Pay attention to the little introductory guides if your new to DFO, if your not you can skip them. They are helpful, and should be at least understood. There is no substitution for experience and trial and error. Forewarnings: Each class performs differently, and here is my own summary of each one. Slayer -> (Glamador and I can tag team this one) This is a bread and butter Sword user. There is some magic but most if it is through the sword. Generally close ranged. Becareful as they are slower in their attacks than it might appear, use your range from the sword. This hard with short swords (but they specialize in magic so use more of your Pokes). Fighter -> (Rane's Favorite) There are a lot of little tricks to Fighter. They have the longest "X" combo with 4 hits. Their moves show their short range, with the exception of Nen master moves. Some Brawler are ranged but.. not so many. There is a lot of in and out you need to do with fighter, but no matter the situation, there is a fighter move to use. Priest -> (Yama might have a few tips) Priests are focused in and preform well in almost any situation. They have a balance of everything. Probably the most balanced class for handling what they need to, but are currently a little crappy due to not having the priest patch. This also means they can't awake until that patch comes. The 4th priest class still isn't in Korea so.. i'm sorry. Gunner -> (Yama's favorite) Now these guys are wierd. Play from a fixed range, and close. They use their guns and 'nades for ranged play, but can get dirty with kicks and spikes. Also they can use mechs (see mechanic), but yeah! Good solid class, but can't move while attacking (exception ranger). Mage -> (Glamador seems to know them) Unfortunately, i haven't played a mage past 18. Early game they suck, their melee ability sux. If you "MISS" with your dash attack, you fail prone. You swing slowly, and its hard to capitialize on your swings. So party up and go into dungeons, or its going to be boring. After 18 though, i'm told everything gets a lot better. Tips never devulged during Tutorials: (Does not apply to Gunner) On your first swing you will ALWAYS do the same movement (if its nothing its nothing, if its a slight step its a slight step) but on all other hits the direction you hold determines how much you move. No direction (you will slightly slide forward with momentum) Forward direction (you will push forward farther, this is key for fighters, its their approach 85% of the time) Backwards direction (you will stay PUT). Now beware you can't just hold backwards after the combo, you'll turn around and start swinging, so for a Fighter trying to stay still should do X -> (backwards) X -> (backwards) X -> (backwards) X -> X -> (backwards) x -> etc.... you could insert skills in there but they will generally do something with their description, and will probably move you or your prey. So its omitted. The fastest generation of Style (insert your launcher) -> combo while in air As long as the above is a 5 hit combo, it will generate style like no one's business. If that string is too short, then feel free to attach an attack or two at the front. THEN LET YOUR COMBO RESET! You don't get the style (except from the aerials) until the combo is finished, and the rate at which it increases per hit sucks. to give you an example (might not be 100% accurate but to make a point)... A 5 hit combo will give you roughly 20-25 style points a 100 hit combo will give you roughtly 40-45 style points. meaning in that 100 hit combo, not even counting aerials, you can make well over that. So its better to do lower #'d hit combos for generating Style and higher #'d hit combos for killing. How to successfully generate Technic Since 50% of this is Counters/Back attacks and 50% is Overkill, this isn't the easiest thing to do at all; Easiest way is to be in a party and gang up on an enemy from both sides. You'll get back attacks (which count for counters) and generate 50% pretty quick but this isn't always possible. So be patient and develop a method to either intercept an enemy hit (easy to do early in Grand Flores) or just pressure and pray (more likely the solution). But pay attention a lot of enemies have obvious tells. That is your tick for technic How to overkill: You need to do more than 30% of an opponets max HP when you deal the final blow (doesn't matter if he has the HP for it or not). This can be very hard on any difficulty of dungeon above experts. So the trick is to lower their hp; then hit them with your big damaging attack. Multiple hit attacks do not work well for this purpose. So be vigilant and try to save them, but if you are suffering, just go ahead and crack it out anyway. 30% can be very hard to tell especially with enemies with multiple bars. So the best is to get them down very low then go with the attack you think will overkill. Plain and simple. - Rane's Tips: 1. No matter what happens, DONT LOSE YOUR COOL. You will make soo many stupid mistakes. 