Large skip glitches run

Verifier Responses

Quote:
The run is very smooth and uses just about every shortcut known along with providing a good improvement over the last run. The only things not used are the extended sprint and grab cancel, which would save a few seconds combined over the whole run (if that). Mistakes are rare and only about half a second each at most. I saw no video or audio problems (or cheating/inconsistencies). So it's an easy "accept" for me.

TR Last Revelation verify of Ewil’s third speedrun, through Part 22.

Angkor Wat

I would prefer a bit more contrast.

0:52 Avoids a pull-up with a nice little jump trick (new).
1:35 Invents a different version of a swim corner bug for a shortcut.
2:12 During this monkey swing, Von Croy usually catches up because he does it a little faster, but here Lara is so far ahead we don’t see him.
3:05  Good roll into the crawlspace (faster than crawling).
5:17 A forward roll might advance Lara a little before the door is fully raised.

It looks like as many instructional speeches from Von Croy are skipped as possible. Lara appears to sprint as much as she can.

Race for the Iris

Nothing new here. Lara sprints as much as she can, takes the “secret” shortcut at 0:59, and the bug shortcut at 1:22. Then over half the level is taken with the unavoidable cutscene.

Tomb of Seth

Lara takes enough flares for later levels. Here at 0:57 we see the first use of the new flare-wall bug, allowing Ewil to skip actions to raise the level of sand in the room.

At several points Lara appears to be standing around doing nothing, but she’s waiting for the guide to be influenced into doing various actions by her position.

2:17 I believe a running jump at the doorway would allow Lara to land several feet farther along before the flyby.
3:06 Nice jump for a minimal path.
3:40  Precise jumping. The edges of the squares must be avoided.

The usual high degree of sprinting.

Burial Chambers

0:33 The first case of advanced look triggering. This takes a lot of skill; if the aim is slightly off, a different, time-wasting cutscene can be triggered. Finding the best location to attempt the bug is also an ordeal; doing it closer makes it easier, but it takes longer to get there.
1:55 Lara is so fast she makes the mummy look like a revolving door!
2:18 A flare-wall bug allows Lara to go straight to the last room of the level, and leave without needing to fill it with sand. This lets her skip most of the level.

I’m going to stop mentioning sprinting unless it’s special somehow or overlooked.

Valley of the Kings

Ewil opens the level by using the manual rapid-fire pistol technique to kill the assassins with Uzi-like swiftness. I believe he discovered this method. He gets the last guy in the area with the usual vehicle-of-death; if Lara is on a vehicle, an enemy dies if he touches it (true since TR2).

KV5

No improvement. Probably at an acme of perfection, until some radical new bug is discovered.

Temple of Karnak I

Saves a little time by jumping to the highest part of the entrance wall. Faster killing of the two scorpions (their deaths are needed to allow the trigger bug that ends the level).

The Great Hypostyle Hall I

ALT (advanced look triggering) ends the level way early. Careful aiming is needed for this one, too.

Sacred Lake I

0:23 Ewil discovered this nice swim bug to get over the wall quickly.
2:50 Nice side-jump to avoid a pull-up.

Good economy of movement underwater. It’s normal to get hung up on some corners inside the tunnels.

Temple of Karnak II

The runner displays an admirable (and time-saving) contempt for the crocodiles.

Nice movement through the passages. Ewil shows awareness of where he’s going next, so he can minimize path length. Note how as he crawls to an edge, he begins turning before he reaches it, to shorten the time to turn around so he can back off the edge.

The Great Hypostyle Hall II

1:24 Note how he jumps backward with roll, to start in the right direction as fast as possible; this is typical.
2:07 He takes a damaging fall because it’s faster, and he still has sufficient health on the bar at upper left to finish the level without using a medipack. (Starting a new level restores full health.)
2:27 He pulls up at just the right moment. Too early, and Lara slides off the small pyramid; too late, and you waste time getting to the Sun Disk.

Sacred Lake II

1:05 A flare-wall bug skips a bunch of monkey swinging.
1:24 The jump avoids a 2-second pull-up.

Tomb of Semerkhet

0:29 A flare-wall bug avoids a monkey swing.
1:31 This crawl corner bug skips a lengthy game of senet (old trick).
1:57 This ALT (advanced look triggering) skips about half the level, and is near the
distance limit (24 squares).

Guardian of Semerkhet

0:13 No pause at the two circular blade traps.
1:19 Rolls into the crawlspace.
2:56 Lara is stuck between the bull and the doorframe for a couple of seconds, but this may be inevitable.

Lara baits the bull into hitting the door and two targets quickly and saves time, but loses much health. Fortunately, she doesn’t need a medipack before the end of the level.

3:32 Flare-wall bug skips the ladder climb.

