Hello fellow speedrunners, I'm interested in doing a 100% segmented run of Super Mario Sunshine. Though I'm a beginner in speedrunning and I'll need any help I can get, I also have some questions about the segmented run... How do I know how to segment the whole run? Do I just make 1 segment for 1 shine sprite? I'm pretty much starting everything so I have no route/blue coins strategies/tricks so anything you can say will help me alot!
Thread title:
You should watch Thiradell's run on Youtube, which nearly got accepted. If clean up what he planned you'll have a successful run.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
Link to said run:

Thanks, but, won't he be mad I just use his stuff?
train kept rollin
If he is thats not your problem. He shouldnt be speedruns get improved on using methods from previous runs all the time.
His run should be an excellent starting point, only a few segments held it back from being accepted iirc. I would recommend watching all of his run, and taking note of things he did that gave you pause, either because you didn't know they were possible of because they seemed a little slow. Any improvements that you can possibly make to the route you should make, but a large part of this run will just be spot-on execution.

Good luck Smiley Running such a beloved game is a huge challenge, but I hope you finish it. I would love to see this on the site!

Yes I know it's not an easy run, but I'll try my best and update whenever I get a segment done. Thanks for the help.  Smiley

(EDIT) I was watching his run and watched the whole 14th part and wondered why it was so long? Does it have to be that long? Seems like a real big challenge to get all that perfectly.
It can be however you want it, it's your run, as long as everything is done and it looks good.
How ever did that run not get accepted. *sigh* *mean glare at GTA*

You've got quite the challenge ahead of you, OP. From what I recall, they were all full-world segments, at a simply amazing level of play. I'll be following this. Smiley

The big one was the roller coaster, so that is going to have to be good.
I still don't know about Pinna Park, it's probably the hardest world of the game with mecha bowser and mission 8. I'll have to see if it's slower to cut in the middle of it or do it in one segment and make some slight mistakes. I've looked the thread about the guy's try, some "judge" was telling him to remove the memory card and put it back to save some time, I was wondering if taking out and putting back the memory card while the game is playing can kill the data?

Don't worry about this. No one will penalize you if you don't do this. It was a really dumb suggestion, feel free to ignore it.

Not unless the game is actively writing data to the memory card, no; in other words whenever the game specifically tells you "don't remove the memory card". Otherwise it should be perfectly fine. I'd say do it if it saves time but it's ultimately up to you, the runner.

Here's a video I made a while back with strategies for the voids (the areas where FLUDD is taken from you):

Thanks alot Manocheese, they're definitely going to help me!
In case anyone cares, I don't have any capture card, so I won't be recording the run before some time, though I started to practice some secret levels, it is very hard to get them spot on, I've only started practicing the 2 in Bianco Hills and, for the first one, the hardest part is starting right and not hit the last moving block by doing the "summersault dive", I usually end up too slow and fall when I have to land on the blocks. The rest is cake though. For the second one, the beginning is pretty easy, the hardest part is definitely the moving platforms at the end, I'm usually a tad too late on the second red platform. I'm still not done watching Thiradell's run but, I'm very impressed, his run is actually pretty good. I'll have to work hard to get this done well to get accepted. That's all I had to say right now.  Smiley
This is more of a question than anything else, I was wondering since I saw that you can't use VCRs now for SRs, but, can I record with a VCR, record the VCR run on a DVD and then put it on my computer?
That would be no better off than recording straight to VCR.
If the rule was originally to ensure better quality, then this is definitive no.
For everyone's best interests, a DVD recorder is highly recommended.

The rule was made because nate was sick of encoding from VCR's since his equipment could break and costs a lot to fix for something he gets zero cash from. Feel free to encode from a VCR, but yeah, digital capture is preferred, but not required with self-encoding.
The problem with recording with a DVD is that if you record for like 2 hours without any good footage you just lost this 2 hours since you can't record over the used 2 hours. So it's alot of wasted DVDs.

Eh? I use a dvd recorded and have recorded over many a dvd. I think the problem is that you are using DVD -R's, as opposed to DVD +RW's. The -R's require less work on the front end, and are a little cheaper, but once you initialize a +RW you can erase and re-record titles freely. I suggest upgrading Smiley

This might clear some things up if you need more technical info (you have to scroll down a bit): http://www.proactionmedia.com/dvd_media_formats.htm
I know all these questions shouldn't be here but, let's say a DVD has 2 hours of space, my run is segmented, do I record a segment, then after it is good, I record the other one after this one? It's gonna take multiple disks. Also, is there a way to make these DVD-RWs play on your computer? In case I want to show a segment to people to see if it's good?
How you do it is up to you. You might want to consider recording all your attempts and pick the one with the lowest time in 100 attempts, for example (if it's heavily luck based).
Of course you can view it on your computer. Just put it in your DVD reader.
Now, those streams will probably be DVD streams, but should still be able to rip them off the discs onto your hard drive if they're good so you can overwrite them.
Well after the help of the multiple persons higher, I bought some DVDs and gave it a try, it was a bit complicated at first to get how to work with the DVD player but it's alright now.

Here is Segment 1
And Segment 2

I think they are very good, I do make some mistakes but they don't really slow down my time. Plus I think that solid performances of the rest made up for them. Though I'm new and I'll see what you guys think.
Looks very good. I watched/commented and I'm diggin this so far. I hope you can keep up this quality of play in the longer segments, I think that was ultimately the downfall of Thiradell's run despite how well-planned it might have been. Try not to fall into the same trap, this needs to go up on the site!
