Waiting hurts my soul...
Here's a tip.  Run it on SNES since it's easier to record.

[/cleverly disguised "what's the progress?" post]
Most of these sub-games don't exist on Kirby Super Star for the SNES.

None of those times you posted are that great, to be honest. Me and another member were discussing Metaknigtmare Ultra months ago. I'm pretty confident 29:xx is a nice, achievable goal for that mode. We'd already gotten sub-31 by that point, but I haven't touched it since then so I'd probably need to brush up if I wanted to come close to that. I've seen a 4:07 on H2H with Hammer, and sub-5:30 (EDIT: 5:26 to be specific) on True Arena, but I haven't really played either mode enough to get times like that. Gourmet Race is faster on KSSU than it is on the original KSS, but honestly if you wanted to have runs of that, it'd probably be easier to do it on the SNES. The main issue is of course how the hell you're gonna record the DS game without any issues. You might wanna make sure you have that covered before attempting a speed run.

As for tips, I'd say right now just play those modes more and you'll naturally find some tricks and stuff that help you do it progressively faster. MKU you'll need to do SS for optimal time since you can carry over points from the previous area that way for an extra speed boost. Specific tips with MKU won't really help much until you already have a general plan and idea of point distribution that you can tweak. Start getting around 34:00 on that and then some in-depth discussion can start being useful.

As for the arena modes, I'm not as familiar with those and since I haven't touched the game in a while anyway, you might be better off having someone else give advice on those.

EDIT: you also might want to look for that Metaknightmare Ultra thread
Yes, the above topic should be able to answer some questions and provide some good ideas about the Meta Nightmare section of KSSU, another thing you will have to look into is (as was previously mentioned by Romscout) is that fact that recording from a DS is an absolute pain.  That is the main reason I put Meta Nightmare on hold for a while.  I could not find a good comfortable position to play in, and get good video playback.  Best of luck to you, maybe I'll start playing again and post some info for you.

Here's a link to that topic in case you haven't come across it yet.

Yea, same reason it was on hold over here too Tongue

One of these days we'll figure out a way to record it good and put this game to shame... right? Sad
Execute run. Scream at console. Repeat as needed.
As far as suggestions go, definitely use Hammer in both Arenas, making particular use of the up+attack, which takes a second or so to charge up and does massive damage. I don't own this game, but having borrowed it for a few days I got 4:02 or so with Bonkers on Helper to Hero, so definitely run him there as well.

K, let's go.

I've finally recorded a sub-30 run. Though it was only 4.xx seconds higher than my current record, it had a few mistakes, especially a big one, where I died on the sub-bosses before the Cannon #2 boss. Also, I died once on lv 5 too, and played this whole level pretty bad in general. So a sub-29 is probably achievable even with a few mistakes. 28:14.74 seems to be the sum of rom's lv 1 + my records on the other lvs (currently the best ones in the Casual topic). Maybe the 27 minutes rom commented on the other topic is possible, but a bit hard.

Since the AGDQ was just a few days, I don't plan to try submitting it now, at least not before the videos come out. But after that's cleared:
-should I submit it? Edit: After seeing the last part again, I probably won't submit it. Even if the time seems good, there are too many mistakes IMO.
-do we need to complete the other modes? Since this game is basically many games in one, I guess it's fine submitting only 1 of them?

Also, just to show how I recorded:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/Anwonu/DSC00950.jpg
Yup, a DS taped on a Wii, and a camera and a tripod between me and the DS. Seems strange, and I can't play the usual way (on the right hand, I'm using the index and middle finger instead of the thumb), but at least the video doesn't get too shaky =p

MKU can be submitted as either a SS run or ILs. If you died, I wouldn't submit because it would undoubtedly be rejected. Go for the deathless sub-30 run and it'll probably be your fastest anyway (hopefully breaking 29 minutes anwyay). I always had the motivation to do this run yet never had the motivation to get the recording set up, so I'm glad someone will finally have a good MKU run on the site lol. Good luck on your future attempts, dude. Can't wait to verify the run.

I forgot to ask: which is better, recording only the top screen, or both? What about the other games?
Currently, I'm recording both of them, since it shows the # of points I have. But the other games have almost no information besides the timer and health.

Edit: Got a good lv 1, 2 and 3, but horrible 4.
So, meanwhile, here's Lv 1: (Edit: I've got a better time, but it's basically the same as this video, with a better start.)

