that Metroidvania guy
Hey everyone! Lindsey King (LLK/Jazaaboo) has done a lot of great artwork for TSG and SDA marathons over the years (she's literally done stuff for EVERY SINGLE official SDA marathon) but unfortunately has had some major health problems recently that have put her in a very sticky situation. I could summarize it all myself but it'd probably just be easier for you to read about it directly from her giveforward page:

http://www.giveforward.com/charityartistswampedwithmedicalbills

So for all the hard work she has done for us over the years, I think she deserves a little help in return. The TSG community was initially planning an event to raise money for her, but plans kinda fell apart and now some of us here at SDA feel like we should finish the job anyway. Having mentioned TSG, there are some people from there who volunteered to do some games who might still be joining in on this, so don't be alarmed by any "new people" you don't recognize being added onto the list. That probably just means a TSG person got added after approval.

This marathon will be starting in a mere nine days, lasting from October 26th through the 28th. Exact start and end times will be determined by availability of runners and how many games are being played. Why such short notice? One reason is simply to place the event at the same date as originally planned, and the other possibly more important reason is to make sure it won't conflict with another SDA/SRL community marathon coming up (the #smw marathon, for the uninformed).

Here's the current list of games/runners for this event:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aj2eKeMxVzzzdExqcWZnS3c5M1Y0UnZsd3RqQ2pPMEE#gid=0

As of this post being made, there are currently about 36 hours filled, and at minimum I was thinking 50 hours would be good. Could go up to 72 hours or even more if people are available on Monday.

The way this will work is that everyone can use their own Twitch account but will be streaming to one channel with an access code. A couple people said that the SDA marathon channel was not a good idea since this is not an official marathon, so the next best option is to use a partner's channel so we don't have to worry about stream quality options for each runner (for once, Aftermath's stream may finally be seen properly by someone with a supercomputer) and can run ads for extra revenue for the fund. I am willing to use my channel and sacrifice this ad revenue, but if another partner who has more followers/gets more viewers (meaning pretty much any partner) is willing to lend access to their channel to several people temporarily and donate the ad revenue, then by all means speak up. Your channel would be a much better fit than mine, I assure you.

So if you are okay with the cause and want to volunteer a game, keep these things in mind:

1. While "speedrun" is in the marathon title, you don't necessarily need to be doing a full blown run that you constantly practice for. It can be a game that fits the theme that you haven't touched in a long while (see: Breakdown doing Ghostbusters) as long as you can competently complete it in a reasonable time. In some cases, it doesn't even necessarily need to be a traditional speed running game (see: me playing DeathSmiles), but I doubt that will be much of an issue.

2. My definition of a "scary" or "spooky" game is VERY liberal. Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, and even Illusion of Gaia are on the list; you could definitely make an argument for any of those to not be included. As for the Sonic 3 & Knuckles co-op? Well, that literally has no defense for being on the list other than it being the best run ever.

3. I need an estimate even if you are just casually playing a game. If you don't have one, play through the game again with a timer and use that. I also need your availability on the dates of the 26th-28th so I can effectively schedule you. I want to make the schedule this weekend if possible so that you have a full week to be ready. Also, if we get overloaded for whatever reason, then priority will be given to actual speed runs over casual playthroughs in 99% of cases (the only exception coming to mind being if it's something co-op since we don't have a lot of that).

If you don't agree with the cause, don't bother posting about it and starting a debate. The people who have already volunteered/signed up have read the details and made up their mind, and arguing about it isn't going to accomplish anything. You can simply leave and choose not to support this marathon.

For those of you who want to support but don't have a game you want to play or can't stream, there will be a banner finished shortly and some helpful promo stuff. Just advertise the event in any way you can (twitter/facebook/youtube/etc.)! Even if you don't want to donate, you can come by just to have fun!

I think commentary will more or less be left to the discretion of the runner. So if you want a skype call, go for it. If not, hey, whatever. Some guidelines for commentary and other stuff (IRC channel we're using to communicate/etc.) will be posted in the next few days, likely after the banner is ready. If you have prizes you want to offer up, make sure to mention that as well.  Thanks to everyone who has already signed up and shown an interest, and thanks in advance to the rest of you who are joining in!

Questions on this:

1. Would we be streaming to our own channel or via one set channel?
2. Could people still volunteer at this point?
I want off the ride....

At the moment, we would be jacking romscout's stream to allow use of AD revenue. Unless someone else changes the plan

2. Could people still volunteer at this point?
Yeah the schedule hasn't been set yet, so we'd like to get more of a feel of if we can pad out the rest of the time with some stuff of value... We probably won't be so discriminating

The Speedrunning Teacher
I can do a Ghostbusters: The Video Game run on Xbox 360. I teach, so during the day on Friday and Monday won't work for me, plus I'm doing a 5K Zombie Run Saturday morning. So the only available times for me would be in the late afternoon & evening on any of those days (I'd prefer not to stream on Sunday, but I will make an exception if needs be, since this is very much last minute).