Desert Railroad

When Lara curve-jumps off the edge of a car and back on, she is avoiding an enemy trigger.

0:52 This precise jump is very difficult on the fly.
0:57 It’s possible to skip this 10-second helicopter cutscene, but it’s quite difficult and takes almost 10 seconds.
1:54 From the sound, Lara apparently gets one of the enemies to kill himself!

The runner is so smooth and fast that several times he simply runs by enemies.

Alexandria

0:12 The shotgun quickly dispatches two scorpions. They must be dead for the following bug to work.
0:18 A shelf corner bug mysteriously sends Lara directly to the office.

Coastal Ruins

0:14 Lara skips the Egyptian Adventure entirely!
0:53 This flare-wall bug and the subsequent angled jump avoid the trigger for a long flyby.
1:13 This is part of a remarkable ballet of timed events. The player must drop a burning flare at the right moment, so it burns out just after ALT is performed, or else an unwanted event is triggered. This was found to be possible only after extensive research by several people.

Temple of Poseidon

The previous ALT enters the “back door” of the level, and is followed in only 9 seconds by another ALT to Lost Library! This skips the usual back-and-forth trips between Coastal Ruins and Catacombs; the latter level is skipped completely. This brilliant shortcut is possible only because the ALT at the end of Coastal Ruins was engineered into existence.

Lost Library

The known trigger bug near the exit door already bypassed most of the level; this has been improved here with an ALT to cut off another 35 seconds. It’s very easy to be ignited by the flaming wraiths, so the ALT was performed skillfully.

0:36 Flare-wall bug reaches the Pharos Pillar faster than before.

Hall of Demetrius

The flare-wall bug and ALT by the Pharos Knot is faster than the old trigger bug.

Coastal Ruins – Temple of Isis

0:17 A flare-wall bug gets you up fast.
0:29 Nice jump to the shallows so another running jump is possible.

Cleopatra’s Palaces

0:09 A jump-by bug skips a flyby movie.

A remarkable ALT skips most of the level. This seems to be at the distance limit; the 2 seconds of blackness seem to be necessary.

Quote:
The second part of my verification comments on Ewil's 3rd Tomb Raider:Last Revelation speedrun, Parts 23 through the end.

City of the Dead

0:25 Could have parked closer to the wall, to avoid being shot up during the dismount.
0:32 Lara gets the Grenade Gun here because it’s the fastest place to get an explosive weapon.
0:50 Lara doesn’t wait till the autoguns are blown up, because she has sufficient health to withstand some extra hits.

Chambers of Tulun

Since there is no longer anything that needs to be done in this level it has been reduced to a hiccup.

Trenches

Lara kills all 3 soldiers in the level so she can do an ALT directly to Citadel Gate!

Citadel Gate

The ALT from the last level makes the cycle automatically appear here. This is the only location where the game’s error-checking is so lax. This lets you skip the entire Street Bazaar level and the second visit to Trenches.

The player manages to avoid bumping walls till he’s beyond the dragon, which is not easy. The rest of the level is a cutscene. Ewil’s time is slower than the previous run because in the older one he didn’t have to mount the cycle.

Citadel

This level is chock full o’ unskippable cutscenes; at least they’re entertaining.

2:42 A flare-wall bug gives a faster way to the switch. He could have done a better job of avoiding gunshots; perhaps then he could have skipped using that small medipack.
3:14 Ewil uses the movable object glitch twice, allowing him to move three pylons at once, and then a pair at the same time. The pause-and-crouch at three pylons is needed to “enslave” them temporarily.
7:15 Lara is waiting around because she must draw the crusaders to her, so their sword swings will break the wooden barrier.

Sphinx Complex I

Ewil is going to end the level with ALT, so he must leave no enemies active.

0:09 He efficiently removes two enemies with one grenade.
0:31 He saves time by not waiting to see the result of a second grenade.
0:43 A jump over a corner of the sphinx’s paw skips triggering two assassins.
0:55 It might be faster to go around the rear end of the sphinx, using the flare-slope bug, but this bug was not known when Ewil made his run.
1:07 Accurate jumping takes the runner swiftly over the pits.
1:33 He gets behind the shelves without moving them, then shoots both gratings in one shot.

He ends the level with ALT to Underneath the Sphinx, avoiding the hole-digging cutscene.

Underneath the Sphinx

You may be wondering why Ewil picked up the Shovel Handle and Shovel Blade in the previous level, since he doesn’t use the shovel. But there’s a weird bug – in this level, if you combine them, they become the Stone of Maat! Naturally the game designers never expected anyone to arrive in this level with the shovel, so they re-used the same slot in the item tables for one of the Stones. Ewil obviously decided that picking up the handle & blade was faster than getting the Stone  in this level.

