Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so sorry if it is.

Ok, what I am about to say will seem extremely farfetched and I don't expect any of you to believe me. Nonetheless, I would like to get this down because it is one of the strangest things I've ever seen happen.

My younger brother, 12 years of age was playing Mario Sunshine (PAL) on our PAL Wii. He is a special needs child, and can't really communicate... he also can't play the game very well and I rarely see him get a shine. That's not the point. I left him to his own devices on Account B of the game, with 9 Shines. Bianco Hills was unlocked, as was Gelato Beach. Ricco Harbor was NOT. Anyway, he goes into Gelato Beach, and I leave the room. I come back in half an hour, and he has 98 SHINES. All the stages are unlocked including Bowser. At first I thought it was just on of my saves that he loaded, but the only saves on the Memory card had for 2, 9 and 8 shines, as I use a different card for my playthroughs. What makes matters strange, and the only thing I can do to prove it isn't a hoax, is when he collects Blue Coins in this odd save, they do not register. The counter doesn't go up, even though the Blue Coin message appears. We saved and turned off the game, but the save was still there. 98 Shines.

Here's a video I recorded on the day. Basically it shows my brother collecting a Blue Coin with the counter remaining on 0.

I don't know if it's a corruption of the Memory Card or the actual Game that's doing this. I hope it's the latter. I don't expect you to believe me, I really don't. But If this glitch can be repeated then Mario Sunshine Speedruns could get much faster.

I think even if it's possible you absolutely need the 7th star of each level to be completed but that would be interesting to know how to do it just in case it would be possible.
But that's the thing. We could access Bowser. All the stages acted as if the shines were completed already. And while I haven't checked yet, I wonder if the Shines will still be Golden even though the stage claims otherwise. So basically, we went from having 9 shines to a glitchy 98, skipping the flooding of Delphino Plaza and everything.

Don't do anything in ricco harbor(at least not the 7th star of it)  then complete the rest of the game and then record a video if it's possible and then if it's the case, we'll do research for that glitch.

No, that's the thing. Going into any stage shows all the Shines completed. I can already access lvl 8 for ALL stages, in fact, in the video I linked I was in Yoshi's Fruit Adventure of Ricco Harbor, collecting a Blue Coin. I can't use our TV at the moment, but as soon as I can, I'll see if the shines the game claims I have already collected are still active. Another thing I forgot to mention (I don't know what difference if makes), before the save got the 98 shines, I had collected all shines in Bianco Hills bar the 8th one. I can't remember if the first shine (as you can skip the first shine of the stage) was collected too, but I'm fairly certain it was, as the save was originally from a race my friend and I were having.

I'll probably be doing some testing since I really find the blue coin video interesting but I really can't see how this would be possible.
Me neither. My brother is amazing. He's found amazing glitches like this before (and the fact he can't communicate very effectively means he can't just say what he did). For instance, in the GameCube Harry Potter 2, he got into a strange black void with beans everywhere. At least I have a save of this one, so I'll play around and take notes of what state the game is in. Also, NONE of the Blue coins in ANY stage were collected (and now can't be collected).

I'll probably be testing this at the marathon since I'm not currently home and I'll have my wii back on january first and I'll be testing this in a corner at the marathon with my capture card.

Ok, I messed around for a bit. Didn't find anything new (except that Blue Coins will respawn when you re-enter the stage), but here you go:

That sound pretty convincing, if there's a way to reproduce this, I'll probably find it(if it isn't a corrupt memory card thing). So in the order your game slot were A2 B9 C8 and then it's your B file that became 98??? so I'll do the same configuration in case it change anything.
Yep. From memory, the shines I got in B were:

The Shine Sprite sign under the sand near the lighthouse (was the last shine I got before corruption, I got it right after I unlocked Gelato Beach).

The Shine at the Airport.

The Shine in the Bell Tower (the Bell Tower near where Yoshi is).
OR
The first Shine in Bianco Hills (more likely)

6 Shines of Bianco Hills.

My Brother was last seen in the 8th Shine of Bianco Hills (which wasn't complete). During his play he got the Rocket and the Turbo Nozzle (both of which were already unlocked), ran around aimlessly (at which point I left) until (I assume from watching his playstyle) he died to being barraged by enemies. I don't know what happened after then, but when I returned, the fabled 98 was there.

It's impossible to get the two other nozzle before Yoshi and IIRC, it's impossible to get Yoshi before something like 20 shines.
Exactly. That's what makes this an interesting glitch. Because not only does it yield the shines, it unlocks these things too.

Aren't some nozzles temporarily available for some shines outside of the normal unlocking requirements?  Or am I remembering this game completely wrong?
They are, but he was referring to the ones in the Plaza.
Well, I was at a friends house today, and I tried copying the save to his card. It stayed consistent with his Wii and card too. We later tried to recreate the glitch, with no success (though we somehow got the music in the Plaza to stop completely by going in and out of a pipe).
I don't own this game, and have never played it, but this glitch intrigues me, and considering no-one else mentioned it yet, I'll just point out that at the start of that video, it says 999 shines at the bottom right, which is just weird Shocked
Maybe, is there some kind of 'unlock all' cheatcode for sms which your brother accidentally triggered?
i am the said friend, i think he may have had an AR memory card and may have accidentally left a cheat on?