As for an estimate...I'll play through it in the next couple of days (maybe even stream it) to get a time, but I would expect somewhere in the 4-6 hour range, depending on if people want to see cutscenes (after all, the story was written by the same Ghostbusters movie writers/actors). It may be more of a casual run than a speed run, but I can work on the speed part of it.

Alternatively (or additionally, your pick), I could also do Decap Attack. I think my last run clocked in somewhere in the 30s, but you could bump it up to 45 minutes for an estimate.

Lord Of The Beards
i could do Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver which would be around 2 hours 45 minutes, D (Run took about 55 minutes), Or you can make me ruin my childhood with Toki... (also needs a timed run and will be on normal)
I could do one or more Penumbra games (Overture, Black Plague, Requiem), they should take less than 30 minutes per game.

Speedrunner
Since its the only game i play.

Ninja Gaiden. Maybe put it somewhere around 1 PM saturday, So we can combine our weekly races with this?
Im sure Arctic Eagle, Sinister and Duckfist wouldnt have a problem with this since we're doing this every week.

Edit; Strike that. Missed the "Spooktacular". But we/me can do it if it can fit.
Arrested for felony abuse of emotes
dxtr, I think Ninja Gaiden is "spookier" than S3&K. >>

Then again, some of the jumps in both games make me gasp. Roll Eyes

Don't know what to speedrun :(
I could go either Muramasa or Gears of War. I suppose Gears is the "scarier" one but Muramasa is a more family friendly game. Either way you are looking at 2 - 2.5 hours. Feel free to decline if neither game is appropriate for this cause. I would be available any time in the window.
DS Dictator
Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light.

Time estimate: 1 hour
Time schedule: Saturday Evening ~ 8pm UK time, 3 or 4pm schedule time, couldn't tell if it's 4 or 5 hours apart.

Note to UK gamers: Sunday 28th October will be the last Sunday of October so we get 1 extra hour on that day (1 hour back after 1am).

I'll have to look up my massive library to see if there is any other games has the spooky factor, preferably 1 hour at the most.
Zelda Phantom Hourglass for example has a Ghost Ship and the Temple of the Ocean King but a speed run will be ~4 hours.

Sandopolis >.>

I'd love to participate in this but I don't think I have anything that fits the theme. :/

edit: Just for the hell of it, if you consider Sonic 06/Generations/4, Okami, or Zelda: Skyward Sword to be spooky/scary then I'm down for it. I'm only available on the 26th though, going out of town on the 27th :/
Formerly known as Skullboy
I have yet to decide on a capture card but I will certainly be watching what I can of this live. Good luck. LLK has done great work for TSG and SDA.

I could probably do glitched run of Super Mario Bros. 2, but it's only scary in a Inception kind of way.

I will ask Team Ludendi and come back to you!

Edit: Zelda 2 is scary, right?^^ Also, would you accept a hack for this marathon?

I could probably do Bart Vs. The World aswell, the last stage is scary enough, but I only got that one on PAL so Sad
I can do Metroid Prime if you consider that scary/spooky. Any% would be around 1:30 (1:40 if you want to include set-up, I guess).
HELLO!
Need a Super Mario World All Ghost House Exits run. Smiley
Magical. Flying. Bathtub
If you're still looking for more runs I can run Batman: Arkham City.  Estimated time for the any% or any% NG+run is about 1 hour 50mins, more if you want side missions like Catwoman (25 mins), Riddler (25 mins) or Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC (25 mins).  I can also do Arkham Asylum any% which should take about 2:30.  I think they fit the halloween theme pretty nicely Smiley

The 26th is my birthday (yay me) and I've got the day off work so I can be free in the morning (My time zone is BST) but in the late afternoon/early evening I'll be out celebrating, and I'm out all day on the 27th.  28th should be fine though.
The TrUest of Shades
I'd offer up Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (Just to add more resident evil games), it should be at max 1:30. And i will get my availability for those days later today (heading to working right now)
Is this my time to shine? *shrug* If I were to offer to play Ys Origin for this, would there even be any interest in it? I would be doing Yunica, Very Easy 100% for the sake of lowest time. Just an idea, this isn't my official "let me in the lineup" post. Tongue
Infinite Combo
I could try to be a part of this, depending on where I can stream that is at the time obv. I've Been thinking of doing Kaze no Klonoa (PSX) any% but I'll get back to you guys about that.
I could do a run of Rockman EXILE. It is a hack of Mega Man 2, but it is scary hard with tons of terrifying jumps ^^ I would probably be available anytime, except during american night tinme.
sda loyalist
Apparently Emily volunteered me to play Quake. I might play Quake.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I was going to offer Resident Evil 1/2, but since Carcinogen has already volunteered to do those, I'll bow out of that. The best game I can think of is Rayman if you want some, as the back of the game case calls it, "Psychodelic" gaming for all you little freaks out there.