Menkaure’s Pyramid

0:56 A jump-by bug prevents the appearance of a giant scorpion outside.
1:01 This crawl corner bug lets Lara take a shorter path to the base of the pyramid.
1:54 Ewil must get the Revolver to shoot the star in the next level. The other choice is the crossbow with explosive arrows, but they take longer to get.

Inside Menkaure’s Pyramid

0:28 Nicely stingy use of ropes. No sliding down. On the single rope, no backswing. On the double ropes, after one backswing on the first rope he jumps directly to the other side.
2:37 Ewil sprints right through the waist-high blade since the damage is relatively low.
2:56 He turns while pushing the button.
3:13 He drops a damaging distance to go faster and because he has health to spare.
4:27 Since Ewil’s run, the door bypass bug has been discovered, which allows one to bug by this closed door. This will let future runners skip the 22-second round trip to the chain-pull which opens this door.

Sphinx Complex II

A hard ALT from the covered pit (which normally Lara shovels out in Sphinx Complex I) takes Lara immediately to the next level. I’ve never been able to perform it, but others have.

The Mastabas

This level is severely truncated, because a way has been found to do without the 4 star-shaped Shaft Keys (more later). So the only thing you need on this level is the Small Waterskin.

0:30 A grenade kills 2 jackals and blows 2 jewels in Lions’ mouths. Then one more destroys 2 mummies.
1:01 A flare-wall bug puts Lara on the roof, where a jump shortcuts to the next tunnel.
1:30 ALT triggers the end of level square.

The Great Pyramid

0:17 A flare-wall bug puts Lara on the roof.
0:32 Lara embeds in the edge of space with a flare-wall bug, allowing ALT to target the end of level square, skipping most of the level.

Khufu’s Queens Pyramids

0:14 The runner takes a shortcut across the pyramid.
0:33 He skips entering the maze under the small pyramid because he doesn’t need the Shaft Key that’s there.

Inside the Great Pyramid

0:21 After killing the two active enemies in the level, the runner embeds in the wall and triggers the end of level square with ALT. This is why the Shaft Keys were superfluous.

Temple of Horus I

Ewil appears to form the water amounts in the most efficient way possible, including re-using the 3 liters left from Puzzle #2 to start Puzzle #3. He performs each last combining just as he pours it onto the scale, so he doesn’t have go into Inventory an extra time.

He drops through the spike-holes, trading medipacks for speed.

2:04 Instead of climbing down the shaft, he drops into the room midway and then jumps down the hole, for a faster entry. This causes extra damage, but it's cured when Seth appears.
3:22 Now we see why Ewil could skip picking up the 5 pieces of the Armor of Horus. Normally you can’t leave a level unless you get all pieces of armor, but ALT lets you depart anyway. But surprisingly when you install the 4 Holy Scriptures (the small statues), the cutscene showing Lara placing the Armor on the statue of Horus still plays!

Temple of Horus II

0:11 We begin the level with a spectacular edge bug to the ceiling (this is an old trick). The jump to the ledge must be accurately performed. The easy way to initiate the bug is to stand on the corner of the ledge and drop to catch the edge, but Ewil speeds things up by several seconds by doing a quick release and recatch. He drops out of monkey swinging as soon as he possibly can, and angles the next two jumps to shorten the path.

1:23 Climbing a little higher starts a cutscene that shows Lara closing the shaft and sealing it with the Amulet. But by climbing out the side of the shaft, Ewil saves 12 seconds; unfortunately this leaves Seth free to escape and wreak havoc upon the world. Oh, well…

Ewil passes the fearsome sliding blocks without pause, and soon ends the level and the game.

The whole game has been characterized by Ewil’s smooth, economical movement throughout, and his utilization of all shortcuts known at the time. A great deal of strategic planning also helped. This all has allowed him to reduce the total time from his previous run by slightly more than one-third.

Decision: Accept

Reason: The planning was great and the execution was too!

Congratulations to Aleš 'Ewil' Horák!

No it was MMAN, who first mentioned it afaik.

I was never able to get past it without getting stuck. It doesn't matter since you have to wait for the bull anyway.

It's parked exactly as I wanted it to be in order to quickly mount the bike on the way to the next level.

Anyway, thanks to verifiers for accepting my best run yet !

This run really deserves applause. Watching it compared to the previous run compared to the run before that shows the fantastic amount of effort put into the details as well as showcasing the runners phenomenal abilities. What makes this even more of a classic is the excellent quality of the video as well as the care put into the formatting of each segment. Truly exemplary of how to do a speed run in all aspects.

PS Finally! Someone ran Chambers of Tulun fast enough to squash that darned bug!
