I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
-----
Battle Kid is, honestly, my first Nes game ever on my first Nes console ever, and, as I haven't bothered with getting a few other highly regarded games for it yet, while I can't compare it on that merit to other games, I had fun playing through it last week.
-----

The game's fluid controls, I believe rather fast pacing for a Nes platforming game and high difficulty probably make it a nice game to Speedrun. A run on the "Unfair" difficulty would be very impressive, as you would have to play through the game without dying, and you usually will die a lot.
I have done & uploaded a speedrun of the Sky Fortress aswell as for the starting area on youtube. Unfortunately, I lack proper recording equipment, but I uploaded them anyway serve more as a visual guide. Even worse, I am playing the game @Pal50hz, and it hurts this game really bad.

SkyFortress en route to the second boss:

This one went pretty well (ignore the owlbot fight). Few notes:

-this kinda proves that getting the Damape Amp.x2 is not worth it to get in an any% run.
-you always loose the windmills speedgain after leaving the screen which they are placed in (see 28,02 -> 29,02)
-25,02: Jump up here to 25,03 for the windmill's appropiate timing
-27,01: You can get yourself killed while jumping to the second ledge if you are too quick.
-32,02: This room can probably be done faster by jumping to the higher ledge right after killing the EyeGuy.
-35,01: Look at Timmy touching the fifth block of the ledge here when activating both Homing Drones; makes timing much easier.
-42,00: Obvious little screwup, reentered the room.

Second boss strategy: Owlbot is really easy if you know how to kill him.

After getting control of Timmy, jump to the upper ledge and jump again towards Owlbot while firing into his eyes.
Land on the left side of the ledge, the only reason being that the shots traveling time is a mere bit shorter, as you could own him from anywhere on the ledge. Make sure you do *not* inch forward as far as possible, or you might get hit by his Rinka-styled attack pattern.
Don't move to the left or the right and the laser attack will remain shooting just right next to you without hitting.
Now just jump upwards while firing shots into his eye. Once owlbot starts spamming his mechanical birds, look out which hatch opens up. You can keep jumping if he opens the lower hatch without danger. If he, however, opens the upper hatch, you'll have to time your jumps to avoid four mechanical birds. They are really easy to avoid though once you've come to learn the timing/pattern.

Starting Area, up to the first boss:

TAS (not done by me) of the same rooms for comparison, probably with many better & doable room solutions:

I doubt there to be any sort of alternative route choices in Battle Kid. As for teleporters, IV should definitaley be activated to get to the last areas quickly. II would probably be a good bet to get to IV, but I don't remember exactly where you are after killing the 6th boss. III should be useful for runs that are planning to get the Damage.Ampx2, otherwise it should be skipped, and I can't find any potential use for I either.

An invincibility bug has been discovered on the first version of the game, 1.000. You can activate it by pausing the exact moment you get an item. Unfortunately, I do not have this version, as I would love to play around with it and how it behaves (can you run through enemies/spikes?)

At first I thought a speedrun utilizing that bug would be really boring, but there are likely to be a few interesting room solutions, route changes and maybe sequence breaks, especially if you consider that both the O2 and feather upgrade may prove to be unnecessary. Combine this with "easy mode" which will be faster due to the doubled attack power, and the bad ending, and you'll get the fastest possible time combined with cool cheapness.

There is a neat little gimmick though that is only present in the 1.100 version: Type in "SGCLEVEL" as a password to access a really easy and timed hallway of rooms. It's a very short and easy-to-pick-up run, and it's easy to master it aswell. My best time is 00:21.81. Anyone up to beating it?  Wink
Thread title:
Hi! I'm andrewg!
I LOVE I Wanna Be The Guy... I mean Battle Kid***

I've actually never played this game, but I really like the looks of it. Also, your running looks very smooth for the most part. I look forward to seeing a completed run! Smiley

Cigar Man
Hey, I received this game today.  The dark-green cartridge is sexy.  The controls are tight, and the character moves quickly.  I managed to get past the first boss, but the game is hard as balls...hard balls.  I hate that the music keeps playing when the game is paused.

Edit: I just beat the third boss.  I think I died almost 100 times before I beat her.
Hi, I'm rezzing this thread b/c I've been playing Battle Kid a ton recently.  I've never run a game at a competitive level before, but this seems like a title that's begging for an impressive run and I'm surprised there hasn't been any submission yet.  Has anyone been playing recently?  It's also a shame that XtraX's videos are no longer up, since the only other comparisons I have are AirRider's videos, which my practices are well ahead of at this point.  I'm also playing on NTSC which makes for a much nicer looking run.

The game's tough, but it has almost no RNG to speak of.  Almost every room is totally pre-scripted, and you can always reset the room by re-entering.  RNG affects the boss patterns, but it will probably be awhile before that has a meaningful effect on times.  If it gets to that point, RNG is solely manipulated by number of shots fired.

The current TAS is done by the super-talented Aglar, and he didn't find any real bugs or sequence breaks, so I'm going forward under the assumption there's no crazy tricks (in version 1.1)

My goal for a submittable run is one or no deaths, low%, which skips the IV key and damage amp.  No videos until I'm done practicing individual sections - I'm rehearsed up to Cleo, the 3rd boss.  I thought she was going to be a nightmare since she takes soo many tries the first time you play through the game, but if you're really aggressive with her you don't have to stay alive too long.  Now it's a really fun fight!
