Does anyone have any information on what the rules are?

I'm kind of surprised nobody has been working on this.  I'll probably do some runs after SGDQ is over.  I have two other categories to offer.  It's a pretty weird game to make categories for, because of the weird nature of any%, so I just focus on whatever is most fun for me.  I'd probably see this game having four categories:

1. Any% (40 levels, any score)
2. Any% no level skip (88 levels, any score)
3. A++ no encores (88 levels, A++)
4. 100% (112 levels, A++)

To elaborate on the any% category, Mecha Richter discovered that if you just choose "exit level" at any point in the first two levels of any act, the next level will unlock and you won't be awarded a score.  So you don't have to play those levels at all.  You only have to play the 3rd level of each act and then the finale to beat the game.  Obviously this would look really awkward in a NG+ run since everything is already unlocked, so that should probably be a NG category only.

As for the others, I'm unsure what to do about NG vs NG+.  NG+ is really no different for "A++ no encores" or "any% no level skip" except that you start the game with weapons.  For the true 100% category, this makes a significant difference because the encores are already unlocked, saving the trouble of having to re-enter the world after completing the finale, and having to reload your game and running all the way to the world 8 encores after beating the game.  That saves a chunk of time and makes things a lot easier.  In theory, it'd be fine to just use a completed file and play the encores beforehand, but Yoshi's Island plays 100% from a fresh file and has to go back for the extra levels after completing the game, too.  Hard to say what the best option is.

I haven't timed many of my runs because I mostly just do individual level practice/routing, but I did spend one day on "any% no level skip" and managed a 1:56:09.  This was on the XBLA version and is really bad still, so there's no video.  As I mentioned, I'll probably work on this after SGDQ.

More opinions on category would be appreciated.

hey pj thanks for the info ill be sure to add that into the categories and ill try to do more scouting for other rules.
one thing i was wandering is i haven't played the pc version yet but from what i remember once the items are unlocked its unlocked for your entire game and it seams like it would be a pain to have to reset the games save every run so i'm not sure if i'm the only one but i would prefer running ng+ just to have the items (also the items are awesome and allow you to skip some stuff)

so if this is the case to start a run all you would have to do is select story to start a run. if the game save "is" removed then it would also remove hard core mode making it more difficult to do those runs. i know there are already runners out there and i hope to get some feed back from them, cause i don't want to just call the shots but in my opinion ng+ seams like its the way to go.
Hey PJ, could you tweet at me or make a vod on how to do the level skipping? Thanks Smiley
Is PJ
You really just choose "exit level" from the menu when you're in stages 1 or 2 of any act.  It will unlock the next level.  I'd make a VOD but I have A++ on every level already so it wouldn't show the unlocking.
Awesome. As for level skipping, it works on both pc and console right?
Is PJ
Yup!  It works in every version for some reason.

wish i had seen these categories before i started messing around, i thought you had to do 2 of the levels in each act to progress, guess i should work on that any% no skips and any% and not this what i have been doing D:

also what is the rules when it comes to doing secret levels as entering the secrets makes the game think it has finished the level the secret was found in

I am not any official authority on this, but this is my personal opinion:

The any% with level skips should be done on a new file.  Doing it in NG+ doesn't really make sense since every level is already unlocked; entering the first two levels of each and exiting won't really make sense to the viewer, but just skipping to the 3rd level of each act while it's already unlocked seems like an even worse option.  I probably won't run it either way, but I'd recommend starting from a fresh file if it is possible to do so.

For the "any% all levels" or "any% no level skip" or whatever you want to call it, I'd definitely allow using the secret level if you think it'd be faster.  I have no problem with that at all.  The game still gives you a letter grade.  With the level skip, the game doesn't give you any grade at all; it just unlocks the next level.
ok so i figured out how to reset the story progress, just now where does it stand with weapons? do we sell them on the market and flood it or do we just keep them and use as we please?
Is PJ
Oh you can just reset story progress?  That's awesome!  How?

I'd be ok with keeping weapons.  But that's just me.  Perhaps more feedback would be useful.

i used this to reset the save, keeps your total gem count, fame and what looks like the old level progress on the stats screen, but all the weapon uses are reset
Is PJ
So it keeps all your stats but resets your individual level progress?  That is awesome.

well most stats that i can see for now, i haven't done any levels so i dont know how it will handle the gem counts and such once i finish one. will be doing some of that any% stuff later. see if i can get anything decent.

[EDIT] it seems that its just a visual thing where it says your gems are saved in the stats as i just finished a level and it is still the same
so yea first run 1:10:59 D: did some extra levels like an idiot from being used to doing some route i thought was good lol alot to save from deaths and bad play but i guess its a start
I finished off the game on PC for the first time (Completed it on Xbox when it first came out) and then dived into an Any% No Skip run.  Put up a rather paltry 2:45:54, but still, considering it was a very basic run I'm fine with it.  Didn't use any fancy tricks like using exploding paper planes to get past spikes, just used the poison bubble gun to get up some places.  Would love to actually run it properly though Smiley
I was planning on routing the any% this weekend, good to see so many people interested in it.
Would any one else be interested in running Any% No Skip?  I've got it down to 2:29:01 after 2 attempts.  If not, I'll do Any% too.
Is PJ
Yea, I'd run any% no skip probably.  I only worked on it for a day awhile ago to race zimsmlgpro, and ended up with a 1:56:09.  I'll probably work on it more after SGDQ; that and 100% insane.
i have tried a few no skips and down to 1:57:49 or something and that was a terrible runthink i have sum of best of 1:4x or something but hard chokes on the later chapters
so a 1:46:47 with major screw up on c7 losing atleast a min decent run though hope to have more people running this soon Smiley
Is PJ
Nice improvement!
