i'm basically just looking for a good quality dvd recorder. would be nice if i could hook it up to my monitor with an hdmi cable and use it as a tv, so i'd need to make sure there's no lag. any suggestions?

The generally accepted on is Philips DVDR3576H, which numerous people here have.  I know it has HDMI out.  I've never really used its video out to view the game, as I always use splitters to avoid lag, but the Wiki says zero lag.  As for video quality, it's damn beautiful, as long as you use a good input (like S-Video).

ah ok, didn't know there was a "standard" here. and i figured that page was outdated. thanks.
it's a bit beyond my price range though ... is there anything cheaper you could suggest?

If you're willing to take a refurbished one, I saw 2 auctions on eBay that's for under $100.  Note that the one of them specifically states no remote, which is almost a necessity.  There is another auction though for just a remote.

(No remote)

(Remote, states 3575, but the remote appears to be pretty much the same, so it should work)

I remember there being at least THREE of these suckers at the winter marathon.  I've had mine for a year and a half and outside of a minor goof where a block is listed as recording and can't be deleted (without wiping the HDD), I've had no issues with it.  It's well worth the money.  Try the auctions, otherwise look at some others in Phillips line...they make good stuff.
ok, awesome. thanks.

The newer model of the DVDR3576H is the Magnavox MDR515H/F7:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Magnavox-MDR515H-F7-500GB-HDD-and-DVD-R-with-Digital-Tuner/15080509.  I timed the lag on the MDR515H and it's 2 frames with analogue output (I haven't tested the lag with digital output, i.e., using HDMI output).  I imagine that the lag on the DVDR3576H is identical, since the MDR515H is just a newer model of the prior.

Is there some way for me to update the KB to reflect that the MDR515H is actually for sale and available, is a newer model of the DVDR3576H, and has actually been properly timed?

I have an account on the Wiki, so I can work on that later.

Thanks, Sir VG Smiley Here are the two relevant posts from the discussion on the topic:

would the MDR513H work too, or is nothing known about that one?

The MDR513H is the previous model, before the MDR515H (but newer than the DVDR3576H).  Last I checked, the 513 and 515 were about the same price, so there was no reason to get the (smaller HDD'd) 513.  But, if that's changed... *shrug*

Again, I stress that I've never laid my hands on the 513H or 3576H.  But, they're just different revisions of the same model.

poxnor, even though the kb registration needs admin approval now, i try to check for account requests several times a day.

...wow, Poxnor = fail *sigh*

I never saw the option to log in / request an account in the KB until just now, when I went looking to see what you were talking about.  I always assumed that it was only the SDA admins that had access to the KB.
I just got the Magnavox actually... the only difference that the 515 has is the hard drive (320GB to 500GB).  On Amazon its a $50 difference.  but as far as I can tell there is no lag on it.  I dont know exactly how to test it though.
