RTA Wiki SMRPG page - check here for details about Japanese players who run the game.

The Japanese version is ~8:42.75 faster. Check this page for full details. To convert from SDA (U) timing to approximate RTA / Nico (J) timing, add 4:05 to the time. Thanks to Krystal and 0xwas. (note: this is slightly outdated, will update eventually)

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Hey romscout!

Sounds pretty cool to me. I never played through this game entirely, but what I have played of it is pretty cool. I know if there was a run, I'd definitely watch at least a few bits of it. I don't know too much about the planning of a route for this game, but I am curious as to how fast it could be beaten on console.

Anyhow, good luck on this if you decide to commit to a run.  Smiley

EDIT: Oh you say you have committed to the run for sure. Cool.  8)
There's a word for that
Hey cool, I was wondering when someone would try to improve this. The segments so far are all look great, so I hope the rest of your plan turns out as well as these. This is the last Mario RPG game that really needs improving, so it'll be nice to have them all done fairly close together like they have been Smiley

I don't have any questions at the moment, so I'll wait and see if I remember anything relevant >_>
Interest? In one of the most beloved games from the SNES era? Surely, you jest.
Well, not every version can do the mack glitch, so it might be impossible for you to do it.

As far as I'm aware of, there's only 2 versions - the US and the Japanese version.  And I doubt he's playing the Japanese one and I know it works on the US one, so unless there's some undocumented v1.1 release...

Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
The glitch should be able to be pulled off on console. It's been awhile since I last saw the glitch performed, but I believe it was mentioned it's possible (though probably hard?). Since I don't think that particular segment will be very long, trying to get that glitch to work would be a very good idea.

Edit: Also, I'd definitely watch the SS live stream. But it would be nice to see the old run beat regardless :p. It's been up for too long.

I have a little present for you all.

After this I think I'm going to start using slots 2-4 because like, I never want to have to do that again. Ever.

In case there are any SMRPG buffs out there who wanna be more involved in the run, I'm gonna type up the full plan for the run segment by segment so there can be some input for tweaks or ideas. The reason I didn't do it for the first 4 segments is because what I did here should pretty much be universally accepted as super fast and sensible (although there could be slightly better execution on moving through the areas, admittedly).

^ EDIT: I started typing the stuff out but it's just tedious having to re-look up all the stats and money and stuff for what I already had planned out, so I'll let people give input if they want (such as contributing the AI table, thanks) and I'll ask for it if there is a problem.

As for those who show support for watching the live SS attempt sessions, thanks a bunch and look forward to that starting up within the next couple of weeks.
"and possibly a SS any% depending on interest." Oh, you have my full support on it, beings that I've been interested in doing an SS run myself (personal goal, not for SDA)

I'll definitely be checking out the stream
[+--oo] In control since '86
Very nice segment you posted.  I'll certainly be checking in here since I think this game is great.  This is still the only RGP I've ever picked up and beaten the game within 24 hours.

I'd love to see a SS run, too.  Live?  Interesting.  Hope there's still going to be a recording of it, too.  Hope you get the Mack skip perfected for your own sanity!
You might be interested in this page on enemy AI.  It documents all the hacked scripts, which may help you plan your battles.

For example, it is not random which button Bowyer locks during battle -- this is 100% in your control, based on the actions you take.  Also, if you were hoping to keep restarting fights with Yaridovich until he doesn't open with Water Blast, you're out of luck: he always starts with that move.

Yea, the thing about Bowyer and Yarid are pretty easy to know just from playing the game enough over the years (and testing before the run). Thanks for the link, but I also have a friend who made a SMRPG ROM hack called "SMRPG Remix" which is pretty extensive, and whenever I have an issue with a boss I need him to look up, he goes and looks through the game's code and tells me pretty much everything about the battle. So I'm covered there.

Still typing out the full plan and will probably have it up tomorrow for viewing. Been working a lot the last couple days and playing a couple other old classics when I'm home (a side effect of having my SNES out). Will resume the run next week at latest, so there can be chances for input before then.

^EDIT: decided to just resume the run instead of having to re-look up everything I had already planned so I could finish typing it out. Will ask for help if there's any problems, or you can give input at your will.

it got shmupped

as in, i've been playing too much of my shmup collection (and adding to it) lately to continue, and also i had a friend visiting this whole last week so i didnt even touch the game

but there's no really frustrating segments coming up for a while, so i can pick it up and get going again really easily soon... and i promise if there's no update soon, it'll get done at latest by the time i 1cc deathsmiles :p

Yea coincidentally I was subscribed to your YouTube and watching that before you even made this post lol

Good stuff, will probably be able to pick up a few things from it, thanks.

