

IT WORKS !!! Smiley

edit: The framerate works also good, perfect. it is not speedup

These videos are interesting.  Most of these tricks I was aware of, but ones like going under the last gate in the Overlook Hotel level were great.

Anyway, yeah, I definitely play it a bit safer while doing a single segment. In IL's you could really abuse dynamite jumping to get around, but it is so easy to kill yourself doing that.
The difficulty level also makes a difference as it effects things like the shotgun cultists ability to throw dynamite and how many enemies spawn in a level, which changes boost jumping opportunities.

I haven't really tested yet to see how much faster jumping and strafe running would be over regular running, but I imagine it would be faster.

Nice.

Do you have the Nightmare Levels expansion for Blood 2?  If you haven't played it before you should try getting it as the levels are fantastically shitty. Cheesy
I AM FUCKED ANGRY
I have not the nightmare levels expansion for blood 2, sorry. Sad But I have the full compilation of blood 1 with the bonus disc.
But I had play blood 1 and 2 very often in the 90's years. I must find a way to start blood 1 on my win 7 system, without emulator, this is important. But strafe jump, it works very good in blood 2. Strafe jump for blood 1, so example for me is duke nukem 3d, but I do not know, I can not remember and the game do not work currently.
Does anyone still run this game? I'm actually looking to start running this and I would like some reference material!
optimism: gone
Very nice. I have been practicing Blood speedruns myself lately, it's also the first game I've ever seriously tried to speedrun. Does anyone still speedrun this game?
If anyone wishes to learn to speedrun this game, watch the videos me and my brother (Khuln) made of each episodes + Post Mortem

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEwfl6ZMXC-8pCz0Qj62xAA/videos

These aren't great run of the episodes (overall time of the video is just over 35 minute), but they showcase the route that me and my brother had planned and all the tricks, both big and small, are shown.

There are also recording of individual levels that had a reroute due to new findings that were found (e3m6 for one was cut from around 1min 40secs to 44 seconds)

Sick routes. Thanks for sharing them Smiley
fast video games
Will have to check these out. the explosive boost in e3m6 is nuts.

Does anyone know if the glitches that are used in duke 3d exist in this? or anything like them?

There are some glitches you can do due to the nature of the build engine (areas can overlap literally) but mostly the tricks are rather blood specific. Same thing with shadow warrior.
Duke3D is REALLY fast movement wise, allowing a ton clipping bugs rather easily.
Hello!

I did some blood running back in 2003-2004. Unfortunately I didn't have any recording equipment back then.
I'm very happy to see that people are speedrunning Blood!
Although I don't have time anymore to practice, I felt that I should finally share my runs/routes.

So I did some quick hacking with DOSBox to enable rerecording, and made EP1 & EP2 videos. EP3 & EP4 will come later if someone else doesn't
manage to record them first. Smiley Due to a bug in Blood, the rerecording causes blood to reset difficulty level, making it very hard for me to play back routes
from muscle memory.
I've included some notes which describe differences between Mister Ripper & Khuln's EP3&EP4 routes and mine. I hope it's enough.

EP1:

EP2:

Some notes about EP3 & EP4:
- In E3M1 (Ghost Town) I fetch the dynamites from the Art Gallery. Although I'm not sure if this is faster route.
- In E3M4 (The Sick Ward) you can clip through the doors in Hospital waiting hall.
- In E3M5 (Spare Parts) you can also clip through the door, which leads to the room with big slope. (Khuln&Ripper EP3 run 4:06) (This is the place where I originally discovered the glitch)
- In E3M6 (Monster Bait) my route is completely different. I go left from the start room to the narrow corridor with water flowing, and head for the tunnel that leads directly to the dam. At the dam I utilize dynamites to reach the top.

In EP4, Khuln&Ripper routes are mostly better than what I had.
- in E4M6 (The Ganglion Depths) you can skip the whole level by clipping through the door in the room after the Spider boss.
- In E4M6 again, it's possible to save little time with a slope glitch. (In Khuln&Ripper 5:15) Just speed up and jump directly to the slope that's sideways in front of you. The engine will lift you up.

Enjoy and keep up the good work! thumbsup
^ There's something I haven't seen before.
Sandbagging
So many new tricks <3
Some cool stuff there hotmultimedia (especially on E1M4, that skip makes me very happy to know)
Also, on my channel. There's a new route done for E1M3, that just gets to the fire key and back to the front again.

- In E3M1, you need 3 dynamite to make those jumps, the gallery only has 2 within a secret as far as I can see. The route in our video is also 3 secs faster from my testing, and allows you to go through E3M2 without needing to suicide to begin with 100 health.
- Interesting on E3M4, although we would like to see if it's possible to skip any of the keys in the level, or at least, escape the fire key 'trap' early
- We do know of the route to the dam in E3M6. Armaaaa was kind enough to tell me about it (in which, I took Khuln about it). With that, I was able to brainstorm this jump

Although, there is a new set up for it, involving 4 remotes to help make it consistent

- Knowing that the door skip is possible for E4M6 as well is great for us. That level always feels like it takes longer when necessary, and any way to cut it down is always great. (Funnily enough, I was wondering if this game had any other 'clips', similar to that found and performed in the other Build engine games runs)

Now if there any way to shorten E1M6 (The Great Temple) or E6M7 (The Dungeon) now

- I'm not quite clear on what you mean with the 'slope glitch' thing.

Also a small time saver for E1M2; after blowing up the first wall at the beginning of the level, if you throw the dynamite on the rightmost side of the 'cracked' wall, it blows it without the TNT barrels going off as well. It allows you to stand in the train, instead of waiting for the other explosions to end.
