I'm checking out this game. It's still on the planning stage, but I have some questions I hope to get answered before getting too serious about it.

First of all, with the search function I found that someone, a guest named "Claes-Göran Nydahl" (sounds like a fellow Swede  :)), posted a while ago with the time 22.23 (from "power-on to power-off") in his signature. Does anyone know anything about this run ? Is he still around ?

Second of all, I would like to hear if anyone has an opinion on what would be the most interesting (default) setting for this game ? I can come up with following categories :
- Normal/Expert (at most 10 seconds of difference)
- Grenade glitch on the bosses or not (by firing off a grenade (smart-bomb) upon entering the boss room, you can instant-kill 4 out of the 6 regular bosses since they will take a hit before the energy is filled up) (maybe a minute of difference ?)
- No-death/death abuse (have not really found any use for death abusing, but more planning could potentially reveal benefits like getting the energy refilled somewhere)

Any combination of these would work, but time wise I think they're pretty close, so I'm not sure how interesting it would be to end up with a pile of rather similar runs, instead of concentrating on one category. Personally, I'd prefer no-death, expert w. grenade glitch. However, feel free to share your thoughts on the subject.

I've watched the tas etc, but any tips not readily available on the net are welcome.

I'm progressing very slowly with this run. I have mapped out the route on emu, decided which enemies to go after etc. Today I managed twice to get quite deep into level 4 (I do the levels in order) on a speedrun pace. So far, the level 3 boss seems to be the most random place, otherwise everything plays out pretty much the same. Because you downgrade all upgrades one step for each death, practicing the later levels fully equiped on a console is somewhat annoying. I have also started to strongly dislike games which depend a lot on pressing diagonally on the d-pad (still this is a pretty cool game worth spending some time on). Overall, I'm in no hurry though, so hopefully this run will eventually happen.

25.47 (player control) with one death (cost almost exactly 2 min). Without the death, I should be able to rub off another 20-30 s, so a target time of 23.30 (remember, this is pal) seems to be what a successful run would end up with. I have no clue how the 22.23 "power on to power off" (see above) could be achieved. Ntsc ? I now use the route 1-6-5-4-3-2 for a couple of different reasons. Run breaker #1 (by large) are the moving platform section in level 4. It really shouldn't be that hard, so once I pin that area down, I hope to be able to start getting a steady stream of completed no-death runs.

Talk to the Hand
This was one of many runs I started and quickly aborted. Heh.

I agree with Expert/No Deaths/Use Grenade Glitch. Honestly, I have no major feelings about Novice versus Expert, but I'd really want to see No Death, and I like the idea of using the Grenade Glitch to go for the fastest time possible.
Ok, good to see that I'm aligned with at least one person.  Smiley

In expert, you get shorter time to complete the levels (obviously of no importance in a speedrun) and you get knocked back if taking a hit on the ground (some enemies and projectiles can be jumped through though, which is something that will have to be used quite a lot). From what I have seen, enemies, items, damage taken etc are identical between normal and expert. So the main difference in a speedrun on expert is that execution errors will stick out more (and hence make it more interesting).

Just out of curiosity and if you don't mind me asking, was it just not having enough time that made you abort the run or did you come across some major difficulty ? My preliminary perception is that there are surprisingly few luck-based areas in the game, which is a relief.
Of course you should use the glitch, whatever's fastest. Good luck with those jumps onto the ladder in the first stage.

Ok, I'm finally starting to get decent looking no-death runs. Best so far is 23.43 (pal). I'm really not sure what to do with it. There are a couple of mistakes, so I feel that I have the capacity to squeeze out a couple of more seconds. On the other hand, I got far beyond lucky in some parts. It would be insanely frustrating if I managed to do a cleaner run that I'm happy with, but that is slower because of less luck... I guess that I will try to improve my time for a while. Hopefully it will result in something that is both faster and cleaner.

(I'm not a big fan of that jump onto the ladder in the first stage either)

Yesterday, I managed to improve the run by a couple of seconds. It might be possible to improve one last time, but otherwise I will ask for this run to go into verification. Right now I need a break from this game. I'll see again after the holidays if the motivation has returned or if I have to settle with what I got.

Nice job! Sorry I never actually answered the question you asked me like two months ago.

As you probably guessed, it wasn't any major difficulty that stopped me (Though, as you figured out, that jump in Stage 1 is a bitch...). Just didn't have the time or the dedication to make the run a reality.
Okay, I'm now running this in the time off I have between making an enterprise site, trying to start a relationship *gasp*, and school. So it's gonna be slow going, but this game is just good enough to keep me interested. I'm still just fleshing things out, trying to figure out how much energy I need for certain bosses, etc. I'll keep you guys posted.
Waiting hurts my soul...

While you're at it, why don't you sign up to verify the one up for verification since January?  Tongue

I am played that game too, but never beat it through so i can,t are verifer. Its look it is hard time find verifers with rare games like this. This was mostly reason why i stop run Joe & Mac Nes, because this looks nobody not was played that game and i not got any comments in forum.

This is quite avarage game i´ll hope see run into SDA too. I am sure this game will got verifers if nobody not. I´ll play it through.

K, signed up. Now to go punish myself with more practice.
I'm glad to hear that verifyers are on the way (even though it's supposed to be a secret I guess).

Lykaios, sounds good that you are determined about attempting a speedrun of Power Blade. I'll be following your progress with interest.
Power Blade
Sorry to bump,
I have been working on this game a bit. I stream practice attempts on twitch.tv/dal_tone I have a 18:22 run on there now (Expert, NTSC)
I still need to work some things out with this capture device (Dazzle DVC100 usb) I don't know if I should trust it to stream while recording attempts. I think I should go for 17:59, what do you guys think?

17:33, NTSC.
Missed some clips once or twice but overall pretty good.
Was the first run attempt I did and probably the only one for a while.

meh
Well, this puts my 19:22 to shame.  But this is really awesome. Guess I have some new tricks to learn ^^  (or strats rather)

Edit: I posted before I even saw the whole run. Just gotta say, that 2nd wallclip on Sector 6 was awesome. Didn't know about that one.
Also, love your strat against the first form of the final boss, way better than the "tank the damage and use health item"-strat I use ^^
I'm really loving this run. But I'm not looking forward to learning the first walljump in Sector 4, tried it a few times but was unsuccessful every time.
That was an awesome run. kwto's pal run was 23:36. Converting to ntsc, that's 19:40, so you're over two minutes faster. He did play on expert, although that shouldn't be more than a few seconds slower as he says in the original post.
