Icewind Dale

I've been playing around with Icewind Dale lately and I was thinking about doing a speed run of it.

I could probably complete the game in about 1 hour...multi segment of course since this game is much harder than Baldur's Gate Wink

Would anyone be interested in a run of this game?

I've already recorded the run.. it's approx. 63 minutes (with loading screens), done in 14 segments.
I'm really happy with the run and if I don't find any other new shortcuts I'll leave it as is.

Unfortunately I had to record it with the german version of IWD... the english version is hard to get here...:-/

I'll be also interested in seeing this speedrun. Can you upload it somewhere? The BG1 speedruns are very good :). Anyone made a BG2 speedrun?

There's a topic on a BG2 run somewhere on these forums too. Nothing seems to have come of it. I looked into doing one myself, but that would have to be including ToB for me, and that's just too long, totalling close to the 5 hour mark.

You probably know there are a few good items to pickpocket in Kuldahar from Oswald, Arundel and Orrick the Grey. They are all valuable stuff to be used or sold. One of them can be vey useful for a speedrunner: the Necklace of Missiles from Oswald. It has only one charge. So you have to recharge it in a shop, but that is not a problem as you can sell the Rings of Free Action and the Necklace of Metaspell Influence and recharge it almost 3 times. The real problem is succeding the pickpocketing. The only safe option I can think of is investing a little in Pickpocket at character creation and drinking Potions of Mind Focusing available at Oswalds to boost DEX to 25.

I actually pickpocket all the 3 persons.
On my first Kuldahar visit I pickpocket Orrick (which is quite tough since I didn't invest any points in pickpocketing at this time and I'm still Level 1)
After the Vale of Shadows I boost my pickpocketing to 75 if I remember correctly and pickpocket Oswald and Arundel.
Of course I also recharge the Necklace of Missiles.

By the way: I play a F/M/T in IWD since Oil of Speeds are hard to come by and I learn the Haste spell in Dragon's Eye.

Great! It will be a pleasure to see that speedrun. I remember well my playing with a full team (on hardest mode but still not an excuse Smiley

) and I'm interested in seeing the possible shortcuts. The quality of the videos is very good too. I installed fraps and camtasia but seem to have my graphic card out of date. Capturing a game makes the game much slower....:(.

Hope someone will manage to speedrun BG2, it's like watching a movie of your favorite game Smiley

yep, I recorded the IWD run with Fraps and in some parts the game gets really slow...
But the worst thing about recording with Fraps is the mouse movement. The mouse "feels" really bad and the movement is imprecise. That's why I miss some buttons sometimes.
But it's still 1000 times better than recording with Camtasia.. Camtasia is only good to record games which do not support 3D Acceleration like BG1.

any news from your Icewin dale speedrun? Has it been accepted by the host here? Maybe you can upload it somewhere else in the meantime?

With all those BG and BG2 runs it will be nice to see also Icewind dale Smiley

I've watched this run and I was very impressed.. I certainly had never guessed that this game could be done with 1 character similar to DAMURDOC's BG2 run since you start off at a lower level so your stealth ability isn't very effective. It must have been very tedious waiting for your character to hide early on. Lets hope this run is verified soon.

Sounds awesome. I just completed IWD a while ago and found it to be shorter than BG, at least that's what I found.

Might be easier cus you can have an entire party of thieves and hence makes it a little easier to kill bosses.

Will you be doing both expansions?

The game is actually longer and more difficult than BG...at least in terms of speedrunning.
That's because it's very linear and you can't skip as many parts as you can skip in BG.

I didn't do the run with a whole party, just with one Figher/Mage/Thief.
More party members means slower gameplay. There are not enough oils of speed/haste scrolls/boots of speed for more than one party member Wink

Ah and yes, I thought about doing a HoW run, but that has to wait a bit.
I want to do two more BG runs first (another multi-segment and another single segment)
