I've been planning to run this game for some time now and I think it's time to make a thread about it.

I'm planning to make a Any%, segmented, New Game+, Nightmare run.

New Game+ to have all weapons upgraded and max health (Although I'm not planning on getting hit anywhere ;)) so I don't have to do any Teeth harvesting.
Perhaps I'll make a 100% run afterwards, and maybe I'll even try a single-segment sometime although some shortcuts are pretty tricky to do not to mention the invisible platforms sometimes (Not shrinking is the fastest way! ;)).

I've found a couple of sequence breaks and shortcuts, and also some death abuse will be used.

Right now I want to do another playthrough to check the autosaves. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to use each and every autosave, although on the other hand why not? Since they won't cause a save penalty, unless the save spot puts you a little back or something. Some autosaves warp you forwards though so those need to be used at least, and before tricky parts.

Well, that's about it for now. Don't have anything to show yet and won't for some time till I've checked those autosaves. After that I'll probably upload the segments to YouTube I think.
So anyway, I wanted to let you guys know that I'm working on this.

EDIT: The plan has changed. I'm going to do New Game+, Nightmare, Individual Chapter runs.

EDIT: I'm most likely not going to do any runs for this game anymore because I'm annoyed that I somehow can't do the fast Vorpal Blade/Hobby Horse trick correctly Sad So therefore I'm going to make compilation videos of the shortcuts, sequence breaks, and such I've found for this game to help someone else.

A strategy for the final boss:

ive seen some vids of this game on yt, looks very good

i would love to see a run
Is 100% even possible on the PC version?  I remember when I played the game one of the Radula room's would crash the game when you beat it so I had to skip it.

I've 100%'d the game on the PC (In preparation for the run) so yeah it's possible.

Oh, also a funny thing about 100%. I got 100% on the Xbox 360 already when I missed 2 Bottles Smiley So you could say that I could skip 2 Bottles, but I think those should still be included.
this could be very painful, i found the game was pretty annoying most of the time... arent there a lot of those segments where u have to shoot everyone to proceed? good luck anyway Tongue
I think it would make for an entertaining run.  Looks like there could be a lot of shortcuts and death abusing.  Besides some of the areas are quite well designed.

Yes there are quite some places where you need to kill everyone to proceed, but you can also skip quite some battles Wink

One thing I find annoying is pressure pads, and then specifically the camera change (And Alice control) after you've pressed it. I'm sure that stuff will lead to lots of deaths Tongue Jumping on invisible platforms and such while I can't see Alice because of the camera...

EDIT: I just saw this interesting video about the final boss. So I guess I need to get hit afterall :/
Also, how does he shoot the Teapot Cannon so fast? Hmm... He seems to switch to something and back again very quickly, I shall check it out.

EDIT: Seems you can indeed shoot faster with the Teapot Cannon when you fire and then click for a melee attack and then fire the Teapot Cannon again. But I can't get it to fire as fast as that guy does it.

Exoray
Does getting those last two bottles make it 101%? If not and the game still tracks the percentage as 100% without them, then they should not have to be included.

No it won't be 101%, just remains 100%. Yeah I guess they won't have to be included then Smiley
I can see this being very annoying to run simply because of the movement. When I played I always moved around by dodging because it was faster than walking (or that's how it felt). The problem was that it wasn't very maneuverable and I kept bumbing into walls and turning to the wrong directions.

Good luck with the run, I'm interested in watching it.

Yeah the movement will be tricky. It reminds me of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets because the camera in Alice: Madness Returns also seems to turn around at random speeds, sometimes it turns fast, sometimes slow. This is already annoying in the very beginning of the game when I need to get out of the house and through the streets Wink Ah well, I'll try my best but I guess you can expect it to not always be optimized.

Oh and yes, dodging is faster than walking.

EDIT: Hmm, I think the first segment is going to be extremely short... Extremely short as in a few seconds and no gameplay. The reason is because the game autosaves already when you gain control after the cutscenes. And the annoying thing in this game is that when you're in the main menu (Or Profile select screen or even before that when you just need to press Enter) you can't restore your savegame because the game remembers the previous game. So then I would need to quit the game, restore the savegame, and start the game again every time...

Earlier today I just for fun ran through chapter 1 on Nightmare. Well, it was quite full of mistakes Cheesy Got hit here and there due to the Teapot Cannon or Focus not cooperating, and just me playing stupidly (I even died in the last battle of the chapter when the Mad Hatter is opening the gate...). I also did 1 battle which was unnecessary, somehow I just forgot it. And I also died quite a bit while trying to do a sequence break. The movement wasn't really much of a problem, except sometimes after a pressure pad and handles.
But what bothers me most is that the game also very often stuttered :/

The time was about 35 minutes by the way.