2. If you feel like the game has cheated you, it might just have. a. There are still some problems in its netcode, there are enemies that don't normally attack in certain ways during party play. (Vestible has Sliding armors, and teleporting ones. This is LAG INDUCED. You just got robbed, i'm sorry) b. If you thought something would hit and it didn't, i'm sorry but thats the game. Thats why hit rate weapons/equipment are expensive. Missing costs you dearly. c. If you just got comboed by the enemies to death, it happens. At least you weren't mounted for your FULL HP by Sewer Princess Farah right? (Please note: Normal mount {brawler skill} only allows for 7 hits, her's doesn't have a max limit....) 3. Be careful on who you party with, there are leachers and people who will not try hard at all then complain. If they die early in a dungeon for no good reason, walk from the party or kick them (depending on its composed) There are better players out there, and unless its 4:30am, should be easier to find a better party than suffer. 4. Stay alive! Well while this might be obvious... there are certain quests that require items, when dead. You aren't eligible for those items. So that horn you need from the boss, thats right! you gotta be a live for it. This makes a big difference in when people might coin in parties. So pay attention. 5. Sometimes the best action you can do is to stand still. There are enemies that bounce when you hit them. Put them into a corner and then stand still wailing on them with your basic combo. This should stop them from doing anything. (See Naias' or other summons) 6. If your move has a grab, it will say there is a GRAB DECISION. Not all enemies are grabbable (exception with grapplers who get a move to counter this fact...) so experiment early. If one type of enemy isn't grabbable, I wouldnt' suggest doing it on its stronger cousin you just met. 7. If an enemy has super armor you have a few options. A. Grab it to kill it, B. Tank through it (not suggested), C. Hit him from the otherside (Technic baby), or D. Avoid and reapproach. Don't be silly, super armor is strong in brawlers. It makes a world of difference in how much pain you might feel. 8. If you are in a party and its your first time on a boss... ask for tips seriously. Sometimes they are really easy (lol Goblin thrower), but other ones are just a pain in the ass... (See any GBL boss, ask Yama and I for horror stories). 9. Use your coins! I don't mean blow through them, but you get 3 back a day. They are a RESOURCE, so use them. Just limit yourself to when you need em. Just cause you have em, doesn't mean use em. 10. Plan your skills. Aradsociety (search it) has a skill planner. This is invaluable for any character. Its 25$ (to Nexon) to reset your character. So plan out your build. If you aren't sure what you want, cause you haven't played it, then ask on forums (nexon's, or there is dfosource.com) they are there to help you. People will help with your skill build. 11. Don't complain if you suck PvE if your a PvP build, or visa versa. DFO runs off both ends, and it is very easy to see what could happen. I have PvE and PvP characters, i dont get made when my blade master (PvP) fails hard, but I break shit when my Grappler (PvE) can't do anything in PvE. (PvE -> Player vs Environment;;;; PvP -> obvious) ----------------------------- So you wanna play some DFO? Well thats good, but here are some general newbie tips for you. 1. When you start playing, take a look at the characters and get a feel for what you want to play. There are some guides and people you can talk to. I (RaneofSoTN) am a resident fighter expert.. so no problems here. 2. When you play; the game really tries to hold your hand, its ok sorta, but it is not really well written. It reminds you of good things, but it doesn't tell you how to quest... There are two dungeons in the beginner server. Those are Lorien and Lorien Forest. There is just a single Epic quest in Lorien.... There are 3(!) quests. One is the epic, and two more from Linus grab all 3. When you go into Lorien forest, fight until you clear one (a little "!" will show on the bottom of your screen), this is for the goblins. The other two will complete on finish of the dungeon. You are now ready to leave the beginner server.... 3. Okay now to explain the servers. On DFO there are two sides, EAST and WEST, these are only a suggestion... since everythign is P2P. So its all about connectivity... So then why are there servers? Well each one has a specific name. Beginner is for the LORIEN area. Then there are Grand Flores, Sky Tower, and Behemoth (there are more.. but thats for a higher leveled character) When you attack a dungeon, you get bonus exp for being on its server. So any dungeon in Grand Flores will grant you bonus EXP while you are on the grand flores Channel. So how do you know which is which? Well your map (ya know that 'n' button?), shows the dungeon area names at each of the exits. Just match that with the server and you are ok. Some of them don't align well. Ophelia Post is cool, but what is the Coast? and such? Just join the channel and it should tell you the dungeon that matches. 4. Ok wow that was a lot, but there is more to come. Did you notice the 3 markers and the rank when you did your first two dungeons? THey didn't matter but they will from now on. Style - This is basically how well you are comboing; It maxes out at 85% (actually 100% but the last 15% is tricky). 