Sir VG: 2010-06-12 02:09:08 pm
Fucking Weeaboo
I've gotten to play a few levels of this, and it's just as runnable as the original.  One interesting touch is that a timer appears in the lower right corner after you clear a level showing how fast you cleared a level in minutes:seconds.hundredths.  For those segmenting, after each star is autosaves, so remember that if you're attempting it (the save file is easily copyable though, so no worries).

Controls are very intuitive, even for Yoshi.  For the most part, it's just like the original.  For Yoshi, it's point and B button to use the tongue.  Z+A to jump off of him.  And you can do it after a jump with Yoshi, so that should create for some interesting shortcuts, me thinks.

I'm not too far in, but that's the initial thoughts.  We'll see what this game brings to the table and if it's worth that 10 score on IGN.  So far, it's not too bad.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: Star Times on the KB!
Thread title:
SDA Apprentice -- (3-1)
There was also a 9.7 by gametrailers and many more 9-10 ratings for this game...  That shows that nintendo has not only succeeded in making a sequel, but for the game to receive almost near perfect scores is mind blowing...  Can't wait to rent it when it comes out...

As for the speed run itself, I'm going to be honest to say that I'm not that interested in it yet...  It's not that because the game isn't going to be out for another two days, but just the idea everyone is still waiting for the SMG1 speed run...  The controls haven't changed much from what can be done with mario and luigi so the same exploits can probably be done here...

Do I want to see a SMG2 run in the future?  Of course, but I really want there to be a SMG1 speed run before someone attempts a SMG2 run...
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Ratchet and Clank 3's run was put up before the original game's, I think. Is there any SMG1 in the pipes yet, or are people still trying to cut their times?

Personally, I don't really care either way which game gets put up first, but I think it's still a bit early for anyone to do a speedrun of this game yet. Also, I didn't know SMG2 had autosave. That's a nice addition, though it seems a bit odd considering the other games almost always had a manual save...Then again, as long as you can copy the safe file...

It would be nice if both games had Individual Level tables, each star is like a level in and of itself. which is nice.I wonder if there will be a carryover save bonus from the first game?

yoshifan is working on the SMG1 run right now, and his progress looks amazing.

Well, except for the noted lack of progress Sad  But thanks!  (I'll have more time in about 3 weeks, upon which I'll take some time to enjoy SMG2 and then continue on SMG1; can't wait to put out the first 6-star segment.)

By the way, please don't make me feel like I'm holding up progress in SMG2 because of SMG1.  By all means, charge full speed ahead!

Lord_VG: does SMG2 save times for every star, or almost every star?  If so, that sounds pretty awesome.

I will look into that, then. I've been thinking of picking up 1 again before 2 comes out. Not sure if I'll be willing to finish it, though...Those speedrun comets and purple coins are brutal.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
one thing i noticed is that you can't abuse the spin move underwater to go fast like in SMG1. that means slow underwater travel everywhere and shells are the only way to get some speed.

most of the backflip-spin-wall-jump-spin maneuvers to cut areas are intact though so there's plenty of opportunities for crazy routes.

The game is displaying times after every star, but as for saving them into some kind of log, I don't know.  I'm only 2 stars in.

Dear Mario,

Please come watching the shooting stars with me.  I HAVE CAKE!

Signed,
Peach

Seriously, shouldn't Mario have learned by now that cake means "HELP ME I IZ IN TROUBLE!"  The cake is ALWAYS a damn lie!
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
Mario actually thinks about another kind of "cake". that's why he always falls for it.
also, he had a taste of it at the end of SM64 so it must be damn good if he's willing to go though all of Bowser's crap.
Cigar Man
Lord_VG, how do you have the game already?
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
he's got special "contacts" probably.

btw, i've played for 6 hours and reached world 5 and have 42 stars. i'll beat it tomorrow since i'm tired atm.

Yes, it does. Highlight the star after you've collected it in the star selection menu of any level, and it displays the time info in the bottom right.

Japanese contacts, I bet? =P (envy)

It was apparently leaked early.  Just like SMG was leaked about 2 weeks early because somebody figured out that the demo disc wasn't really a demo.

(Never wonder how people are playing games early.  People are playing Sonic 4 Episode 1 already and it's not due for release until JULY.)

Right, haxxorz. I'll keep my mouth shut, then. ;P
trepidation
Yep, someone was already streaming the English version on justin.tv more than a day ago (he sucked). I'm a little jealous.

I can't wait to begin look look for breaks in this game. It seems you guys found all of them in the first game before I had even finished my first playthrough.
I'll admit to having pirated this because I just couldn't wait for my Amazon and Walmart preorders to arrive (I ended up with two orders because I didn't think Amazon would price-match Walmart's) I'm Platinum on Club Nintendo.

Spin-Dig: You can backflip + spin to reach one of the high platforms without using the drill.

Yoshi jump + flutterkick + dismount Yoshi + spin = incredible height. Add a wall kick and spin and you can skip the final dash in Hightail Falls. You can also grab one of the silver stars in Starshine Beach without the balloon (though not the one atop the tower)

Cloud Mario tip: with long jumps + backflips, you need far fewer moves than the number of cloud flowers may suggest.

This game doesn't appear to be nearly as sequence-break friendly as the first, though you never know at this early stage. I'll continue to keep my eyes peeled.
In Fluffy Bluff Galaxy (world 1), you can jump from the top right corner of the cloud with the hungry luma on it using the cloud powerup, over to an area near the end.

This saves around a minute however you miss out the comet coin.  Smiley
O_o
I've been playing this game a little. The generated timer makes this game much more enjoyable to speed run than the first game. Instead of talking about what I've done, I rendered some videos. They're not perfect, but it's fun to play.

02:07.16 - Flip-Flopping in Flipsville

00:46.30 - Think Before You Shake

I hope you enjoy these. More are planned, but I don't know which stars I'll be doing. Wink
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
just beat the game.
you need 70 stars to enter the last stage in world 6. SMG2's runs are guaranteed to be longer then SMG1 unless there's some hidden shortcut or the fastest stars are considerably faster than SMG1's.

also, you unlock world S when you beat the game and looks like you need almost all stars to reach the last levels (the last visible stage requires 110 stars so i'd bet there's 120 in total like in all previous 3D marios)

what i haven't figured out is the trigger for the prankster comets. i think some opened when i just picked a star and didn't get the comet medal.

It's just like Galaxy - 240 stars.  Whether there's a #241 much like SMG, I don't know.
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
heh good to know.

also, i just noticed the game sends you a message to the wii messageboard with the clear time. i got 9:54:36 and it must be playtime without cutscenes or idle time since the game's log is above 11 hours.
at least SS speed runs will be far easier to gauge (that is, if the timer is acurrate)
Yoshi Infinite Hover by MASTERLINKX

This is potentially very useful!

There are 242 stars per the official guide.
Fucking Weeaboo
Some people think it's a glitch - it really isn't.  It's a play on the flutter principle that has existed since SMW2.  I think anyways.
i'm going to pick this game up soon hopefully.  Looks great!  I love the fact that the game keeps track of IL times ...