EDIT: I ran through chapters 2, 3, and 4 on Nightmare. It's pretty tricky to not get hit in some battles, especially in chapter 3 with the Samurai Wasps because they're swift. And especially the battle just before the third Scroll of Destiny was tricky. I couldn't get past it Cheesy I was low on roses though, 3 or 3.5 roses when I started the battle. But still, having 4 of those shooter wasps around the round platform, 1 Daimyo Wasp, and later on 3 or 4 Samurai Wasps makes the stuff a bit tricky and I kept dying... It's quite an intense battle Smiley
Chapters 2 and 4 weren't too much of a problem.

You can turn mouse smoothing off by editing some .ini. It didn't work for me so I used a 360 pad but it seems to have helped most people. See this.

I've tried it and I'm not really noticing much difference myself. Thanks for the tip though.

Also, ran through chapter 5 on Nightmare, it had a few tricky parts, and then there are some shortcuts which can be a bit troublesome but I'm getting better at those.

EDIT: Oh and there are indeed a lot of battles to be fought. Quite often it's needed to make a vent appear or a bouncing pad... I thought that you could skip quite a lot of battles but apparently not.

EDIT: Hmm... I just ran through chapter 5 on Nightmare while recording (The run was extremely sucky :D). But since I've changed those 2 things in the config files (The game runs at 60 FPS now) I also experienced some weird bugs. I've experienced 2 times that Insidious Ruin were standing in place and did not attack me and could also not be targeted, but they could be killed (And when they died their model didn't disappear immediately). And a DollGirl was acting weird when her heart was exposed. The Teapot Cannon couldn't damage her and I could only attack one of the two bolts on her back with the Pepper Grinder. In other words, I'm going to undo those changes in the config files because I think they're causing this (And I'm not noticing any positive things out of it anyway).

Lately I've been testrunning each chapter individually and that feels like a nice category to do. I've asked mikwuyma about it and he agreed to it, so I'm going to do Individual Chapter runs Smiley

Making a single-segment of the whole game is quite difficult on Nightmare (Though I may still try sometime...), and segmenting the game ends up with quite a lot of short segments, so then I thought about Individual Chapter runs which seems like a nicer thing to do.

EDIT: I just found a quite interesting and useful trick on YouTube:
I just tried it out. Heh, you need to keep mashing key 1 and 3 and just keep attacking for fast attacks Smiley Pretty funny, and useful. Though it would be annoying to dodge away quickly or something because, well, you're busy mashing key 1 and 3 all the time Cheesy
Just tried it against a Menacing Ruin. I guess I need to get the timing right or something because I was switching so fast between the Vorpal Blade and Hobby Horse that barely any attack hit him...
But that guy in the video does it absurdly fast, somehow.

EDIT: The guy told me to bind melee attack to key 2, so that you need to mash key 1, 2, and 3 in order. And yes that indeed works to attack very fast. But I just tried it against a Menacing Ruin again and it didn't really seem/feel very practical to do, once again I was barely hitting him. It's also difficult to move away or something because I'm busy mashing those keys. Need to try it a little more...

There's something I also need to be sure of. I'm using the Story Mode dresses for the chapters. But other dresses and weapons offer certain things like double damage and such. Personally I just want to use the Story Mode dresses since that's the standard stuff. How do you guys think about that?
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
Well Mr. TheVoid, it should be simple in regards of how you can do the run...  As far as I can see, this run can have three different possibilities: New game (self-explanatory), New game + (going into the run with all upgrades), and New game + /w DLC (going into the run with all upgrades, dresses, and weapons)...

Basically because the weapons and dresses that you download can greatly affect the gameplay even more than just the new game +, I would imagine that they would be counted different.

If you wanted to do it with the "story mode dresses" then I say go for it and have it counted as new game +, then if you want to do it again with the DLC weapons and Dresses, do it again for a faster time.

It sucks though that none of the blockbusters in my location doesn't have Alice Madness returns for rent... I so want to play this game, but I can't afford any new games at the moment...

Yeah sounds logical about those categories. I'll just use the Story Mode dresses (And standard weapons) then.

By the way, I also found a pretty cool skip in chapter 2, typical developer oversight Wink But right now I'm focussed on chapter 4, I'm going to run that one first since I like that one the most and it's quite short (About 25 minutes).