53% of it is your combo count (anything over 5 counts) and the last 32% is aerials. It is averaged over the dungeon so it will drop from the first few rooms then steady out. Keep it high! 85% no less Technique - Technique is basically how well you are controlling the monsters. 53% is comprised of Back Attack and Counters (only about 30% counters i think), the last 47% is all overkill. you can max this at 100% if you know what you are doing. Overkill is when the last hit deals over 30% of their max hp. This works even if they have a sliver left. Hits - Obviously hits is how many times you got hit. This is reset on COIN usage. This trick is helpful for completing GSD quests (more on later) Rank - This is a big ol' ratio of the above 3. Style and Tech add up points, and hits reduces them. Hits reduces in a ratio for HOW MANY ROOMS YOU CLEARED. So you can take more hits and maintain your rank provided you do more rooms (but you run the risk etc... but you'll figure it out); Ranks are SSS, SS, S, A, B, C, D, E, F. you get 5% bonus at A and it goes up from there at SSS its like a 40% bonus! but thats a low hit high %'s Also, your rank determines if you get the next difficulty of the dungeon. Some requests require a specific difficulty (or higher). To get experts, merely clear the dungeon once. To get Masters, clear the dungeon on experts with a "B" rank or better. To get Kings, clear the dungeon on Masters with a "S" rank or better. If you know your basics, S should be easy to do. 5. Now now now your almost ready to quest in Grand Flores... there are an archetype of 5 quests you should do no matter what for each dungeon (well the first ~11). They are dubbed the "basics" they get numbered 1-11. They are.... G.S.D. , Kiri's Challenge, Bets, Speedy Like the Wind, and Monster Hunting tips. They will grant you mad EXP so they will be done. Also make sure you have whatever epics for the place you go. FOCUS on the DUNGEON YOU ARE ATTACKING. Don't over load on something you aren't doing. (Don't take Mirkwood Hollow quests, if your going to plain old Mirkwood). You can only hold 10 quests at a time, repeatables are not desirable... they don't give exp. And they can generally get the item without them. you can turn them in later. Only one that is an exception i believe is the Dragon hearts there are 8 quests in the first dungeon; and this is about a GOOD avg for more; Thunderland and Grakgarak have more. but you'll see... The most important aspect about quest hunting is... on 'n' people will show you what quests they have above their head, and also the level of the quest. Each level allow you to guess what dungeon it goes to. use this to your advantage. 6. You are now ready for Mirkwood in Grand Flores (Took a while didn't it? It gets faster from here...), So go saddle up and rock it. You should get at least a C rank, 50% Style, 35% Tech (i think maybe 40%), A few hits (5-6 still under GSD). You might not get the bet; that is ok. If you failed any of hte above... GSD -> dont get hit as much/coin at the boss low health and kill him. Style -> Unequip your weapon and just combo more... this might not apply to mages.... Technique -> Wait for your strikes or get them from behind.... Rank -> do all of the above or whatever you were lacking. Bet -> redo the dungeon now that you have an idea of the layout. Run to the boss and destroy. that should help... 7. So now your done with mirkwood; what now?... Well move on, and continue. But wait, pay attention to that blue bar at the bottom middle of your screen... Its your fatigue bar Fatigue bar is an important aspect to DFO, its your limiting time per character. Each character's is individual, and it is your 'clock'. You lose 1fp per room you do. So going out of the way means you can do less rooms, which means less dungeons but you generally can get more exp or a bigger bonus... this is a mixed blessing. Take a look at the dungeon you wish to run, and seriously think about what is optimal, there are such people on DFO who will boss rush, those who do a Full clear (FC), and those who do it efficiently. Do what suites you.... 8. Your also probably higher than level 5 by now... you can get more Skills! YAY! get them; try them all... you wont have a chance to reset without a cost past your class change. So sample your base skills now while you can. get a Feel for what you want to play. Trainers: Slayer -> GSD; Mage -> Sharan; Fighter -> Pungjin; Gunner -> kiri; Priest -> Grandis. Also... There are some generic skills, those are bought from Seria. This is helpful; Quick Rebound, Backstep and Backstep cancel are usually staples for everyone... (maybe not some mages/gunners...) ------------------------------- Note: Below I mark the Ep # for epic quests. I hope you know how to read. Click on the quest and read what the goal is. If its talk to someone, go ahead and do that. Advance the epic until it gets to the dungeon noted for the EPIC quest. Feel free (since this is a document) to mark what you've done on here, by erasing or such. Just keep a copy of the original. Note: Epic quests are important and generally will give you the gear you will want to use! DONT IGNORE THEM "W" is the key for EPIC QUESTS. They can be taken anywhere, even in dungeon, just don't forget about them!