And the second, if anyone's interested:

I've just recorded my best run, probably.. if it weren't for the last boss, again. A dash attack didn't come when I needed it.
Record on lv 1 and 3, <6s than my record on 2 and <4s on 4. Died when Galacta had about 1/3 health left.
So, the total was almost the same as the one above: 29:23:xx. It's a lot cleaner, but the death makes it pretty bad. I guess I could've cut about 40s from it, making 28:4x:xx..

On other news, Lv 1 is getting closer to sub 2 minutes. Of course, the closer it gets, the harder it is to improve, but who knows? =p

rom, what are your current records? I'm talking about sub 2 on lv 1, but I heard you've broken it?
(I have yet to break it; best is currently 2:01:xx)
Edit: I've already talked with him on irc =p

Also, run completed with 28:14:xx. Though 1st level was 2:08:xx (many mistakes at the start), I think the other stages were better, at least.

Game on the verification list /o/
It's not the run mentioned on the previous post; I tried improving it (and now recording only the top screen, as suggested by romscout), and yeah, it was improved significantly.

Some news. I tried a SS again today, but as usual, I died. On lv 4.
Whatever, that's not the news. I just wanted to say that I finally broke the 2 minutes on stage 1. Very barely, and I didn't even get a trick right.
Also, a new record on lv 3, but I could be faster at the end, where I could've used one more meta quick. So, for now, I think only lv 1 and 2 are good for an IL (the 2nd lv doesn't require too many points; I usually max it right before Bonkers).

True Arena: 3:51:82. Yay.
There was a bad hit on Kracko, but Lololo & Lalala was pretty lucky.
I wanted to get at least sub 3:52, so for now I'll keep this. I might try again later.

Also, I'm recording a few HtH. So far, a 3:53:xx Bonkers and 7:23:xx Parasol. And 3 more, though they're pretty far from the Cyberscore records, and even my own ones.

Sub-4 minutes on the True Arena and on Helper to Hero as Bonkers? That is amazing. We must see video evidence ASAP.

I tried some True Arena again today, after seeing a 4:50 on YouTube. But this run is so luck-based, it's making me sad.
(Basically, in my run, only Mid-Bosses, Kabula, Dedede and Wham Bam Jewel aren't affected by luck; Galacta, I just don't have any pattern; and Marx, I just hope I can hit him with Hammer Flip. But now I'd have to have some luck on Dedede as well, so that I can defeat him without him making that spin attack.)

Also, 3:50:70 with Bonkers, but the last boss was pretty bad =p
TASer
True Arena TAS in 2:33.62. Maybe it can be of any help or be interesting to watch. Smiley

I'm not even sure if 0xwas could pull that off on console. Even sub-3:10 seems like it'd be nothing short of miraculous, but then again I must remember that SMRPG may have proven that RNG is not an insurmountable obstacle.

Congrats on the times, Anwonu. Can't wait to see the vids. I've offered to do Metaknight mode for the winter marathon, so I'm going to be getting back into that soon and trying to compete with your record. We'll see how that goes. >_>

Well, obviously I can't use all the tricks in that TAS, but I may try a thing or two from that, thanks =p

Also, for now:
Bonkers
Gim

Bump edit: Bonkers, yay.
a.k.a. Taillow
Wow, that Gim twin woods trick.  I didn't know that move had the range to do that.  Running into stuff left and right there, though.  But still pretty good.

Bonkers looked near perfect there.

And plenty of great luck for both.  Makes me wish I could record this stuff but I don't really have anything to do that with.

Hoping to see a Sword Knight or Blade Knight run, I've been wondering how to do those better for ages.

Actually, so have I. I don't even know how I got sub 7 on them.

Bumping to share something: there's an easier way to record this game, but you'd need to have 2 DS and 2 games (I used a flashcard to test this BTW).
-Set up one of the DS to record
-Get the other DS and open a wireless room
-Enter with the 1st DS as helper

Now, everything you see in a DS will be seen in the other.

This can be used in Meta Knightmare Ultra and apparently all the Kirby modes (didn't test them). Unfortunately, you're forced to play Helper to Hero with 2 players, so that's out.

The only differences that I saw are:
-A "1P is choosing" or something like that appears
-Those "connection bars" thing appear in a corner
-In Meta Knightmare Ultra, the symbols doesn't appear on the Touch Screen, but you can still see the points.

I believe that's allowed, right?

I'd say this sounds like a great idea, at least for 2-player categories. This also sounds like a neat opportunity to easily record a 2-player 100% run of the entire game (perhaps for AGDQ 2013?).