EDIT: Heh, I've been attempting chapter 4 and I barely get past the first 2 minutes from a ~25 minute run Smiley And yes Kotti, the movement is indeed messy when doing serious attempts... Also, in the Card Bridge I need to blindly jump on an invisible platform after a pressure pad, not very funny to do and causes lots of deaths as I already mentioned in an earlier post.
Don't have anything to show yet but I'm busy attempting chapter 4 and it's quite a pain Cheesy Movement flaws will definitely be in the run. I did find another shortcut in the Card Bridge though. And there are 3 tricky shortcuts in this chapter which are easy to mess up. Also, that blind jumping I was talking about in the previous post, I'm getting more consistent at it so that's good.

Anyway, I also wanted to say that I'm most likely not going to use the fast Vorpal Blade attack trick. The reason is simply because it's very impractical to do, at least for me it is as I just can't get it down good enough. Whenever I try to kill a Menacing Ruin or Armored Card Guard with it it just doesn't really work and I'm wasting more time than when I would do it normally. Having the attack function on key 2 isn't very convenient for me.
I still haven't captured a good run of chapter 4, it's quite tricky to pull off every shortcut and good fights Smiley
But I wanted to ask something. Since these are Individual Chapter runs the control ends at the end of it. Should I skip the final cutscenes or not?
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
As soon as this game's price drops (or when I get the money or when it comes up for rent) I will be more than happy to see if I can help disect this game with you.  Until then, I guess I can provide supportive backup... Smiley

Anyway, IL Chapter runs, an interesting concept and I wonder why I didn't mention it in my last post.  Really it is up to you, the runner, if you wish to keep the final cutscenes or not.  As per the rules, it states "When the final movement is done" (or something like that).  This means that when you reach the finish line (or kill the final enemy before that cutscene) the timing ends, so if you really want to show the cutscene, go ahead; if not, then just skip it and be done with it.

Again, I wish I could do more but for now, this is the best I can do.  I wish you the best of luck Mr. TheVoid.
I'm still not sure what I want to do with them. If I'll skip them that saves some diskspace/encoding time Wink But on the other hand it's a nice kind of finishing touch for a chapter run if I leave them in.

After some pondering...

Yes I'm going to leave them in.

By the way, did you know that a guy on YouTube has a run of chapter 4 in 46 minutes? My run will be half of that Cheesy
He also has a run of chapter 5 in 59 minutes, that run seemed much better. But I don't know a time estimate for that chapter yet so maybe it, too, sucks balls. That chapter will be pretty tough though.
And chapter 3 will definitely be tough with its shortcuts and Scrolls of Destiny and just generally being the longest of them all.

About disecting the game. I've disected it quite a bit already, found a lot of shortcuts and stuff. I actually doubt there's much left but you never know Wink

Also, fun thing, currently I've got 25000+ Teeth Cheesy And that will become way more with attempting and trick searching. I wonder where the limit will be, 99999?

Oh by the way, anyone else ever noticed that in the very beginning of chapter 3 (When you're in the Vale of Doom and need to fight some enemies right away after spawning), when you turn around there's 1 Teeth in the air way back which is impossible to grab. I've never heard/read anyone ever mentioning anything about that mysterious Teeth...
Hi there. Still nothing to show, but I was thinking about doing something else as well. I was thinking of recording a playthrough with certain rules.

- Basic weapons (Never upgrade them)
- Story Mode dresses
- 100%
- Full cutscenes
- No shortcuts (At least not big ones, some corner cutting and such here and there. Mainly because I want to keep them a surprise for in the actual runs)
- Nightmare difficulty
- Perhaps also no shrinking to reveal platforms and paths

I just wanted to know what you guys think of that Smiley Any suggestions?

Bah, I'm massively annoyed. There's a guy on nicovideo who's busy with a run (New Game, Nightmare) and he does the fast Vorpal Blade/Hobby Horse attack trick very easily. I'm annoyed that I can't do that trick very well, annoyed to the point where I don't feel like making runs for this game anymore Sad
Also, in his latest parts of his run he has this keyboard picture on the right side of the video where you can see which buttons he presses. When he does the fast attack trick he's only mashing key 1, 2, and 3. When I do that I barely move forwards and barely hit the enemy... So I just don't get it. And that trick just ruins the fun of running this game for me.

So I think I'll just go capture all the shortcuts and sequence breaks and put it up on YouTube and move on to some other project...

I've created a compilation video of shortcuts, sequence breaks, and such for chapter 1. Can be found here.

On to chapter 2.

EDIT: Here's chapter 2. I think this chapter has the least amount of shortcuts and such (Besides chapter 6, of course, but you can hardly call that a chapter Wink ).

EDIT: Here's chapter 3. You know, now that I've recorded all these shortcuts and such I came to realize that doing Individual Chapter runs actually wasn't the best idea. To pull off every shortcut in one whole chapter run is nuts Cheesy

EDIT: Here's chapter 4. 1 chapter left to do.