Game time is about 1:45ish so 1:55 Would probably be a good estimate. Also, I can do as a little bonus(maybe with some donations) the Land of the Livid Dead level from Rayman: Origins, That would add another 5 minutes to the total.

Not 100% sure about my schedule, but if it's on the weekend, I should be free anytime after 10 PM CST and On Sunday I should be free after 4 PM CST.
Terraffirmative!
I know you already got me up for musya but I was just thinking, I could also do double dragon neon, that has a skeleton for a boss and zombies and skeletons in stage 9! Not too worried about it either way, I would probably estimate 1:00-1:10 for that because of potential bad drop luck.

On a more serious note, I might also be willing to consider doing dead nation if you'd want that in, but I'll have to play through it a bit more to get a plan/time down.
that Metroidvania guy
Make sure to give me your availability when you are volunteering a game. Most of you did that, but at least zastbat and Kotti need to update me.

Sir VG: As I said in the OP, you can be on your own twitch account but will be given an access key to the channel so you can stream on it for that weekend. Also, I'm going to be filling in games all week, and even if we're at 72+ hours I will make the schedule work as long as the availability of runners matches up that long. So yea, you're welcome to volunteer a game but just make sure to tell me when you can do it. I'm guessing DXC is one of the games you're thinking of?

Zyre: Ghostbusters 360 would probably be good, just make sure to play it this weekend and give me a completely accurate estimate and then I can add it. I'll put Decap Attack on right now and can probably avoid putting you on Sunday easily, so no worries there.

zastbat: I can give you both of the spooky games but need your availability.

Kotti: Same story, need availability. I'm not sure if it would be better to have a bid between those games or just do all of them, but I'll just list it as Penumbra for now. I'm not incredibly familiar with the games, so I don't know how far under a half hour most of these are. Did you mean to just make the estimate 30 minutes for each?

dxtr: Ninja Gaiden has demons and crap, I'll count it (also the NES Ninja Gaiden games are just plain awesome). I would allow NG2 by duckfist and sinister or NG3 by UA if they offered them. I'm sure the usual Saturday race can be set up around the same time and work, but someone with good internet (meaning not me) would need to be able to capture all the streams and restream them. So as long as someone can step up to do that, the race shouldn't be an issue.

Youkai: sounds good, I'll add both onto the list.

Greenalink: I'm assuming you mean that you are available for all of Saturday night after that time, right?

Paraxade: I'm not going to add you just yet because of your limited availability/lack of estimates, but I think out of the games you mentioned, Okami might be the best fit (I do love watching the Sanics though >.> ). Got an estimate for that, and will you be able to stream with microphone or at least stream a skype call's sound if not?

Svenne: I wasn't really thinking about adding hacks. I guess I'd count Zelda 2. I need your availability and an estimate though before I can add it.

Miles: Metroid Prime actually has a pretty creepy aura about it IMO. Will you be able to stream with microphone or at least stream a skype call's sound? I ask this only because you usually only have game sound when I watch you. Also, need availability.

RoboSparkle: hm, for now I'm going to put it as a bid war between any% of Arkham City and Arkham Asylum. If you think there'd be a better way to go about trying to raise money for those games, let me know. You will likely be playing on Sunday (28th).

TrUShade: ok cool, just make sure to play the game again by this weekend with a timer to confirm your estimate is correct.

Jinny: hmm, I'll brainstorm with you on Skype about a potential game.

Rygert: Sorry, not really going for hacks.

Spikevegeta: We can talk to Carc about setting up a race on one of the RE's like you mentioned before. Just bug me on Skype later.

Murph: I wouldn't want you having to work too hard at picking up a new game in a week, but Neon can probably work.

Ok, so we're at like 56 hours now. Still some time left to fill, but we'll need to see how everyone's availability matches up. I might end up making a cut on some of the games if conflicts arise, sorry. However, I'm not going to start scheduling until a lot more people's availability becomes known. I plan on doing it like Saturday or Sunday. Since the interest is so high, I'll move forward and make a thread with further info regarding the stream setup/hijacking, irc channel, etc. either tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah heh, I didn't list estimates because I didn't think you'd be interested in those games. My AGDQ estimate for Okami is 2:40, though that's slightly high. And yeah, I can stream with commentary. I've never streamed a skype call so I'm not sure how that works, but I can use Xsplit so I'm sure it can be worked out.