Okay so I haven't updated the run in forever but I'm pulling out the SNES tonight (need to give DeathSmiles a rest, ya know?) and getting back into it. Had my shmup fix and stuff. :3 So I promised my buddy Lenophis (we're like retarded brothers) I'd have the next segment done by Saturday, so expect it by then.

Also about the SS run streaming, apparently capture cards in general aren't compatible with x64 so I need to partition a drive and put x86 XP on it before that's a possibility. Thanks for your patience.

That post was a lot longer than I first thought it'd be.
I had an idea of the SS stream running. Since I saw you plan on being at MAGfest, why don't you do it for the marathon?
that Metroidvania guy
well it took long enough, but here's segment 5

youtube changed their hq deal so i guess if you want hq just hit the button now cuz i dont think the url change quite does it the same anymore. i'm a little iffy about keeping this segment just because of the midas river waterfall, but the rest went perfect and it's nothing devastating by any means so i think it's a keeper. what do you think?

we're at 00:25:25 through this segment, which is as good a pace as i expected BEFORE i added the mack skip into the plan... it's exactly 10 minutes ahead of the old sda run at this point, but i really shouldn't bother comparing to that anymore cuz that thing's in the dust at this point

segment 6 is going to be looooong, but except it sometime this week

actually, mike and i already discussed this a bit and that seems to be the plan

however, since i'd be trying to do it all in one take, there's a few things i'd want to do differently than i would in a normal SS attempt... examples being that i wouldn't want to rely on doing 100 jumps on belome II (if anyone can consistently get 100 jumps in a row please show me so you can be my new god), so my route for that run will have to go through culex's quartz charm for the super unfair stat boosts

i also wouldnt want to have a major risk of death at any point, so i would have to do a mini-grind before croco like the old SDA run does in order to hit level 3 at that point

already working on solutions for streaming the actual ss run attempts, but yea expect a good, fun run at magfest

Wish i had heard of this speedrun sooner, but I guess segment 5 is soon! Impressive work so far, I hope I get to see the SS stream...

A 'real' SS would be an awesome treat too Cheesy

Alright cool, that'd be awesome. I will absolutely be watching that.
On the Super Jumps yeah, that would be way too hard to get in one try... my brother can hit it about 1 in 3 tries somehow, I've never broken 25.

Edit: The segment looks great, the only errors I could see was one little error going into one of the last pipes and trying to hit the last coin on the waterfall. Other than that it seems pretty much perfect unless I'm missing something. Your ability to time perfect time Belome's attacks is impressive.

Yea I'll get around to redoing segment 5 at some point because there were actually more than just a few errors... also there's not enough luck manipulation to worry about, so 99% of that segment's totally in my control. Will improve it this week sometime.

Today I decided to do a SS test run ("MAGfest style", meaning with a little extra caution) where I didn't go out of my way to fight Culex. All I learned from this was that I seriously need to brush up on the end of the game (seriously wasted a good 5 minutes on a Dr. Topper part cuz I was rushing through it too much without reading well when I shouldn't need to "read" at all when speeding) and that I do in fact need to beat Culex if I'm not going to get the Super Suit cuz the stats aren't quite broken enough to finish the game with all out offense. I needed to put Toadstool w/ Lazy Shell armor + Safety Ring for security to trudge through the final parts of the game without worries.

The good news is that I did get the Attack Scarf (got 35 jumps on Belome) and have a very solid plan up until Valentina. Ended up fighting her at about 2:50 or maybe it was closer to 3:00 but still it was less than 3 hours in so it was going really well especially considering I took a bathroom break somewhere in there and had a disasterpiece in Forest Maze getting 5 frog coins off the Wigglers. The bad news is that everything after Valentina was very haphazard and the final time ended up being slightly more than 5 hours. That's okay though, it'll come down when I get in the groove with the later part of the game again and adjust the route to get the Quartz Charm off Culex.

Considering this was my first time ever beating the game in one sitting without saving, I don't think it went too bad. Next I'll have a test run that goes through Culex and handles item management better. Could probably stand for some more Geno, too (the Toadstool thing was just an idea I had an decided to run with it for this run).
Can I ask why you're going through Culex?

This. At the low level you end up by speed running you need the extra stats to beat all of the bosses in World 7 quickly.
welcome to the machine
If you can beat Culex how do you need extra stats?
Quote from VorpalEdge:

I'm thinking the way Romscout is seeing it is that it will be difficult to beat Culex and take a while to get through him, but it will be difficult and take a while to get through several other bosses as well. But by sacrificing the time to beat Culex he saves more time on the rest of the game. I think that's what he's getting at, I haven't attempted to speed run this to verify that though.
